OL Matthew Jones (Official Thread)

Definitely a guy you just take and figure it out later, but I like him at DT. Needs to play lower but that athleticism and strength would be best served at DT, particularly considering our needs. Either way, LOVE where we are at with Matthew.

Man, big fella takes really nice angles to the ball and has really nice athleticism for his size. Has the tools,an offseason or two with our staff he could be a monster

Exactly what I saw (given that you're the expert here for sure). Do you like him at DT? I think he could be an athletic OT but think his future is on defense.

His footwork really makes him intriguing, but he really needs to work on leverage and knee bending at OL, he can though with next level coaching. Either way he is a really nice piece of clay waiting to be molded

I was just talking to my buddy who coached him and a number of the E Hall players. And he didnt seemed impressed at all with Matthew and was curious to why he was ranked so high. Thought that he couldn't dominate the weak PSAL league and was quite overrated.
I told him that in the end, I'd still trust Urban Meyer, but I respected his opinion. Especially since he stated that Curtis Samuel was going to be a star in the right system and that Jahsen Wint was one of the hardest working players he ever coached.

Could always be a past production vs. future potential kind of thing.

Remember when we passed on Taco Charlton for similar reasons / lack of space? He was drafted in the 1st this year.

True, but didnt Charlton go to a bigger school and play actually very good OH talent in conference? My buddy's gripe is that Jones flashes at times and then looks ordinary. Yet is playing guys who are sometimes 50+lbs less than him and getting handled.
But you could be right, and the staff may see a high ceiling for him

I think what pnuts is hinting at is there may be a motivation factor with the big guy. After he's been with Marotti and the others in the weight room his aggressiveness will either manifest itself or he'll need to find something else to do back in Brooklyn. I think Urban and LJ feel he's worth the risk.
