OL Reid Fragel (Official Thread)

It all falls in line for Fragel
Senior evolved into a big-time run blocker quickly after a disastrous spring
Updated: November 19, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Reid Fragel didn't totally start from scratch.

The Ohio State senior spent the first three years of his college career at tight end, but he at least had some previous experience as a lineman.

Granted, it wasn't his choice to make the move during his senior year in high school. He broke his thumb in the last practice before the first game of that season, and the massive protective club that he had to wear on his left hand forced him to find somewhere else to line up.

And the level of competition wasn't even close to what he would eventually find in the Big Ten.

While Fragel was able to survive the quick transition thanks to his massive size and raw athleticism at Grosse Pointe (Mich.) South, when he tried to find a way contribute more consistently for the Buckeyes three years later and made the same move inside to the line, the second go-around didn't go quite as smoothly -- even with two healthy hands at his disposal this time.

"We want to show him a little bit of spring practice film, because he wasn't going to be our right tackle," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said. "He just wasn't -- and the problem was we didn't have any other choices other than a true freshman. In my own mind, I kind of made the decision he wasn't going to be playing right tackle for us.

"Now I think he's played 11 games on an offense that's ranked ninth in the country in rushing offense. [In the spring] I would have argued -- I would have said that can't happen."

The end is coming for Reid Fragel, much faster than he or anyone else would like.

The former Grosse Pointe South star and current Ohio State Buckeye will stand on the Ohio Stadium field before the game Saturday and try to soak in the past four years.

But while he always knew his final game against Michigan would be memorable, he could not have imagined how different his circumstances would be entering Saturday.

Long a tight end, Fragel will be playing offensive tackle. His final college game will be in chilly Columbus in the regular season instead of tropical Miami, site of the BCS championship game. And he'll be playing for a coach he never dreamed would be there when he signed that letter-of-intent for a different man he cared about passionately.

But that's college football. Fragel's happy he's healthy and ready to make sure the Wolverines realize he plans to end his career with a 12-0 senior season.

"Being on the field one last time, the senior stuff and looking in the stands and seeing my parents up there," Fragel said this week. "And being on the field against Michigan will be a special moment. Hopefully we can celebrate afterwards."

Outstanding season for Reid. I hope this season has made him some money in the pro's.

Who do you guys think fills the gap next season? The core group returns, and it's always tough to figure out the o-line. Does Decker move to LT and Mewhort go to RT? Dodson? Just curious what the board thinks of this.

Will be interesting to see if Hall or Norwell decides to move on....doesn't seem advisable, but there has been some chatter.

I would think Mewhort stays at LT after a solid season and Decker slides in at RT. The only thing that changes that is if Chase Farris just needs to be on the field b/c he is that good...Wariner made a comment about him being the most athletic OL on the team and the kid is huge. If Farris sees the field, maybe Mewhort moves back inside and replaces Hall or Norwell if one of them leaves.

Dodson is still probably a ways off, especially sitting most of the year out with an injury.

I think Decker probably slides right in at RT...

The only way I could see it differently is if Chase Farris is too good to keep off the field and he goes to LG and Norwell moves out to RT....

Or, if Evan Lisle comes right in and is better than Decker, but that's not likely..
