Oklahoma Sooners (official thread)

Lincoln Riley will (barely) make more than his starting QB in 2018

One running joke that’s made numerous laps around the college football world this month has officially run its course.

After being taken ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics in the June Major League Baseball draft, Kyler Murray reached an agreement on a contract with the stick-and-ball club that will not only allow him to play football for Oklahoma in 2018, but will pay him $4.7 million for good measure. As Lincoln Riley was paid $3.1 million in 2017, there was a very real possibility that the Sooners’ starting quarterback would earn more in 2018 than OU’s head football coach.

Tuesday, however, that particular plotline was put to bed as the university’s Board of Regents confirmed a long-expected revised contract for Riley. The coach’s 2018 salary? $4.8 million (plus bonuses).

Take that, Kyler Murray.

Seriously, how in TF can he get paid as a student athlete, considering that some CU kid couldn’t get money to ski? Did I miss something?
Don't know if it's still the case, but the difference in the Jeremy Bloom case was that he was receiving commercial endorsements as a skier, while the NCAA only allowed players to receive a pro salary for playing another sport.

Yup. Makes all the sense in the world.

Note: the sarcasm is not directed at you.

Hey hey hey hey hey.

Hey.

All of the money that Murray is earning is coming directly from baseball. There was no way to tell if the endorsement money that Bloom was getting could have been impacted and influenced by his illustrious football career at the University of Colorado...

Sorry. I tried to say that without laughing.

The amazing thing is the As are going to sign him to a contract and pay him millions while letting him risk injury in a non related college sport.

A non related college contact sport at that. This guy went in the first round, as well. He’s not their 29th round pick. I wouldn’t let him play in a related college sport once I’ve committed money to him. “Your ass is mine.”

Players sit out bowl games (everyone’s favorite topic ) to avoid injury and missing out on millions. Murray has his millions already and the A’s are going to let him play a full season?!
