Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Looked into Campbell a little more and he actually beat the kid Burcher lost to in his second match 4-0 and looks like he could have easily won 3-4 matches, and ended up ranked #14 at 165. Looks like he could be a nice addition and helps gap a perceived weakness. I still really want to see the following lineup if weight/health permits (this is my way early outlook):

125: Rodriguez - Really think injuries held him back and if healthy, he would have made a run at AA status. Look for him to make that run next year at full health.
133: Tomasello - Should have won it all this year but he should next year, although Gross could give him some issues. Still, think we have a champion here.
141: Pletcher - I know he was wrestling up this year as a true freshman, but he really performed pretty well. If he plans on being at 141, he can develop the upper body and be better suited for 141. However, if Hayes cannot comfortably wrestle at 149, Hayes stays down here and Luke redshirts...as far as his personal development, a redshirt might be best.
149: Hayes - We have all been dying to see him wrestle and hopefully all these injuries do not prove to be too much to overcome. If he could bump up and be at full health, he could be a big plus for us here.
157: M. Jordan - Micah could easily make the leap to 157 and was a big 149 last year. In terms of competing for a title, he isn't beating either of Retherford or Nolf, so just getting to finals is the key for him next season. However, that might be a little bit easier at 149 if Kemerrer stays at 157. If he stays at 149 and Hayes at 141, you just have to hope that Ryan is healthy...he has wrestled at a high level when he is and could win some matches at the tourney.
165: Campbell - As mentioned above, should be a boost for us even if it is not astronomical. However, I guess I have not yet considered if he will be eligible to wrestle for us next year with the transfer? If not, Burcher is better than nothing and is capable of winning a match or two in the tourney. Obviously the ideal situation is that White can come in...he just smashed his way to a DII title for Notre Dame. No idea if he will be eligible or sticks with us though. If he can go for us, then I see a likely AA at this weight.
174: B. Jordan - Really hoping to see Bo get a title here for us. It will not be easy with Hall and Zalencia at the weight, but he certainly can do it.
184: Martin - I think he will be much better adjusted here and will make it to finals with all of Dean, Brooks, Dudley, Boyd, Dechow and Jackson graduating. Nickal still looms large but just making it to finals is huge if he can do it and he always has a shot against Nickal as he has proven in big matches in the past.
197: Moore - This is another weight where graduations will serve us well and in this case, I think in the form of a championship for Kollin, who only keeps improving. With Cox, Pfarr and Studebaker all graduating, the path is clear if he wrestles well. There are still some good wrestlers here in Haught, McCutcheon, Weigl, etc. but you have to like Kollin's chances.
285: Snyder - Should bonus his way to another title if healthy, nuff said.

- If you look at that, you could realistically have 6 guys in the finals and that the majority of your points come by winning in the quarters/semis. I know PSU is going to be brutal next year, but look at 174-285...you could realistically have a 4-win domino effect there in the finals much like PSU pulled off.

Not positive but I think that the transfer rule only applies to football and basketball. I am sure that someone will correct me if this is wrong.

Also baseball and men's hockey:

http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

One-time transfer exception: If you transfer from a four-year school, you may be immediately eligible to compete at your new school if you meet ALL the following conditions:

  • You are transferring to a Division II or III school, or you are transferring to a Division I school in any sport other than baseball, men's or women's basketball, football (Football Bowl Subdivision) or men’s ice hockey. If you are transferring to a Division I school for any of the previously-listed sports, you may be eligible to compete immediately if you were not recruited by your original school and you have never received an athletics scholarship.
  • You are academically and athletically eligible at your previous four-year school.
  • You receive a transfer-release agreement from your previous four-year school.

Thanks for the help guys, I was pretty sure I had seen D1 transfers begin wrestling immediately but could not remember a specific example. You have to also keep in mind that aside from a couple matches in a brutal bracket at NCAA's, Campbell is only going to improve from wrestling guys like the Jordans, Martin, Moore, and Romero...the more I think about it, the more I think this transfer could be big for us next year.

I know this is an OSU wrestling forum but the Boise State AD announced yesterday they will be dropping their wrestling team effective immediately. Really huge letdown for the wrestling community around here and a hit to NCAA wrestling in general...BSU struggled lately but have had some very good wrestling teams in the past. We are trying to get something together akin to what Cleveland State and ASU did in the past years, but I am hoping it is not too late. Would be really be really sad to see a program as good as BSU get dropped.

Wow! That's unreal. It's a real shame how many programs are gone and leaving in the PNW.

I know it. Without BSU, there would be only 3 wrestling schools in the PNW for Division 1 with Oregon State, Wyoming and Utah Valley. Wrestling is actually quite popular in the region and especially in the Boise area, so this is devastating to the local kids and in the PNW generally...10 less scholarships. In any event, I attended an emergency meeting with the boosters/alumni/etc. and we are going to be hitting it hard trying to get it overturned. I am hoping we can get enough funding, influence and outrage to get the president to back off the decision, or at the very least let the wrestlers who are there finish their careers there. They are getting rid of wrestling to add baseball and the stadium wouldn't even be ready until 2020 it looks like (and that is still not even a sure thing it gets built), so the decision to terminate wrestling immediately is mind boggling and really unfair to the kids and coaches. I know I am not an alumni and typically despise BSU, but the wrestling fraternal bond supersedes that quite a bit...this would hurt the sport in general and I am going to do what I can so it doesn't happen.

The Boise news while disappointing is not completely unexpected when you consider the general state of wrestling at the high school level nationally and in the 70 some D1 programs left. High school wrestling peaked somewhere in the late 80's and has been on a slow but steady decline in both participation and support. Because we are all very invested in wrestling it's very hard to see that trend let along be objective about it but every study done in the last 25 years shows confirms this trend. When you subtract the wrestling crazed states like PA, OH, NJ, IA, IL, IN, MN, OK and a few others the picture doesn't look good. Then you throw in the completely noncompetitive nature of D1 wrestling where only 4 or so programs actually have the chance to be elite every year and one program is signing 5 of the top 10 elite kids in a given class... it's easy to see why some AD's don't see the point of maintaining a program or those 10 scholarships. The best thing that could happen to save wrestling is more parity across 15-20 D1 programs. Where kids from Cleveland State and Boise have a shot to be on the podium every year and the sport is able to expand to a top tier conference like the SEC or increase it's footprint among the Big 12 and Pac 10 schools.

Oh I certainly concur with everything you said above, wrestling is not a fan favorite and it is a smaller, yet vocal and passionate following. The biggest issue I have is how they orchestrated the whole thing and lied to the coaches and the kids, along with the fact that the university said it was due to funding...baseball loses WAY WAY WAY more money than wrestling does. The administration should have just said "we don't like wrestling, we like baseball."

And I don't want to come off the wrong way, but Cleveland State has not been very successful historically. BSU has had numerous national champions, All-Americans and were #2 in the nation at one point I believe about 5 years ago (and were top 10-25 for a pretty considerable stretch). While they weren't necessarily a powerhouse, it was fairly successful program that got the ax with zero heads up. The trends you listed above are what concerns me...unfortunately, I think you will see more of this in the near future.

I have no clue how big a get this is, but JUCO transfer to OSU - Dayton Racer

Based on name alone, he's bound to be a legend. Dayton Racer....what a name.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...estling-buckeyes-land-juco-champ-dayton-racer

This is ENORMOUS for us...fills a huge void at 157 for us. Racer was a top recruit and originally went to Virginia Tech, then went back to Iowa Central and won a national title for them and nearly teched/pinned his way through. Getting Racer and Campbell to transfer here puts us in a great position to potentially win it all next year...both guys should contend for AA status right away, whereas we basically expected no wins at NCAA's out of either Ryan or Burcher. I thought there was basically no real answer at this weight, great get and find by the coaching staff. With this commitment, we should have a firm idea of the lineup next year and it looks awesome, basically no real weak spots if healthy:

125: Rodriguez
133: Tomasello
141: Hayes (or Pletcher if healthy)
149: M. Jordan
157: Racer
165: Campbell
174: B. Jordan
184: Martin
197: Moore
285: Snyder

And I have been slacking on my OSU recruiting lately...we got a commitment last month from Ethan Smith of Maryland right after Heinselman commtited. He is a two time state champ and ranked #8 nationally at 182, should project 184/197. He's had some big wins under his belt, that was a nice get. We also got Brakan Mead, who won state at 113 in Ohio this year.

Brakan Mead, will he be able to do anything at 125 next year if Rodriguez isn't a full-go? I see Mead is a HS senior.

Do you see anything happening between OSU and Vough with Boise shutting things down? We have Singletary coming in as a light 285 to learn under Snyder, but Vough, if healthy, presents a traditional heavy, heavyweight.

I was curious on Mead...he is still awfully light and I don't see him making the jump to 125 without taking some lumps. And no disrespect to Mead, as he is talented in his own right at the high school level (I believe he was a 3 time state finalist, 1 time state champion and never placed lower than 3rd at state), but I don't see him making much noise here other than a spot wrestler if our starting 125 goes down (I am guessing he likely got a very small, partial scholarship).

And I am curious on Vough as well...I know BSU was ecstatic to get his commitment and really, he might be the best heavy in the country outside of Steveson. Vough might be a more college-ready guy...you are right, he is a big, traditional heavy and I think he might be more able to step in right away. But at the end of the day, I just don't think you have room for two heavies in the same class, even as good as Vough is and assuming you have the scholarship allocations (which got tighter with Racer joining). I was hopeful for some time Vough would be a Buckeye and would LOVE to get him here if it is possible, but with the Singletary commitment I think that ship sailed.
