OL Jamarco Jones (Official Thread)

SKULL SESSION: URBAN MEYER'S NEW SECURITY BLANKET, JARED SULLINGER'S NBA DREAMS AND JAMARCO JONES WAS A STEAL FOR THE SEAHAWKS

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. Jamarco Jones' slide in the draft mystified me. For the past two years, I thought he was one of the most consistent players on the entire roster and an anchor on the offense.

NFL teams didn't think so. After an admittedly abysmal combine performance, Jones fell all the way to the fifth round to the Seattle Seahawks. Despite his athletic limitations, that might turn out to be the steal of the draft.

From Oliver Connolly of FieldGulls.com:

The Ohio State grad tested in the 11th percentile of the leaping test and the 5th percentile (!) of the agility drill. He can’t explode out of his stance; he can’t shuffle his feet, is what the league concluded from its pre-draft battery of tests.

Nonsense. Teams, typically (and rightly), favor pro-size and athleticism over technique. You can teach hand position, you can’t teach first-step quickness. But I feel they missed on Jones.

The athletic tests make grim reading, but the tape tells a different story.

Jones was one of the most technically proficient and well-rounded linemen in the 2018 class. Or any recent class, for that matter.

It is always fun when players turn an ingrained physical weakness into a tool. Jones isn’t an explosive leaper. As such, he’s developed a fluid, efficient pass set that’s as pretty as they come. One that allows him to get in position, in-time, as well and consistently as those who seemingly have rockets snuck into their cleats.

He might not be the most athletic guy, but he held his own against elite talent for two years. He's polished, disciplined and has great technique.

Plus, he went against Ohio State's defensive line for four years in practice. Based on how many current NFL players were on those lines, Jones should be qualified to start on day one.

STEAL OF THE DRAFT. In a shocking turn of events, it's looking like drafting a two-year starter at Ohio State at the end of the fifth round might turn out to be quite a steal.

The guy is a pass blocking champion in an increasingly pass-first league. I understand he didn't perform well at the combine, but when someone has the proven tape like Jones, you shouldn't overthink things.

This will always blow me away. Some guy who can't play the game but can jump high and tap a peg and star in the Underwear Olympics goes fling up the draft board while some other guy has 2+ years of quality action on tape to be evaluated on and he slides.

After losing right tackle Isaiah Battle to a knee injury earlier in the game, the Seattle Seahawkswent down two tackles mid-way through the fourth quarter on Thursday night.

Rookie Jamarco Jones was carted off the field after being rolled up on. Lining up at left tackle with George Fant still limited, two players fell into Jones as Alex McGough maneuvered the pocket. After the play, Jones was seen grimacing in pain and holding the back of his left ankle.

The cart was brought out for a dejected Jones, as his fellow Seahawks linemen came over to him from the field and sidelines.

Later on in the fourth quarter, Seattle updated Jones’ status as questionable to return with a lower leg injury. The questionable designation was an encouraging sign for the severity of the injury, although Jones was held out as a precautionary measure.

Jones was a left tackle throughout his career at Ohio State, however he was expected to compete at right tackle with Germain Ifedi still struggling with penalties. With the Seahawks losing both Battle and Jones in preseason Week 1, Willie Beavers is expected to take on the bulk of the backup snaps behind Ifedi.

Expect further updates on Jones’ status over the next couple days, as Seattle is off until Sunday.

Update: Pete Carroll was asked about both Battle and Jones’ injuries in his press conference on Thursday night, saying Battle has a sprained knee that isn’t severe. Jones’ x-rays came back negative, however he has a ‘legit’ ankle sprain.

When they brought the air cast out I said, "Mother-trucker, I hate preseason games for this very reason".

The HAS is no prize but I'd imagine by the end of camp he should have most of his range/mobility/flexibility back.

LET'S MAKE A DEAL! In one of the more random things to flutter across my timeline, Dawn Elliott and Urica Jones – the mothers of Ezekiel Elliott and Jamarco Jones – were on the game show Let's Make a Deal together.

I love how cryptic they were being about who their sons were. Watching Wayne Brady and the producer gradually piece together that Dawn is Zeke's mom was hilarious.
