Eagles Notes | Richmond, Clarke have back surgery

Eagles Notes
The Eagles announced yesterday that linebacker Greg Richmond and guard Adrien Clarke each underwent lower-back surgery on Wednesday. A team official said that no timetable has been given for their return.
Both surgeries were performed at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Richmond, who had been expected to challenge Dhani Jones for the starting strong-side linebacker position, missed last season after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back last Aug. 15.
Clarke started four games last season when injuries decimated the offensive line, but he was projected to serve in a backup role this season.

Eagles Notes | Bloom, Davis land on injured reserve

Eagles Notes
There were no surprises as the Eagles got down to the 75-man roster limit by yesterday's 4 p.m. deadline. Wide receiver Jeremy Bloom and fullback Jason Davis were placed on injured reserve and will be out for the season.
The Eagles also announced that guard Adrien Clarke and linebacker Greg Richmond were designated as waived/injured.
Bloom, the Olympic skier and fifth-round draft choice, suffered a hamstring injury during minicamp and was never close to 100 percent since the beginning of training camp July 21.
Bloom returned two kickoffs for 45 yards in the Eagles' 20-10 loss at Baltimore on Aug. 17, but he reinjured his hamstring that game.
Davis suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in the Baltimore game. An undrafted free agent from Illinois, Davis had gained 32 yards on 10 preseason carries.
Clarke and Richmond both had back surgery. When a player is designated as waived/injured, he nearly always agrees to a financial settlement. Otherwise, a team has to wait until the player is healthy to waive him.

Clarke Coming Up Big at Guard
Published: 06-07-07

By Eric Allen
Senior Managing Editor

After appearing in 13 games with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005, Adrien Clarke was nowhere to be found in 2006.

?I had back surgery and actually wasn?t anywhere last year,? said the big offensive lineman following the Jets? latest OTA today.

Clarke, who actually spent his rookie season on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, had back surgery last August and was later waived by the Birds.

Clarke, a seventh-round selection by the Eagles in the 2004 draft, played tackle and guard at Ohio State, but he?s been a guard in the NFL. Andy Reid?s West Coast offense presented him more opportunities to work on his pass protection after working in a run-first outfit.

?Coming out of college I was more of a run blocker, but in Philly we were more of a pass team. Now I am just trying to be an all-around player,? he said. ?I don?t want to be recognized for one distinct thing. I want people to look at me and say, ?He can do good things at different places.? I am looking to improve all parts of my game.?

He becomes another one of the Buckeyes who don the Green & White, a list that includes center Nick Mangold, kicker Mike Nugent and linebacker Anthony Schlegel. He said, ?We bleed scarlet and gray on this team? and ?Mangold has been a great help,? but the credit extends beyond The Ohio State alums.

Just saw on ESPN that Pete Kendel is unhappy with his contract and wants either trader or released. They then said that Adrien Clark has been lining up and taking about half the reps with the first team at left guard in camp. So if Kendel gets his wish Clark may be starting this fall, though I doubt the Jets let Pete go.

There are questions on the line in front of Pennington. Left guard Pete Kendall is unhappy with his contract, and wants an extra million that he feels is owed to him after a previous restructuring. The Jets have been unwilling to negotiate thus far, and it's not known if Kendall will report to camp today. He stands to be fined $14,000 for each day of camp he misses.

If the Jets trade or release Kendall, they will have to find a replacement. The front-runner during minicamp seemed to be Adrien Clarke, who started four games for Philadelphia in 2005. The Jets also want to see left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who struggled somewhat down the stretch in 2006, put on more weight and become more consistent in his second season.

With Kendall on outs with Jets, Clarke moves in

BY TOM ROCK
[email protected]

July 30, 2007
While Pete Kendall continues to distance himself from the Jets, his apparent replacement at left guard, Adrien Clarke, is trying to fit in. Clarke, picked up as a free agent from the Eagles after he missed all of 2006 because of back surgery, has been sharing first-team reps with Kendall through the first few days of camp.

Getting acclimated on an offensive line that returns four starters can be challenging, but Clarke played with center Nick Mangold at Ohio State and said the players on either side of him, Mangold and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, have been helpful. That's quite the reversal of roles because Kendall was credited with ushering Mangold and Ferguson through their rookie seasons last year.

CLARKE READY TO REPLACE PETE

By DAN MARTIN

GONER? Disgruntled offensive lineman Pete Kendall works out at Hofstra recently ? but could be gone before the end of training camp and replaced by former Eagle Adrien Clarke.

July 31, 2007 -- If Adrien Clarke does wind up as the Jets' new left guard, replacing the disgruntled Pete Kendall, it won't be the first time he'll play next to Nick Mangold.
The two started on the offensive line together at Ohio State when Clarke was a senior and Mangold a sophomore. The Jets can only hope for as much success as the Buckeyes had with the duo on the line.
"We did well," Mangold said. "We almost went to the national championship [game]. We went to the Fiesta Bowl."

Clarke feels comfortable with Jets
Offensive lineman feels he's found a home with Gang Green

ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

Adrien Clarke, who'll replace disgruntled left guard Pete Kendall if the veteran is released or traded, and center Nick Mangold have been there and done that -- and did it pretty well.

The pair played side-by-side at Ohio State for two seasons, starting together in 2003 when Clarke was a senior and Mangold a sophomore. Four years later, they've been reunited.

"It feels like we never skipped a beat," Clarke said.

"It's definitely a great opportunity," Clark said. "Outside of everything else that's going on, to get the reps and learn the system. ... Not only that, but to get a chance to be with the guys, build up the camaraderie with the guys, it's great. I'm very excited."

It's a bit of a role reversal for Clarke and Mangold. At Ohio State, it was Clarke serving as a mentor to Mangold. Now, Mangold is schooling Clarke.

"Nick has been great," Clarke said. "All of them have. I don't know yet what I can add to my game or this team. I just do what I can. ... It feels great to see not only Nick, but Anthony Schlegel and Mike Nugent (both also attended Ohio State). It's great to see familiar faces.

New York Jets? Head Coach Eric Mangini, 8.19

On assessing G Adrien Clarke?s game on Friday?

With Adrien (Clarke), I think that he's similar to some of these other guys. There's a process going on of trying to get a comfort level and I think he's strung together some pretty good weeks of practice. I thought he played pretty well the last game. I think collectively as a group, we didn't execute and we didn't make progress. I don't think his performance was unique compared to the collective body of work.

Looks like AC has been demoted after his poor performance against the Vikes

Plus, it was somewhere between bizarre and absurd to watch 34-year-old guard Pete Kendall play (and poorly at that) center deep into the 4th quarterback in a preseason game. Kendall has resigned himself to the fact that he is going to stick in New York after he split reps with project tackle Jacob Bender at left guard in practice on Sunday. Adrien Clarke was rightly demoted.

Jets' Kendall dealt to Redskins for mid-round draft pick

The Jets will now choose between second-year veteran Adrien Clarke and rookie Jacob Bender, a sixth-round draft choice who primarily played tackle in college, to fill the void at the left guard spot.

ESPN - Jets deal unhappy O-lineman Kendall to Redskins - NFL

The trade leaves the Jets with a virtual vacuum at left guard. In recent days rookie Jacob Bender has been playing with the first offensive unit. Bender is a rookie from I-AA Nicholls State who played tackle in a triple-option offense. The Jets started the preseason with Adrien Clarke splitting time with Kendall at the position, but after a lackluster performance in last week's game against the Vikings, he was seemingly demoted to second team. Clarke has played in 13 NFL games and made four starts, all in 2005 for the Eagles. The Jets also have veteran Wade Smith as a candidate for the job. Mangini conceded that the Jets starting left guard on Sept. 9 against the Patriots could not be on the team right now. "The roster is fluid," he said.
