OL John Peterson (Official Thread)

How to play college ball?

I would love to play college football, but I am not sure where to start. I had decided to play lacrosse in college and now I am thinking I would like to see if any colleges would be interested in me for football. Can you give me any insight as to where to start? This is the link to my highlight film so far from this year.

I appreciate any advice!

UAB offensive line coach John Peterson is a former coach and player at Ohio State.

Part of the reason is John Peterson, whom McGee hired to coach the offensive line after Joe Gilbert's short term as the program's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Peterson is a Middletown, Ohio, native who played for Ohio State from 1987 to 1990 and spent a significant part of his coaching career at his alma mater, including the past eight seasons.

McGee said Peterson's name kept popping up when he called friends in the coaching profession about his team's coaching vacancy. One of the recommendations came from former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, and McGee made a call to Peterson soon afterward.

"I didn't know Coach McGee personally, but we had quite a few people where we were closely networked," Peterson said. "It was one of those things where you don't know someone but you really know someone from a distance. I asked the wife and kids, 'Hey, how about moving to Birmingham?' " His next call was to his parents, who still live in Middletown.

"When I told my mom I was leaving the state, she said, 'It's about time you left home,' " Peterson said.

Peterson admittedly didn't seek much information about his group when he arrived on campus. He preferred using firsthand knowledge of the players -- both on and off the field.

"I don't believe in going back and evaluating," Peterson said. "You don't know the things they're taught, what they're trying to do, so I didn't watch any old tape."

Ex-Ohio State player and coach returns to 'Shoe

COLUMBUS, Ohio --

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) What's brewing with the 2012 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYES BUZZ: It'll be a homecoming for one member of the UAB traveling party when the Blazers come to play Ohio State on Saturday at noon.

John Peterson, a superb offensive lineman for the Buckeyes 1987-90, returned to his alma mater to coach the tight ends and serve as recruiting coordinator for eight years. He was not retained when Urban Meyer took over as head coach last November.

Meyer said it was not a sign or disrespect for Peterson.

"I was here when John was playing, so I know John. He's a great coach, great guy," said Meyer, a graduate assistant under Earle Bruce in 1987. "I wanted to hire guys that had spread offense (experience) because I got stuck before where I hired guys that don't have the same alignment, same philosophy. You're in there beating your face against the wall instead of all for one, and one for all."

Peterson is in charge of the offensive linemen at UAB.

One of his best friends, and former teammates, is Luke Fickell, the Buckeyes' defensive coordinator.

"I know my wife and his wife are very, very good friends and stay in contact," Fickell said. "That's probably the worst thing about what I do; I don't stay in contact with a lot of guys really all that well. But I've got the utmost of respect for John and his entire family and what a person he is."
