OL Darryl Baldwin (Official Thread)

good comments from Urbs and Herman about his development...

Baldwin, who was recruited as a defensive lineman, is likely to serve as a backup at both tackle positions behind returning starter Jack Mewhort on the left side and new starter Taylor Decker on the right.

“He’s one of the most improved players on the team,” Meyer said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned him. What a great kid. … Just a hard-working guy that gets great grades and is a wonderful player. Great, great representative of Ohio State.”

Was glad to hear this piece of news, as well as Urban's overall positive assessment of the OL backups. This is big news, not only for next season, but for this season as well. Great team effort (the players, Warriner, Marotti, et. al.).

Great news indeed! Hopefully he will see a lot of playing time this year. It will be interesting to see what next years line up will look like?:
LT - Baldwin / Dodson
LG - Farris / Price
C - Elfin / Boren
RG - Underwood / Brown
RT - Decker / Lisle

Mavety could be part of the equation as well if he signs.

It is a huge relief to see that there is life on the offensive line after this year. Meyer praised Dodson also, as well as Elfin. The reinforcements coming in the 2014 recruiting class will provide additional depth.

Darryl Baldwin's move to offensive tackle in the spring of 2012 cast his career in a new light, and he's not the only OSU lineman to flip-flop between offense and defense recently in the search for the right fit to help the team and the player.
“Learning the position was a whole new thing for me,” Baldwin said, “so I feel like it took a little longer to acclimate to it. But it really just depends on what you're doing.”
Baldwin may not play at all against the Badgers, not unless something happens to starting left tackle Jack Mewhort. But his goal is to claim that starting job next year, where he may battle Cleveland Heights grad Kyle Dodson for the job, and to prove he's ready now if needed.

For a defensive player who only played tight end on offense in high school, and had never pass-blocked before the move, that's pretty good progress. The Florida A&M game gave Baldwin a taste of what offensive line in college football is like.

“It feels a lot better than sitting on the sideline after a long week of practice,” Baldwin said.

Because, no matter what side of the ball it is, playing is the point.

“Since moving over to offensive line I feel a lot more comfortable,” Baldwin said.

With his long arms and 6-foot-6, 310-pound frame, Baldwin believes his body type is a better fit for the offensive line. That's what the coaches saw in him, and he's glad they saw it. If he's starting next season as a fifth-year senior, he'll be even happier about it.
