OL Nicholas Petit-Frere (1st Team All American, Tennessee Titans)

“I just try to play as hard as I can to help us win games,” Petit-Frere said. “That’s the end goal of it all. Whatever happens, happens. As long as we do our jobs, that’s [the message] Coach [Ryan] Day’s been telling us and our coaches.

“As long as we do our jobs and we play as hard as we can, everything will work out for everyone in the end.”

Reid Fragel breaks down Nicholas Petit-Frere

Nicholas Petit-Frere is finally at the right playing weight to be a superstar at tackle for the Buckeyes.

Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford have combined to allow just one quarterback pressure and no sacks through three games. And Petit-Frere is already living up to his five-star pedigree he boasted out of high school.

What is fueling the rise of Nicholas Petit-Frere for Ohio State? How impressive has the pass protection been for the Buckeyes as the aerial attack explodes? What can the former five-star recruit still improve as his junior season progresses? Former Ohio State right tackle Reid Fragel was back in the Lettermen Row film lab with senior writer Austin Ward to break down Petit-Frere and answer those questions in the latest episode of BuckIQ.

Roll the tape!

“What we've got to do is make him an elite run blocker,” Studrawa said. “Not just a good run blocker. I would say that's where he was. He's got to become elite, and that's what we're focusing on now.”

“Coming in as a freshman, this is probably one of the most competitive places I’ve ever seen or been a part of,” he said. “The competitive nature and the strive for excellence that every single player and coach, even our staff has, at trying to be the best at whatever they can do — that was the first thing that stuck out to me. Through that growth came the trials and tribulations of me trying to gain my weight and learn the offense, trying to feel comfortable with the team. It took time. It took time for me to find my groove, find my rhythm, find how comfortable I was. I felt like I got there a little during my sophomore year, and then you never know what you don’t know. When my junior year came up, then I got into a whole new level of feeling comfortable. I thought my sophomore year that this would be the most comfortable I would ever be. I feel great.

“But one more year comes around and I feel more tight with the team. I feel more tight with what I’m doing in everything of that nature.”
.
.
.
As a starter last season, Petit-Frere and Munford made up one of the best tackle tandems in the country. And they’re both back for another season of dominance.

“They were two of the best tackles in the country last year,” Ohio State offensive line coach Greg Studrawa said. “They proved it. They’re growing. They can help those guys inside. And to have two guys on the edge like those two guys that can protect those young quarterbacks, that was really what I thought was going to be the best for us.”

“Obviously, the main goal is for me to improve on what I did from the season before. I’m not going to just forget about what I’ve done. I’m going to make sure that what I’ve done is to try to improve on the things that I’ve done and not just to stay the same but to be even better, so that’s the main goal,” he said.

“But my whole mentality is really about just do what I’ve been doing. Work hard, train hard, eat right. Practice hard. Play with a lot of effort. Do all the things that got me to that point to begin with. Nothing should change just because ‘Oh, I played a year.’ Or ‘Oh, I’ve been here before.’ No, the same mentality, the same drive, the same work ethic, it has to stay the same. But I have to improve while doing that.”

Look: Ohio State's Nicholas Petit-Frere shows off body transformation, credits Mickey Marotti

Mickey Marotti has a knack for transforming players' bodies. The Ohio State strength and conditioning coach has a long history of taking scrawny freshmen straight out of their high school weight room and turning them into NFL specimens in a few years' time.

The players Marotti has helped transform are too many to name, but there's a good chance if he came through the door at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and left as an NFL prospect, Marotti had plenty to do with it. Whether it be in his famed winter workouts, the conditioning the players do in the summer or the various lifts throughout the season, Marotti knows how to turn a high school boy into a man ready for the NFL.

And Marotti strikes again. This time, it's with offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere. The Tampa, Florida native posted a photo on his Twitter page on Wednesday of himself shirtless in June of 2018 then January of 2019 and finally July of 2020. The transformation is remarkable.
