BARTON DOESN'T WAIT

Kirk Barton loved his time in Chicago, but when the Bears released him last week, he didn't have long to wait to find a new team. Miami signed Barton off waivers, meaning the Dolphins have to put Barton on their active roster.

There's a big difference in pay from active roster to practice squad.

That doesn't mean Barton didn't lose some money in the deal. Three days before Chicago cut him, Barton put a security deposit and paid rent for an apartment in Chicago.

"I think I slept there two nights," Barton said.

The Bears first game was in Indianapolis, and the team left the day after Barton set himself up in an apartment.

"The good thing is I didn't buy any furniture," he said. "I was sleeping like a boy scout in there."

The Bears liked Barton and did him a favor. Chicago didn't release him until after 3 p.m. Monday, which means the team had to pay him a full game check for the second week of the season.

NFL: Former Naples resident, Dolphins lineman Barton playing for late childhood friend

By ANDY KENT
7:51 p.m., Saturday, September 27, 2008

DAVIE ? Tears have flowed from the eyes of Kirk Barton only twice that he can remember.
It almost happened a third time as the former Naples resident sat in front of his locker inside the Miami Dolphins training facility last week and revisited the most recent occurrence.
It was two years ago Monday, and Barton, now 23, was in Columbus, Ohio, on the Ohio State University campus reveling in the top-ranked Buckeyes? win at Iowa the night before.
The junior right tackle received a phone call from his position coach, Jim Bollman, informing him that his best friend, Dan Reinertsen, had been killed in a motorcycle accident in East Naples.
Memories of their childhood growing up in Golden Gate and attending Golden Terrace Elementary together began to flood Barton?s mind. After all, it was Reinertsen who was drawn to the football field first with the Naples Gators, while Barton watched from the stands. The future All-Big Ten offensive lineman didn?t even try football until after he moved back to Ohio at the age of 12 following the death of his father, Kirk Sr., from cancer at a Miami hospital in 1997.

49ers put Spencer on IR, sign O-lineman

By Samuel Lam | October 16th, 2008

The 49ers signed T Kirk Barton and placed CB Shawntae Spencer on IR with an ACL injury. Barton was claimed from the Dolphins after being originally drafted from the Bears this past draft.
Barton is from Ohio State and will meet with the team in New York. T Jonas Jennings is not expected to play, so this will put Barton right into the depth chart. However, he isn?t expected to suit up for the game.
LB Manny Lawson is still nursing his hamstring but should be OK to go for this Sunday?s game.

Tackle Barton claimed

John Crumpacker, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, October 17, 2008

(10-16) 17:22 PDT -- A month after he sustained a season-ending knee injury, the 49ers put cornerback Shawntae Spencer on injured reserve and signed a player to take his place, but not his position, on the 53-man roster.
The 49ers claimed tackle Kirk Barton off waivers from Miami not because they had an immediate need for a backup at that position but because coach Mike Nolan and his staff worked with the former Ohio State player at the Senior Bowl and liked what they saw.
Barton, 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds, was a seventh-round draft pick of the Bears this year. He is expected to join his new team this weekend when the 49ers play the Giants at the Meadowlands.
"We were waiting until something came available that we were interested in," Nolan said after practice Thursday. "We didn't want to force the issue. We've been pretty healthy, knock on wood."

Barton lands with Bengals

By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Now with the fourth team of his rookie NFL season, Kirk Barton has strong advice for those who might follow in his footsteps.
"Don't sign a lease. Extended Stay Hotels are your friend."
Barton, an All-Big Ten offensive lineman at Ohio State, laughed. But it's his serious desire to play in the NFL that landed him with the Cincinnati Bengals on Thanksgiving night when they signed him off Miami's practice squad.
"I'm going someplace where I think I have a realistic chance at playing," said Barton, who doesn't expect to be active for a game Sunday against Baltimore. "Bottom line, you just want to play."
A seventh-round draft pick by Chicago, he made the team in training camp and played on special teams in the Bears' season opener.
Then Barton was cut two days later.
"In Chicago, I had just signed a six-month apartment lease the Friday before the opening game, and I was gone within a week," Barton said.
