OL Reid Fragel (Official Thread)

On the line: The battle is over for now, and Reid Fragel will be on the field for the first snap at right tackle.

But at some point, Taylor Decker is still likely going to see some action. And the Buckeyes aren't done evaluating the two players just because training camp is over.

"We think both can be really good players for us," offensive line coach Ed Warinner said. "Reid is just a little bit ahead, so he'll get the nod for this Saturday as the starter. Anticipate Taylor being in the game, playing, contributing -- he would be the first guy in the game at either right tackle or left tackle. He works both sides, so he's our swing guy and our third tackle right now.

"Still a very close race there. There isn't a lot of separation there, it's just Reid is older and a little more veteran, little more ready to go."

OSU senior right tackle Reid Fragel blocks a pass rush during the Buckeyes? April 21 Spring Game. The Scarlet team defeated the Gray team, 20-14.

For now, senior Reid Fragel has an edge over freshman Taylor Decker in the fight for Ohio State football?s right tackle position, but the battle isn?t over yet.

OSU released its depth chart for Saturday?s season-opening game against Miami (Ohio) on Monday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

While Fragel won the job, Decker will still might see time at the right and left tackle positions for OSU as the first man off the bench at tackle.

Co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Ed Warinner also said that the starting spot remains a ?fluid situation? and he will continue to monitor both players? performance in the days and weeks to come.

Should either Fragel or Decker play well and the other not, Warinner said, the players might flip spots on the depth chart at right tackle.

If only for the Buckeyes? season opener against the RedHawks, Fragel has proved himself worthy of starting.

?We?ve had a great battle at the right tackle position all during training camp,? Warinner said Monday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. ?Reid Fragel, Taylor Decker ? they are, we think, both going to be really good players for us. Reid is just a little bit ahead, and so he?ll get the nod this Saturday as the starter.?

In the end, Fragel?s experience helped separate him from Decker in a tight competition, Warinner said.

?Very close race there in terms of there isn?t a lot of separation there,? Warinner said. ?Reid?s just older and a little more veteran and just a little more ready to go.?

Fragel, formerly a pro-style tight end, volunteered to change positions after first-year coach Urban Meyer was hired for OSU?s coaching job in November, but wound up in a battle with Decker, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound first-year player from Vandalia, Ohio.

Successful switch: Former tight end Reid Fragel settles in at right tackle for Ohio State

Reid Fragel was a tight end in his first three seasons with the Ohio State football team, so it should come as no surprise that his transition to right tackle in his senior season has been a challenge.

Fragel said he finally felt comfortable, however, in the Buckeyes? fourth game of the season, a 29-15 victory against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Saturday.

?I think so far that?s the best I?ve played at tackle,? Fragel said.

This week, however, Fragel prepares for what could be a much greater challenge, as the Buckeyes travel to East Lansing, Mich., to play the No. 20 Michigan State Spartans in their Big Ten opener at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Against the Spartans, Fragel will be lining up primarily against Spartans defensive end William Gholston, who was an All-Big Ten second-team selection in 2011.

?He?s got length,? Fragel said of Gholston. ?I think that?s his main weapon, he likes to use his hands a lot and uses his reach. He?s quick off the ball, he?s got size, too, so it?ll be a good challenge for us.?

The MSU game will be a homecoming for Fragel as well. For the first time in his OSU career, Fragel will have the opportunity to play in East Lansing, Mich., which is located less than 100 miles from Fragel?s home town of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.

?That?s a game I?ve been looking forward to for a while,? Fragel said. ?Obviously that?s my home state, so (I?ve) got some friends and family up there that will be at the game.?

Kid is coming along nicely. Big game on Saturday.

Gholston is prone to the personal foul so hopefully Reid can frustrate him early and often and get his head out of the game. A couple mistakes by him and Braxton could find some real opportunities to gash them.

This is THE big match up along the line. Big game indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing how Reid does with this challenge. Take Gholston out of the game and it increases our chances significantly for a victory.

Ohio State tackle Reid Fragel's position switch pays off

Reid Fragel might be the perfect example of someone living a life surrounded by the idea of "what could have been."

Fragel, a senior right tackle, will join his Ohio State teammates Saturday when they head to Michigan State to open Big Ten play. But not only could the former Grosse Pointe South star have just as easily been wearing green and white, he also could be in a completely different position on the field.

First things first: Fragel was highly recruited coming out of high school and his final decision came down to Michigan State or Ohio State.

"Just seeing the campus and attending a football game, I was kind of blown away," Fragel said. "It was difficult for me to not want to attend this university."

Reid Fragel's play on line stands out for Ohio State

@JKBuckeyes

COLUMBUS — Corey Linsley was in awe.

Taking in a Sunday film session with his Ohio State teammates, Linsley couldn’t help but to notice the road-grader with No. 77 emblazed across his scarlet-and-gray jersey.

There weren’t a ton of highlights from the Buckeyes’ 29-14 win over UAB, but the player wearing 77 — right tackle Reid Fragel — was one of them, and Linsley wasn’t the only one to notice.

“He was driving guys out of there,” Linsley said. “The (UAB) guy is 10 yards down the field and Reid is pancaking him.

“It was basically the Reid Fragel highlight show.”

It was, in Coach Urban Meyer’s mind, Fragel’s best game of the season.

“Really,” Meyer specified, “the best game of his career.”

What good timing for the Buckeyes.

Fragel’s best game, perhaps a sign that he is finally feeling at home at right tackle after three years as a tight end at Ohio State, comes a week before the Buckeyes’ biggest test of the year against arguably the best defensive end they will face this season.

Fragel is likely to be matched up against Michigan State defensive end William Gholston for much of Saturday’s game.

It’s a showdown Fragel might not have been ready for a few months ago when he officially moved to the offensive line, but one he is ready for now.

“This is a game I’ve had circled for a while on my schedule,” said Fragel, a native of Grosse Point, Mich.

Ohio State right tackle Reid Fragel credits his family ? especially his two brothers ? for helping him get to where he is today

?Outside of sports they taught me a lot about life things, like what to do, what not to do. I learned a lot from them, definitely.? ? Reid Fragel, on the impact his brothers, Brett and Mark, have had on his life

The Columbus Dispatch Friday September 28, 2012

In the middle of the night about seven years ago, 14-year-old Reid Fragel spent some quality time with his 20-year-old brother, Brett.

Reid?s two big brothers ? including Mark, the oldest ? had long been a guiding influence in his life as they grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. So it continued after his brothers left home ? especially with Brett, even though he was 650 miles away at Monmouth College in New Jersey, where he played basketball.

Reid and Brett stayed in touch via the Internet. They wore headphones and played the sport of the evening, be it football, soccer or hockey.

?One of the greatest things ever: Xbox Live,? Brett said. ?We were playing against each other, talking, having a great time. It was basically like being his older brother without being there sitting next to him. We did that I don?t know how many times, but it was a great way to stay connected.?

Fanfreakingtastic day today Reid!!! The only noise Gholston made today was when his teammate knocked him out. Really turning into an excellent tackle and might just be able to earn himself a paycheck down the road if he keeps his improvement on this scale. :osu:
