Scout $ - Decision Soon For Bobek?

2/17

By Trieu...his father says the OSU staff watched his son's film the closest of any staff and also took time to evaluate his son as a person...his father says they are not looking to drag out the process and they are looking for the best place for their son to spend four years.

Don't expect this to go on past March unless his offer sheet goes uber-national...

Right on the money!

Fremd's Bobek commits to Ohio State

Brian Bobek was caught a bit off guard when Ohio State made a football scholarship offer about a month ago.

The Fremd junior center knew one of the country's premier college programs doesn't just give out offers to anyone. Bobek was tempted to make his decision right there but then decided to step back and make sure.

On Tuesday morning, Bobek was sure Ohio State was the right place for him as he gave the program a verbal commitment.

"It's pretty special when you get offered this early from a school of that caliber," said Fremd coach Mike Donatucci.

"It's a dream come true," said Bobek, whose parents went to Iowa and his brother Jeff is a freshman walk-on fullback at Michigan State. "I've watched the Big Ten all of my life and my parents are incredibly happy with Ohio State. It's a good situation for me."

The 6-foot-3, 258-pound Bobek also had offers from Purdue, Michigan State and Ball State with interest picking up from Notre Dame, Michigan and Illinois.

But the future possibilities of playing early at Ohio State also looked bright since it is short on centers after starter Mike Brewster, who will be a senior when Bobek is a freshman.

"The offer was too good to pass up," Bobek said. "I was just kind of overwhelmed. I wasn't really expecting to be offered by Ohio State for awhile.

Re: Bobek offered by Ohio StateReply Yes, I'm dad. I played for three years at Iowa after juco. Came to Iowa as a walk-on under Cummings and Coach Fry gave me a scholarship. For whatever reason, Iowa has never contacted Brian and I didn't want to push him on them. I will be sending his film to Iowa today. We have the greatest love for the University of Iowa and respect for Coach Ferentz. Ohio State, though, has been recruiting Brian for a while and has demonstrated their belief in him as a player and person. Brian will not make a hasty decision as he will consider other schools that have been recruiting him and Iowa. I believe he is one of the best centers in the country, but now I can say that and people may agree. Probably wont post anymore. I love all Hawk fans. Well, most.

Re: Bobek offered by Ohio StateReply Brian did camp at Iowa when he was entering his freshman year. Far to early to evaluate, but he did very well. I personally spoke to KF about Brian in May and he told me "that they don't miss kids". Given enough time that may be true, but Brian was no secret. I agree with much of what has been expressed by you all, but there was no effort to follow up. Not one letter while Brian has been receiving interest from almost every other school in the midwest as well as some on both coasts. Our high school coach has been great. OSU called our coach to request that Brian attend their camp after I sent one e-mail about him and they have been in touch ever since.
I could have sent his film earlier (than today), but I made our interest clear long ago. It would have been nice for them to request film on the son of a football letterman, 28 season ticket holder, Silver Hawk contributor.

Having said that, Iowa is still my home and I will always be a Hawkeye. KF is one of the best coaches in the country, as is Coach Doyle, and many of the other coaches. I just wish my loyalty would have been returned.

Brian is still very interested in Iowa and I want him to go where he feels most comfortable. If they read this post, and they may very well hear about it, Iowa may say forget it. I hope not, but I think I have a good reason to be disappointed. OSU is a great offer and others appear to be in the works unless Brian decides sooner than later. This has been very therapeutic. Thanks for listening!

Re: Bobek offered by Ohio StateReply Brian wasn't invited to Iowa's advanced camp. He was invited to ND, MSU, and OSU after one inquiry. I made my inquiry to Iowa in May 09. Brian is 6' 2.5" and many schools want minimum 6'3" at guard. That's never stopped Iowa, so I doubt that would be a huge issue. Brian is stronger and more powerful than many, if not most, D-1 O-linemen. Benches 430, squats 550, cleans 300+, vert jump 32", broad jump 9 ft. and he doesn't turn 17 until spring.

It's probably best that I conclude my posting. Its easy to want to respond to questions and/or conflicting opinions, but we all believe what we want to believe. We're happy with the situation as it stands right now. It would be fine if there are more options to consider, but we're happy that the school that has won the last 5 Big Ten championships wants Brian.
