His Coach asked him not to compete.

To me, that is case closed and every college coach should respect that. Practice starts next week...a tweaked ankle is nothing for the recruiting school but may cost the HS their season.

Me thinks it would be a good idea for Urban to tweak the date of FNL a bit next season.

I imagine it was moved back this year to maximize the time the coaches would get to invite kids to participate, but hopefully they can move it earlier in the year next season.

Picking a date that doesn't conflict with another major camp would be good as well (although as many have pointed out, having a large contingent of Buckeyes at said camp certainly helps).

Awkward situation...has to be done after elite camps to limit publicity and thin the herd.

Yet, closer to season and you see the HS coaches start worrying...however, if a rising senior prospect wants a tOSU offer, he WILL compete.

Thanks for the insight (again).

As others have said, FNL is about establishing the culture of competition as much an anything else. Once players and coaches realize what FNL is all about I think participation will increase. Right now it seems like a lot of people are not quite sure what to think about it.

To the topic of this thread, it seems like Trout will be competing for a spot in the class against quite a few out-of-state players with legitimate interest in the Buckeyes. Hopefully he isn't setting himself back by not competing this time around- even if it is completely understandable why he is sitting out.

While I'm sure that's most of the rationale, it's also a nice excuse to get the coaches to a game to see a kid... and his _teammates_ under real Friday Night Lights.

Interesting thoughts, I appreciate the concern. I'll try to clear up a few things real quick. (that means it'll be long)

FNL will always be this late, and the coaches are not concerned with other camps. They believe they can build the camp that everyone will want to get to at least the top athletes they want there. It's supposed to be close to the season so that there are very few camps and mostly just invited campers. (coaches asked players when they invited them not to spread the word)

As for Kyle - his HS coach called and said that Fickell wanted him to call. He also said he preferred that Kyle go to FNL but as a non-participant this year. He left it up to Kyle but he is going to honor coach Carpenters request. They are using him at tackle and guard some this year. They also are planning on using him both ways at defensive end. They have a lot riding on Kyle. He tweaked an ab muscle a couple weeks ago. Not enough to miss any camp or conditioning but did lay off lifting for a week. It's just a precaution to make sure he doesn't pull something.

The week after the senior advanced camp Kyle attended, coach Warriner told Kyle a few things: His pass protection is raw but don't worry about that they can teach it since we don't do much. He said he was very impressed with how quickly Kyle picked up what they told him during camp. He also said that he was one of the two best linemen they saw period during all their camp days and that they were "definitely going to offer" Kyle.

That being said they have not offered him, I assume it's because they have a bunch of 2014 line offers out there nationwide and if those guys commit elsewhere then Kyle's in line but I don't know. I also know they were very impressed with Nick Richardson so I assume he's the other in line who doesn't have one. Hopefully we find out a little more tomorrow night. He went against some 5 star kids last time so I'm not sure how much more he could improve on his last performance anyway.

When Kyle called Fickell back again to let him know he was going to attend but coach preferred he not participate in the drills Fickell said it didn't matter at all. They wanted Kyle on campus to visit with the coaches, take in the atmosphere and let both sides get to know each other better. I know not everyone will agree. I also know Kyle absolutely hates the recruiting process, had his coach and coach Fick not asked him to come he wouldn't be going. As of Monday night he was saying no way. Until this year I never understood why some kids didn't like being in the spotlight and in line for a big time DI offer, I'll just share that it's completely different on the other side. I've said too much so I'll stop, hopefully that brings you inside a little bit even if you disagree.

Nothing to gain from stretching the truth or flat out lying. This info is 100% accurate straight from the family. :)

(Well, I suppose Warriner might think differently than what he said, but I would have thought a simple "You did well, We're watching you this year" would have been better than a straight lie if that were the case... )

100% true. The process has become a relentless burden that will definitely be cut back soon.

The cutbacks will make things worse. Here's a classic problem:

Kyle needed to talk to a coach, so he called - went straight to voicemail. He tried again 15 minutes later, voicemail, then he waited half hour, voicemail then another half hour - eventually he got through. I don't remember the exacts, but he spent considerable time trying to get through. Now, one might say that the coach didn't want to talk to him, but in fact the coach was traveling through the mountains and didn't have a signal. He spent a considerable amount of time trying to reach the coach and you have to wonder, does the coach not want to talk to me? Then he gets ahold of the coach who spends ten minutes apologizing and explaining and everything is ok except a shot day and you spent time worrying that you were bothering the coach and wondering if you are out of line etc. (by the way, he had an offer from that coach so it wasn't like he isn't wanted but you still start to wonder)

I understand you don't want a hundred coaches calling a kid each day, and there needs to be limits. But by george if the kid could leave a message asking for a call back and THEN the coach could return one call that would make things so much easier. Make a call and wait, the problem is that rarely do kids get through on the first call during certain periods of heavy recruiting and they can't get called back. Their rules designed to help the kids actually make it harder on the kids. And they apply to parents, they can't call us back either.
