Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...y-jordan-commits-to-wrestle-at-ohio-state?amp

This article has a commitment chart in it. I wonder how David Carr fits in. Maybe 157?

Killed me to not spoil this one early, though it was kind of a foregone conclusion after Bo and Mic. I cannot put into words how proud I am on this one, Rock is such a great kid and you all will just love to see him wrestle, he is such an aggressor...from seeing him grow up on the mats in St. Paris as a toddler who could barely even walk, to seeing him turn into a dominant wrestler on his way to wrestle for Ohio State? Just makes me well up with pride. And feel suddenly old, but moreso the pride thing.

As for future projections, Rocky is growing like a tree and I see him ending up more in the 165/174/184 area in college at the end of the day. I think Carr can commit and not have to worry about it honestly. I think there is a good chance that you could see Carr/Jordan/Mattox all wrestle consecutively here, just not sure what order yet.

OHIO STATE DEBUTS AT #2 ON FLOWRESTLING PRESEASON RANKINGS, FIVE BIG TEN TEAMS MAKE TOP TEN

85622_h.jpg

Ohio State is well-positioned to make a run at another NCAA wrestling championship in 2018. FloWrestling ranked the Buckeyes right behind the defending champion Penn State Nittany Lions in the preseason rankings, with three other Big Ten teams cracking the Top Ten.

"There are two superteams this year in the NCAA, and one of them is Ohio State," Flo said in the site's analysis of the team's potential starters. "The Buckeyes represent the greatest threat to dethrone Penn State after reloading in the offseason."

Ohio State returns 113.5 team points from its 2017 NCAA runner-up squad - a total greater than Buckeye head coach Tom Ryan's 2015 title team scored, "more than Penn State's 2011 and 2014 title teams, more than Iowa's 2009 title team, and more than Minnesota's 2007 title team."

In other words, this team is going to be good.

Digging further into Ohio State's chances to challenge Cael Sanderson's dynasty in Happy Valley, the Buckeyes have a real shot to achieve the rare feat of fielding 10 All-American finishers next March in Cleveland. The roster includes 10 athletes ranked in Flo's preseason rankings - the entire projected starting lineup, in other words - more than any other team in the country.

Ryan Karoly, the #1/2 182 lb. wrestler in the country and one of the top class of 2018 wrestlers, just decommitted from Northwestern and there is interest with OSU. However, we just got Romero at 174, Ethan Smith at 182 and Singletary at HWT in the 2017 class, and Gavin Hoffman at 195 in the 2018 class, so not sure there is room for him in the upper weights.

Karoly is an absolute star though, could be a guy we just try to figure things out on, as he might be just a notch above Smith and Hoffman (though I think it is basically a wash). Maybe keep an eye out but I think the emphasis will be placed on the middle weights for the 2018 class.

Wrestling: Joey McKenna, Te’Shan Campbell hope success transfers to Ohio State

2017NCAA-S1-JH-0271-199s8dv-530x353.jpg

Te’Shan Campbell hopes to find success after transferring to Ohio State after the wrestling team finished second at the NCAA Championships last season.

A season ago, Joey McKenna and Te’Shan Campbell won the Pac-12 championship and ACC championship, respectively. Now, the two are looking for success with a different program, Ohio State, that has championship aspirations of its own.

The junior McKenna, who will compete at either 141 or 149 pounds, was an All-American last season at Stanford while placing third in the nation at 141 pounds. Campbell competes at 165 pounds and was a two-time NCAA tournament qualifier at Pittsburgh.

Ohio State coach Tom Ryan acknowledged how advantageous it was to add the two transfers to an already talented group.

“It’s quite a luxury,” Ryan said. “We’re really fortunate that both of those guys decided to be Buckeyes.”

McKenna owns an overall record of 58-6 (21-1 dual record), which includes 15 falls and four technical falls. He compiled 15 victories against nationally ranked opponents while at Stanford. As a high-schooler, he won three national championships in New Jersey.

Campbell has made his mark in the city of Pittsburgh and the state of Pennsylvania, growing up in the Steel City and competing there since adolescence. The junior registered an overall record of 40-16 as a Panther, including a 22-4 mark in 2016-17. He tallied 10 technical falls, seven major decisions and three falls during his two college seasons. In high school, he won the 2015 PIAA state championship at 170 pounds and ended his senior season undefeated.

Since the two transfers have arrived in Columbus, Ryan has seen all the positive qualities he hopes to see in all his transfers.

“Love, passion, purpose,” Ryan said. “All of the things that you would expect to see from an individual that left places where they were perhaps comfortable, had rooted friendships. It’s not an easy thing to do, to have the courage to leave a school where they were happy.”

Since you knew the last two... can you tell us when David Carr committed? Haha!

Haha wish I knew and I would tell you that one. I think there is a little work to do there, particularly when we just took Mattox and Rocky right around the same weight. I think Carr knows he is likely the best of the bunch and will have a spot here, but I think he is mulling it over.

Also on the 141/149/157 weights: Hayes and McKenna are going to wrestle off for 141, loser will bump up to 149 and Mic will wrestle 157. 141 is easier to win but deeper, 149 you aren't going to win but better shot at AA.

Nathan Tomasello chases international success while balancing NCAA senior season

TomaselloGilman400x250.jpg

To say Nathan Tomasello is a wrestler on the rise might seem strange. However, the Ohio State senior’s successful summer on the international scene has given rise to a promising future in freestyle wrestling.

After a third-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis, Mo., followed by a bronze medal win at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev., Tomasello set his sights on the U.S. World Team Trials, where a lethal field of contenders was in the running at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.

Upon arrival in Lincoln, Neb., Tomasello notched solid wins over top contenders Frank Perrelli and Alan Waters as the No. 3 seed to earn a spot in the challenge tournament finals against his longtime rival Thomas Gilman.

In a bout that came down to the final moments, Tomasello fell, 4-2, to Gilman in heart-wrenching fashion on a last second single conversion. Gilman went on to win the World Team spot and earned a silver medal at the World Championships in Paris, France.

Tomasello fought back to earn a spot on the 2017 U.S. National Team with a top-three finish at the Trials, an accomplishment that both disappointed him and drove him to become better.

“It was bittersweet,” Tomasello said. “I was happy to have made the National Team, and it’s a great honor to be top three in the U.S., but I was hoping to win it. I had a great shot. I had a close one with Gilman in the tournament challenge finals and I felt like I let it slip away. That was really tough. I became really hungry to keep improving and get more experience.”

Despite not making the World Team, Tomasello’s hunger for freestyle success never wavered, prompting him to wrestle in a pair of international tournaments throughout the summer. It was the first time in his career that he put a primary focus on freestyle.

“The NCAA tournament is really important for me this year, and I want to win that, but I also want to keep improving in my freestyle wrestling,” he said. “Ultimately, I want to pursue Olympic and World medals. I wanted to get out and wrestle foreign competition this year, and that was the reason I competed a good amount this summer. I always love to compete, so I’m glad that I got asked to go on a few of these trips. I’m thankful that my coaches were on board and supportive of it.”

Wrestling: Kollin wants Moore after losing in NCAA semifinals

IMG_0956-530x353.jpg

In just his first year of competition, Ohio State’s Kollin Moore upset Minnesota’s Brett Pfarr 15-11 to capture the Big Ten wrestling title in March. Two weeks later, Pfarr returned with a vengeance and eliminated Moore from a chance at a national championship in the NCAA semifinals.

Moore’s title hopes might have been dashed by his loss to Pfarr, but it showed the world that Moore could be a title contender in the 197-pound weight class with steady improvements

The loss was one of only four for Moore during his freshman campaign.

Going into his second season, Moore, along with his coaches and fans, is hopeful he will elevate his game to the level of a national champion.

That goal might be closer than anyone has realized. Going into this season, there are no losses on Moore’s record to any wrestler still in the NCAA. Both Pfarr — who handed Moore three losses last season — and the reigning 197-pound champion, Missouri’s J’Den Cox, have graduated.

With those two gone, the 197-pound division could be Moore’s for the taking.

But even a preseason No. 1 overall ranking from FloWrestling, a spot on the U.S. Second World Junior Team, a Big Ten title and conference freshman of the year honors haven’t changed his vision for his growth as a wrestler.

The Burbank, Ohio, native was among the NCAA’s best on the offensive last season. Moore captivated many wrestling fans with his 33 wins last season. This included six pins, with perhaps the most impressive coming against Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught in last season’s NCAA consolation finals.

But it’s not just the pins that showed off his offensive skill. Moore averaged 18 points per match in bouts that didn’t end in a pin.

“Finishing, I think, is always going to be a big problem for me,” Moore said. “I shoot a lot, so I need to make sure the effort I spend on shooting pays off into takedowns.”

Even if Moore doesn’t show it off the mat, head coach Tom Ryan knew when he first saw Moore, he could be one of the nation’s best.

“He wasn’t the biggest recruit in the country,” Ryan said. “I thought he was, but he was a one-time state champion.”

There's a singlet under there... somewhere. @WrestlingBucks show off this season's line of gear

Having that amount of layers on before the singlets break out only brings back nightmares of cutting weight in a sauna

EDIT: Forgot what I even came in to post about. Karoly to OSU will not happen from what I am hearing, so nothing to really watch there.
