So off the top of my head, he is the third true freshman I can recall that had to make an emergency appearance in The Game.

James Laurinaitis cam in for Bobby Carpenter after one play in 2005
Pat Elflein had to come in for Marcus "double eagle" Hall

now we have Munford coming in and not being overwhlmed

I'm sure there are others but that's good company imo.

Thayer Munford Looking to Step in as Starter, Leader

When Ohio State left guard Michael Jordan worked his way into the starting lineup as a true freshman in 2016, he did it in part by enrolling early and going through spring football. It also didn’t hurt that the Buckeyes had an opening at the position.

When offensive tackle Thayer Munford enrolled at Ohio State last summer, the Buckeyes didn’t have an opening at tackle, so enrolling even earlier wasn’t going to help him beat out Jamarco Jones or Isaiah Prince.

Even though the Buckeyes didn’t need Munford to step up into a starting role, he didn’t take things easy upon his arrival. In fact, he eventually worked his way into the two-deep as Prince’s backup. Munford’s arrival and proof that he was a quick study allowed OSU to move Branden Bowen from tackle to guard, where he would eventually win the open job at right guard.

Munford never started a game as a freshman, but his first go-round as a Buckeye was extremely productive.

“I’m very proud,” he said of his rookie season. “It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime chance for an offensive lineman. Everything comes so fast, you’ve got to get everything down, get everything situated. School is no joke.”

Soon after the freshmen arrived last summer, Urban Meyer was already speaking highly of Munford before camp even began, so it was no surprise to see him ascend into the two-deep. Throughout the season, Munford only continued his impressive play and work ethic.

“He goes,” Jones said after the 2017 season. “He’s a big dude, he’s athletic, he’s smart, he picked up the offense, and he just goes every day in practice. It’s hard as offensive linemen to come in and pick up the offense and go into games and executing at a high level. But when his number has been called this year he’s done it. And in practice as well. He’s grown a lot.”

While Ohio State’s coaches expect Thayer Munford to be the Buckeyes’ starting right tackle this season, Munford isn’t acting like he’s won the job yet.

Munford, the final member of Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class, wasn’t expected – at least not by most analysts outside the program – to be among the players who would be major contributors for the Buckeyes by their sophomore seasons. Yet in less than a year since his arrival on campus, Munford has already defied those expectations, seeing playing time as the backup right tackle as a true freshman.

Now, Munford is positioned as the top candidate this spring to take over the starting job at right tackle, with Isaiah Prince making the move across the line to play left tackle.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said on the first day of spring practice that Munford is penciled in as a starter for the Buckeyes, as a result of how well Munford has performed both on the field in practice and in the weight room since his arrival in Columbus last summer.

Munford says he believed when he committed to Ohio State in February 2017 that he would have the opportunity to see the field quickly as a Buckeye. But he knew that he would have to "go get it," as a starting spot wouldn’t be handed to him, so that’s what he’s tried to do.

"Really, I just came in just like everyone else, just like a freshman coming in, don’t know what to do yet, still trying to learn and stuff," Munford said while meeting with the media on Wednesday. "But after that, it was just like, 'Ok. Now I just need to go ball during camp, make sure the coaches see me on film.'"

I think he also has a little attitude about basically being a forgotten member of his recruiting class as well. He has a hunger that will keep him fighting throughout his career
