OL Josh Myers (2nd Team All American, Green Bay Packers)

Josh Myers will be interesting to watch. Much like Kyle Kalis before him, he has been hyped for years only to see that hype wane as others in his class begin to match his size and outmatch his technique. If he puts in the work, he can have an Elflein-type career. If he doesn't... Kalis is the flipside of that coin.

Maybe we get an angry hulk with something to prove.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Here's here early to get started and has said in interviews that he's aware of where he needs work and is willing to do it. Maybe this de-ranking is motivating. Maybe we get an angry hulk with something to prove.

I agree. It's a good thing he got dropped. The areas of improvement are there, regardless. It's best if he's aware of it and doesn't come in thinking he's entitled to anything.

Eh, I don't think he ever had an entitlement problem in the first place. Seems like a humble hard-working kid

Yeah, and aside from that, plenty of people find motivation from within. I'd even go so far as to say that most who make it to this level have abnormally high levels of self-motivation and internal locus of control. No need for some jagoffs jock sniffers to motivate guys like this.

With Big Shoes to Fill, Freshman Josh Myers Forging His Own Journey

Will Josh Myers be able to pick up where others have left off?

The state of Ohio has had a long list of ballyhooed high school offensive linemen over the years, most of whom ended up playing their college football at Ohio State. Names like Orlando Pace, Korey Stringer, Taylor Decker, or Pat Elflein dot the walls inside the Ohio State football facilities like lamp posts of what has been and what could be for those thinking of joining.

Freshman Josh Myers is the latest in-state great to end up a Buckeye, and he's seen those same walls. An Army All-American from Miamisburg, Myers knows all about the names and legacies he is following, and some say he is the next in line.

"Next in line certainly is big shoes to fill, so if I’m anywhere near any of those guys I’ll be alright," he said of those legacies.

Having a place in such lineage is certainly a point of pride, but so is the place that made Myers what he is today.

Ohio State had each of the 2017 signees write a letter to "Buckeye Nation", which they then tweeted out on Signing Day. Myers' letter speaks directly about his hometown, to whom he is indebted.

"My biggest motivator for being great has to be my hometown," he wrote. "Miamisburg has had my back from the start and nothing makes me more motivated than to make everyone back home proud. That place will always be so special to me."

Enrolled and already in the weight room at Ohio State, that motivation is carrying Myers through what is usually a difficult transition for all freshmen, especially the big guys. As an offensive lineman, however, Myers has a formula that has worked for him pretty well so far.

"I always work hard," he said. "I try and do the little things right, and then I’m pretty quick."

Josh Myers Firmly in Mix to Start at Center for Buckeyes This Year

Josh-Myers-Matt-Burrell--1170x780.jpg

Before spring football began for the Buckeyes, it was thought that fifth-year senior Brady Taylor and fouth-year junior Matt Burrell would compete to fill the vacancy left by the departure of center Billy Price.

Once camp got underway, however, redshirt freshman Josh Myers was also in the conversation.

Myers, a former 5-star offensive tackle, redshirted last season as a true freshman. To most people on the outside, he was expected to provide depth this season at guard and then make a bid to start in 2019.

He apparently has a different plan, however.

Things did not go well early on for Myers, but that was to be expected. Moving to center is rarely an easy transition for anybody, let alone a young player. But it is better to move him in the spring and get the kinks worked out than to do it in the fall when the timeline is much more compressed.

Those initial kinks had Brady Taylor looking like the odds-on favorite in 2018.

Eventually, however, Josh Myers got the hang of things, and his play showed the improvement.

“I think his understanding, I think his snap consistency got better,” said offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. “We grade that every day on a chart, so they know he was all over the place because he was trying to snap the ball and make all the blocks that we do, so that was new for him for the first time.”

For Myers, he was having to simultaneously master the three key ingredients of being a center — making the calls, snapping and blocking. And blocking is difficult enough without any other additional tasks, just ask a guard or a tackle.

The more Myers did it, however, the better and more comfortable he got. But none of this happened in a snap.

It was more like 600 snaps.

“I think towards the end he got consistent with snapping the ball, he was on target with those kinds of things and now he understands what he has to do,” Studrawa said. “He understands all the pressure of making the calls, setting the fronts so the more and more he went on, he got 600-and-some reps. That’s outstanding.”
