OT Dawand Jones (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

He's the only Buckeye to make the Week 1 Team of the Week and was by far Ohio State's highest-graded player on Thursday.

How PFF does their collegiate grades has always been a head scratcher to me? Some of the things they come up with really makes me question their formula and commitment to continuous improvement of their process and conclusions.

That having been said. DJ played well enough for such a mammoth human being parked at tackle. There were still half dozen snaps he lowered his head & eyes, leaned too far outside of his stability and made poor contact on the edge. That takes time, conditioning, and reps. I'm hoping he gets there.

His work on the interior zone though was pretty damn outstanding and this Oline's ability to move bodies has been, so far, impressive. DJ is the largest (literal) reason why. Looking forward to seeing his progress.

PFF is not using quantitative data on its player grades. It is opinion based and prone to bias and error from small sample sizes.

Having said that, their revenue model relies on stat-nerd subscriptions and subs paid by NFL teams and real NFL scouts, plus they have a staff of over 600 videographers to pay. It just wouldn’t make good business sense to not take the grading process seriously or to publish grades that are wildly inaccurate.

Note, Cris Collinsworth is majority owner and relocated the company to Cincinnati in 2014.

As for DJ, PFF’s breakdown clearly shows he’s a +2 on nearly every run play, but he needs a lot of work on pass-pro to be considered an elite tackle.

Having Corey Coleman as their #1 Draft eligible receiver or multiple of their writers and statisticians penning Johnny Manziel as their QB1, while I'm sure is done with a "serious grading process"... is clearly not without its (serious) flaws.

Their individual NFL grades aren't bad. Their cumulative Oline grades are debatable. Their collegiate ---> top 100 NFL draft rankings have some ugly blemishes.

At least on DJ they see some of the need to clean up straight drop pass-pro.

I saw he crossed up his feet and fell very noticeably on one play. I wonder how much that one play (or probably a handful) impacted his grade when the total sample size was only 48 plays minus the run plays (easy enough to actually look up but I don’t feel like it).

What I’m saying is, yes, he needs improvement in pass blocking, but that grade is possibly artificially low due to a small sample size.

Conversely the grade could be artificially high based on small sample size. Works both ways.

The tape supports the grade. His kick step, knee bend and first strike need a great deal of work. But we have a great Oline coach and by all accounts DJ is a hard worker.

Haha okay I saw the same thing and hadn't mentioned it. I laughed pretty hard at the play...

He fell over and the DE didn't know what to do.. instinctively though Dawand tried to block the DE with his leg.

No doubt that hurt his grade and although it was a small sample he still performed better than NPF who's potentially a 1st round guy.

I saw that too. Surprising given he’s generally got good feet from the basketball background. But I also suspect that coaching, as @Buckeneye suggests, with his work ethic and the basketball background should hopefully make for quick fixes where he has some deficiencies.

Love the 'Big Thanos' moniker. Thought Dawand was inserted at RT because he was pretty good pass blocking? Basketball feet, etc. Startling to see him as 'needs improvement'. Heck, doesn't he go up against JT, Sawyer, and Zack every day in practice? With Coach J standing right behind him with 'pointers'? Anyway, hats off to Thayer to suggest the switch. Glad we're starting to get some 'body-bag' games so the 2/3's can get some game time experience. Also, haven't seen/read Paris Johnson taking a turn at either tackle, especially if he's earmarked to be tOSU's LT next year....Go Bucks!
