OL John Peterson (Official Thread)

I was luke-warm about the last couple of hires, but this one really has me pumped. At the end of last season lots of folks were lamenting the fact that OSU had the second best OL in the state - behind Miami. To get the coach that put that line together, regardless of his role on the staff at the moment, is great news.

Can you imagine how Mike Stoops feels. Just right in the middle of spring practice Jon Peterson jumps ship, but thats the way it goes i guess. The
one positive that i can see here, is that a load will be lifted off of bollmans
backside with Jons addition to the staff. This will free up more time for Jim bollman to concentrate on his blocking schemes to be used. Ya just have to think bollman is relieved at some point.

Football Coaches Post Practice Quotes

John Peterson, tight ends coach

On Jake Ballard, sophomore tight end

"He's getting better every single day. He's a young strong powerful player with explosive hips. As he learns the blocking schemes and gets stronger he gets better."

On the play of the tight ends

"We have two starting tight ends (Rory Nicol and Jake Ballard) and Brandon Smith is right there and is getting ready to step in."

On the play of Rory Nicol and Jake Ballard

"Both have the ability to be dominant blockers. Both of them are front side back side, so you can't get a pinpoint on where the plays going and they both compliment each other well."

On if the team will overlook Northwestern

"No, I think the reality of playing in the Big Ten and how you have to be at your peak will motivate them. This is the new first game of our season."

Well, if some people would refrain from reading 100 pages of a game thread there'd be more posts in other threads... :tongue2:

Bingo............... You hit the nail on the head in this thread Mili. I started to read alot of the threads in this post because I wanted to get to the bottom
of alot of un-answered questions in regards to the status of Jim Bollman and John Petersons work ethics. Here we have 2 good coaches qualified to handle the situation for the Offensive Line scheme of things and we seem to be strugglinto the 4th game of the season of 2007.

The national championship game was a complete meltdown against Florida. Something that I will get over some day. But our strength in the BIG 10 conference has relied on the play of the offensive lineman. We have great powerful running backs and good ends and wide receivers but we have to rely on the O/L to be the key to get the job done.

The defense is in good order and it would be great if we could get some kind of equal work from the interior offensive lineman. I hope
coach Peterson and coach Bollman can work out the Kinks in this part of the problem. Fix that and I think we can be better in the BIG 10 and to the Buckeye Nation.

OSU assistant offers lessons for life Written by Sentinel Staff Wednesday, 16 July 2008

PERRYSBURG ? Football players from across Northwest Ohio received some helpful advice not only on the game they love, but also for the obstacles that they may soon face as they step away from the comfort of high school and enter college or their chosen careers.

On Tuesday, former Ohio State University offensive lineman and current Buckeyes? tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator John Peterson spoke to the players who make up the rosters for the 18th Annual Northwest Ohio Regional All-Star football game, which will be held Friday at Toledo Whitmer High School at 7:30 p.m.
Peterson was a former starting offensive guard for Ohio State and was a four-year lettermen from 1987-1990. He played under former head coaches Earle Bruce and John Cooper.
Peterson has been the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at OSU since 2004.
?I tell guys all the time it doesn?t matter how you get there, it?s what you do when you get there,? Peterson told the players before practice at Perrysburg Junior High School. ?It?s the same message that they?ve heard from their high school coaches. They?ll hear the same things if they?re going on to college.
?Do the right thing. Learn to manage your time. Learn to make the right decisions when no one is looking.?

Who's That Coach? : It's not a major change, but there has been a bit of an adjustment in the coaching duties with respect to the offensive line.

John Peterson

Until this season Jim Bollman has coached the OSU offensive line, but this year Bollman will concentrate on centers and guards. OSU assistant John Peterson will coach the tackles and tight ends. Prior to this season, Peterson had coached the tight ends only while handling duties as OSU's recruiting coordinator as well. Peterson was an offensive lineman at OSU and lettered in 1987, 88, 89 and 90.

In his very first role as an assistant coach Peterson coached the offensive line at the University of Akron from 1995 through 1998. In 1997 the Zips boasted the 11th ranked rushing attack in the nation and allowed just 10 sacks all season. Peterson assumed the duties of offensive line coach at Miami (Ohio) University in February, 1999 and earned the role of running game coordinator in in March, 2001. In the 2003 season the RedHawks averaged 502 yards and 43 points per game. Peterson was hired by OSU in April, 2004.

John Peterson, the Ohio State recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, encourages questions from recruits.

"Do your homework," Peterson said. "The bottom line of our message to kids is to do your homework and ask questions. See it for your own eyes. Our goal, anytime, is to get kids on campus to see for themselves what's going on in the daily lives of the players in our program.

"Kids can read into scenarios as they choose."

OSU coaches were encouraged, Peterson said, by the response in three opportunities for prospects to visit campus in the winter and three more this spring before the scrimmage Saturday.

The Buckeyes' list of commitments for 2012 has not grown past five since the December pledge of offensive lineman Jacoby Boren (Pickerington, Ohio/Central). In addition to Perry, offensive lineman Kyle Kalis (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) and running back Bri'onte Dunn (Canton, Ohio/Glenoak) own spots on the ESPNU 150 Watch List.

As for how the investigation and bad press over the suspensions might impact recruiting, Peterson said it's too early to know.

"Time will ultimately tell," he said. "I'm sure there are things that we don't know, but I know that the staff and the head coach are going 100 mph in recruiting this next class."
