OL Andree Tyree (official thread)

sears3820

Sitting around in my underwear....
It looks like our OL depth may be taking a little hit. This does however open a spot for one of the talented freshmen OL to step in.

From BSB:

To recap, Tyree missed some summer workouts and got in Tressel's doghouse. He also has to get surgery on a sinus disease that he has (he has a hole in his sinus passage allowing blood to drip through it). Andree is not expected to report to camp until the week following the game against Cincinnati.

He's still on the team but the surgery will postpone his reporting to the team. He had worked himself into the mix (Top 7) OL after spring workouts but then missed a few workouts during the summer thus putting him in the doghouse.

He had a prime opportunity to get some significant PT this year but may have ruined it by not attending all the summer workouts. I guess he really disappointed the coaches and his PT or lack thereof will probably reflect it.

Aren't summer workouts optional, as in the coaches can't be there. I understand the coaches may not like that he missed out on some optional, student lead training sessions, but come on. No granted the surgery makes it illrelavant, but doesn't this kind of sound like it is against NCAA rules of non-required attendance.

So you think it's wrong to move someone to the bottom of the depth chart because he wasn't willing to do what the rest of the team did to get ready for the season? If he skipped workouts it probably means that he wasn't preparing like he should be. The coaches can't attend summer workouts but the strength coach keeps a list of who was there and the coaches will reward those who are dedicated. I think you are misunderstanding the definition of the word "optional" as it relates to CFB.

The strength and cond coaches almost always run these workouts and then pass along attendance to the coaching staff. This was the big debate after the Wheeler kid passed away a few years ago. Also since this is a voluntary thing a larger medical staff is not always required if there at all so if there are problems then things turn ugly.
Back onto topic I hope that Tyree works everything out and gets out of the doghouse but that might be tough.

Well, if the word Optional does not really mean optional then fine, the coaches should be able to drop him on the depth chart. But if the workouts are truly player optional and the coaches have no say in them, then no, the coaches should NOT be able to drop them on the depth chart for not attending.

Lets say it is optional for you to train an extra 50 hours during the summer for your job. But should you be demoted if you don't take those training, even if you perform at the same level as your co-workers whom did take the "optional" training. Again, what does optional truly mean.

Again, my understanding was that the strength coach is there to protect the players from over doing it, etc, not for squealing on the players.

That's just it though.

If you're not going to these extra sessions, your performance will no doubt reflect that. I don't think a guy that has missed a lot of conditioning/weight-lifting workouts is going to be playing at the same level as the ones that did.

I agree with you. But how did they know he was not at the same level when they hadn't started yet. It probably would have been fairly evident that he was not up to the task, but that should be decided on the field by the coaches, and not by what they only heard through the grapevine during optional summer sessions. Besides, it is all moot since he is not in camp, so obviously he would be on the bottom of the chart after missing the entire camp.

I don't subscribe to any pay service so I couldn't read the article, but does Jim Tressel make the list of people in his "doghouse" public? Tyree is in JT's doghouse according to who? I doubt that JT came out and said that the reason for Tyree not reporting to camp is due to his failure to attend voluntary summer workouts. Maybe Tyree missed some workouts because of his sinus problem. That seems like a valid excuse.

Maybe he didn't report simply because he has to have surgery to repair his sinus problem. I wouldn't read too much more into it than that.
