The truly pathetic thing are the people who respond like you tibs, despite most of us posting here that Alcoholism does not remove the responsibility of the person. I'll repeat myself since you're blatantly unable to read or carry on an intelligent conversation:

If there is a history of chemical imbalances taht lead to rage and violence in my family, and I go out and beat up people... trying to heal me will require acknowledging the violent streak in me (which should be tied to my family as well). Doing so does not take away the responsibility of what I have done, but rather is crucial to rehabilitating me.

The sames holds true for alcoholism.

So keep trolling about a disorder which has ruined millions of families. Regardless of whether you call it an addiction, disorder or whatever, it is a real problem and it does run in families. Once you get past your "boo hoo - it runs in my family so its not my problem" crap you really don't have much to offer this discussion.

Well said, and I did not mean to berate you.

The answer is I have no idea really. Most issues of this sort are shown to run in families so it seems to lend credence that they are inherited traits. I can only go by my experiences. I am glad for your uncle, but I can assure you that he is the exception rather than the rule. Most cannot do it on their own for an extended period of time, that is where the fellowship of many 12 step programs comes in to play. That could be AA, NA, OEA, GA or a plethera of self help groups.

No worries, just a difference in opinion.
I know, and I took no umbrage to anything you said to me. It's a shame really, I expect it from now and again--I expect to give as well as receive. I'm not going to deny some people's propensity to tolerate/not tolerate alcohol as much as others, but it happens with many many more things.

Tibor may be an abrasive prick (which I thuroughly enjoy, Tibs. I can't save your rep single-handedly :)), but at least he conveys himself as intelligent. Stupid people genereally have a blunt, unfocused, and short-tempered anger that lacks direction. At least with Tibs, it's pointed, sharp, witty, and (disclaimer: I believe) grains of truth are found in his thoughts. Keep up the good work, Doctorb.

Drunks deserve rehab.

Do they deserve free rides to college? Nope.

Agreed. I said that earlier.

Just trying to validate alcoholism. I never wanted to validate his eligibility (I started the thread with the thumbs down).

Maybe I should stop directing my grumpiness towards you and go to bed for the first time in 36 hours :)

Sounds compulsive/obsessive to me.:wink2:

Soul, I agree. I really do not know the facts of the case to see if this kids deserves an extra year. As is the case with any of these kids that get in trouble, I usually root for them to make a turnaround and become productive citizens. Yes Tibor, that includes Dukes, Izzary, Guilford and even that weird chicken choker form TSUN.
I look at the O-lineman from Oakland that might still be in a coma from a gunshot and it is just sad. The fact that he is a drunk and nuts is not his fault. Brutal.

"There was a comedian/entertainer who spoke at our school who was unable to eat wheat-it made him horribly ill, and severely impaired his functioning in society. His cure-he is basically on the Atkins diet for life. In either case, the cure is within the 100% control of the individual. Cancer,AIDS,MS patients,etc.-don't have that luxury."

STX, the difference is that that guy did not have an insasiable craving to eat wheat. That is the bizzarre thing about C/O disorders. Generally your crave what is the manifistation of the disease. It is counter to everything a normal person would think.
