OT Dawand Jones (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

Also, I found out earlier this year he’s the cousin of one my friends/high school basketball teammates. Turns out Dawand was the little (big!) kid throwing up 3 pointers and shots during halftimes. Good to see he kept up those hooping skills.

Little more excited to see him on the gridiron.

DAWAND JONES, THE LARGEST PLAYER IN OHIO STATE FOOTBALL HISTORY, HAS US BUZZING HEADING INTO THE SUMMER

104684_h.jpg

Every year, we get to learn the names, faces, and personalities of new freshmen arriving to play football for Ohio State. Each class brings five-stars, high four-stars and plenty of players we can't wait to see on the field.

But every now and then, a guy arrives and transcends the football stuff, making a bigger impression on the staff of Eleven Warriors. When Tyvis Powell stayed firm as the first commitment in Jim Tressel's final class, despite the turbulence of the coach's removal, and then followed it up with an open letter to fans, that meant something.

Years later, when Demario McCall brought his incredible collection of dirt bike photos, he became an instant favorite around Eleven Warriors HQ. He's been great ever since.

This year, it's offensive lineman Dawand Jones who has us buzzing.

Let's start with his size. The three-star prospect from Indianapolis' Ben Davis High School checks in at 6-foot-8, 360 pounds. He's the heaviest freshman to ever sign with Ohio State, and one inch shorter than the tallest, tackle Kevin Feder, who arrived in 2015 and soon found his way to Kansas via transfer.

What I'm trying to say is that Dawand Jones is the largest man to ever play football for Ohio State. Large enough for upperclassmen to take notice.

But he's not just mass. The dude can move!

Saturday, Jones played in the annual all-star game featuring the best hardwood stars from Indiana taking on the best from the state of Kentucky. He wowed the Bankers Life Fieldhouse with his rim-rattling, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, and two swipes in Indiana's 120-74 victory.

Re: The 6-foot-8, 350-pound specimen has gone from a player that had no technique as a junior to a promising prospect early in his final prep season. Also a Division-I basketball recruit, the massive Jones moves well in lining up at both tackle positions. He can bend, he can run, he's playing at a different speed than he was as a junior, and he played with a motor all night in his team's 41-36 loss at Avon (Ind.) High on Friday night.

How is this guy only rated a 3 star? This guy has to have the most "upside" (i.e. potierntial for improvement) than anyone else on the team. He'll probably redshirt this year; however, in 4 years could be another Orlando Pace.

Yeah but Pace was Pace as a freshman. There may be another like him one day. Maybe.

Sorry, it takes me a while to learn these guys faces. Is he the one on the left or on the right?

LEAVING HIS FIRST LOVE. Noted gigantic human Dawand Jones may be heading to Ohio State to play football, but his first love is basketball (and mine would be too if my size let me play the game like it's nerf ball with third graders).

But Jones knows with his rare size and mobility, he's probably best suited for a sport that involves people moving.

From Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star:

There is no doubt about how much Jones loves basketball. “If you know Dawand, basketball is his first love,” Windham said. “He’d do anything for it. But we know how much money he is going make in football.”

And that’s the thing. There are those who believe Jones is capable being an NFL draft pick if he fulfills his potential at Ohio State. Saturday night was probably his final competitive basketball game, which Jones feeling a little nostalgic.

“I knew it was my last time getting out there so I wanted to have fun with it,” he said. “The thing I’ll probably miss the most is playing for Ben Davis. It was a joy. We built a brotherhood over there. It was amazing to be able to do what we did.”

Beyers had coached against Jones while at Warren Central (he’s now at Franklin Central). He also smiled when Jones’ name was mentioned.

“Dawand gives you everything he has,” Beyers said. “It’s for short periods of time. He keeps the team up and laughing and he’s a great personality -- a huge personality. He lightens the moment sometimes. Any team he would play on in any sport, I think he would help that team become a better team.”

The good news is, if football doesn't work, he'd be the most sought-after bouncer free agent in Columbus bar history.
