OL Jim Cordle (Official Thread)

Datish was the backup center last year IIRC.
That is correct. Additionally, according to Person's dad, he is not and has not been a back-up at center. Worst case scenario they do have Andrew Moses, walk-on from Watterson, who is a bit undersized at the moment. OTOH, the kid looked pretty good to me in both the N/S and Big 33 games. As another poster noted, more likely Winner gets moved if Mangold and Datish are unavailable.

As to Cordle's injury, he is quoted as saying he "heard a pop" in his foot. If he tore a ligament or tendon in his foot, they may indeed decide to RS him so that it doesn't become a chronic condition.

Quarterback Troy Smith was also not in shoulder pads and did not take part in the early quarterback drills in today's second session. He was also wearing sneakers, not football shoes. All the other quarterbacks were wearing shoulder pads and spikes."
He spent the practice time with Butch Reynolds on the track according to one of the local TV stations

And I wouldn't worry about Cordle yet, it could be anything...the coaching staff is always going to be cautious in preseason

According to todays Dispatch (on Cordle):

"Freshman offensive lineman Jim Cordle of Lancaster was on crutches with a walking boot on his right foot yesterday. He said he felt something pop in his foot on Friday, but does not know the extent of the injury."

Do you think Cordle's injury will turn into a redshirt for him? I know he played in the spring, but missing fall camp is tough to overcome.

I agree, missing camp is a killer. They seem to be preparing Datish to be the utility OL backup. My guess, is Datish will spell a tackle on one series, a guard on the next and maybe even Mangold once games are solidified. Cordle impressed them in the spring and they want him ready for 06. Depends on how quickly he comes back. He may be out another 2 weeks or so.

Datish may have the edge because of his intellligence and the fact that he is a Senior. But there will definitely be competition between Datish and Cordle and so I don't think that it is a given. I remember reading how nasty Cordle is and how impressed the coaches were with his play. So much so that they were considering moving Mangold out to Guard to make room for him.

Datish's experience is the trump card here. A year as a backup, with increasing playing time as the season progresses, will do Cordle a world of good. As was kept being pointed out all year long, Mangold was the field general of blocking assignments...you'd constantly see him pointing out who to block before snapping the ball. You can't expect a first-year player to come right in and do that at the Big Ten level...

Agreed. Mili said it perfectly...It is tough to overcome experience with talent and seeing as how Datish is no slouch talent wise it will be that much tougher for Cordle. He'll have his day.

Nick Mangold did. Even spelled Stepanovich at center a couple times in the 2002 national championship game.

Cordle has a FULL year under his belt now, after coming in early for spring practice. They'll push each other, and the best center will play. If it's close, I'm thinking Datish will stay at guard due to his experience there, but I'm not psychic. Remember how the coaches were raving about how good Cordle was during the spring. He'd have burned his redshirt backing up Mangold had it not been for Jimmy getting hurt!

The race is certainly not closed in regards to who plays center next year fellas. Gonna be an interesting spring on the O-line.

Mangold wasn't the starter in 2002, and played fairly sparingly IIRC...just as I'm suggesting for Cordle. Also, Cordle doesn't have anywhere near a "full" year under his belt. He was hurt early in fall practice.

Datish played sparingly at center this year too. Both he and Downing have the most experience at guard than anyone else on the team, yet there's no arguing who should be playing guard. Cordle wasn't injured the entire year either- the staff figured there wasn't any use in having him play for only part of a year... much like what happend with D.Lyons and Freeman. He's being groomed at center, whereas Datish can play darn near everywhere on the line (even heard that we're gonna use him occasionally like we used Tyree in The Game as a blocking TE)

There's no reason to paint the end zones that Datish will start at center next year. Spring ball will tell the story
