Bengals notebook: Center Billy Price practices, WR John Ross (hamstring) still day-to-day
Tyler Dragon, Cincinnati EnquirerPublished 12:17 p.m. ET Aug. 2, 2019 | Updated 9:36 p.m. ET Aug. 2, 2019

Christmas in August? For Billy Price, Friday had that vibe.

The Cincinnati Bengal center passed a physical and was activated off the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Friday. His return to the field had him felling jolly.

“It's like Christmas morning, something I've been waiting for. Again, it's a process getting back from injuries, etc., so I'm happy to get back out with the boys, kind of start the chemistry, kind of dust things off from OTAs,” Price said. “I know we finished up on a pretty high note with the guys and the starting five, so I know I'm excited to get back out there, they are excited to get back out there, and it's just one step closer to game day.”

Price was sidelined at the start of training camp with an undisclosed injury. He had been riding a stationary bike and watching his teammates practice until Friday. The Bengals plan to ease Price along during practice.

The 2018 first-round draft pick from the Ohio State Buckeyes made 10 starts during his rookie season in the NFL. He suffered an arm injury at the NFL combine preceding the draft and a foot injury just two games into the 2018 season.

The Bengals hope Price lends stability to an offensive line that lost top draft pick Jonah Williams to what is believed to be a season-ending injury and Clint Boling to retirement. Price, left tackle Cordy Glenn, right tackle Bobby Hart and right guard John Miller are penciled in to start along the O-line for Cincinnati this year. The left guard position is still to be determined. John Jerry, Christian Westerman and Trey Hopkins are the leaders in the club house to start Week 1 at left guard.

Wyatt Davis, Billy Price Named to BTN’s All-Decade Team

Rising junior Wyatt Davis and 2017 Rimington Award winner Billy Price were named on Tuesday to BTN’s Big Ten Football All-Decade Team. Davis is the first active player to earn a spot on the team. He and Price are joined along the offensive line by Michigan’s Taylor Lewan, Indiana’s Dan Feeney, Iowa’s Brandon Scherff and Wisconsin’s Michael Deiter.

Price is one of the great offensive linemen in Ohio State’s storied history. A two-time All-American, including a unanimous selection in 2017, Price is one of just six Buckeye offensive linemen to win a major national award when he was named the recipient of the 2017 Rimington Trophy as the nation’s outstanding center. Price also was named the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace offensive lineman of the year that season and set a program record with 55 consecutive games started from 2014 through 2017.

Billy Price was an extremely accomplished four-year starter at Ohio State. It began with him helping the Buckeyes win a national championship as a starting guard as a redshirt freshman in 2014, and culminated with Price being named an All-American and the best center in college football (winning the Rimington Trophy) in 2017.

Price parlayed that success into being a first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals (No. 21 overall) in 2018. The native of Austintown, Ohio, signed a four-year, $11.7 million contract with the Bengals, which included $9.15 million guaranteed.

Price started 10 games at center for the Bengals in 2018, but did not play up to expectations. However, he was a rookie and dealt with injuries -- such as a foot ailment that he suffered in just his second professional game -- and it often takes longer for things to click for offensive linemen. But just the fact Price missed games due to an injury was news considering he is the all-time iron man at Ohio State, holding the school record with 55 consecutive starts (did not miss a game in his career)

Hopes were still high for Price entering the 2019 season, but he lost a training camp battle for the starting center job with Trey Hopkins, a former undrafted free agent out of the University of Texas. Price was moved to guard and ended up starting just half of the 16 regular season games (7 at LG, 1 at RG) and was relegated to a reserve role by the end of the season.

Any hopes of battling for the starting center job were dashed when the Bengals signed Hopkins to a three-year, $20.4 million ($6M guaranteed) extention following the 2019 season.

Now entering his third season with the Bengals in 2020, Price is penciled in as a "super sub" of sorts. He is expected to back up Hopkins at center, and also back up both starting guard positions. Interestingly, the Bengals' starting left guard is Ohio State product Michael Jordan, who the team selected in the fourth round of the draft in 2019.

It is not what Price or anyone else anticipated for his third season in the NFL, but Price is not giving up on becoming a starter. The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder trained with offensive line guru Duke Manyweather in Dallas during the offseason. Price initially contacted Manyweather to see if he could help him with what Price thought was a back injury that would flair up when he was blocking. As it turns out, it was not a back ailment.

Great to see. Has he picked his game up this year, @RB07OSU or any other Bengals fans who pay close attention?
He’s definitely looked more comfortable at C than where he started the year filling in for XSF at RG. Had trouble with a few snaps against Cleveland, but still played pretty well overall. The OL as a unit is still rough, but they’ve improved considerably since the first couple of games.
