Oregon Ducks (aka U of Nike)

But, as the saying goes, "If you don't like it, stop us." Ohio State certainly did, and I wouldn't bet that this gimmicky system will ever find its way to be national champions.

Certainly less likely as the playoff field expands, they're less likely to run across a dog with fleas... had the FSU vs. Oregon Scenario happened in the final (without the playoff, and it was only one Bama misstep away) they'd have got one, but, they need to run through 2 top level opponents now. Makes it harder for everyone but harder if you're part smoke and mirrors.

Hard to know if/when Oregon will win a Natty, but they are a really good football school these days. It's a shame to put down the team we beat in the Championship, because I felt we earned our Natty by beating two really good schools. The fan-pride I felt by beating Alabama, and then the change-up of Oregon was pretty awesome because they were both worthy opponents.

Certainly not disagreeing with this. It absolutely is their system. They benefit from that playstyle and they shouldn't apologize for it.

But if you think about it, most teams' successes have been in part due to a system. I'd say that Oregon has benefited from it more than most. I'd also include Mike Leach's Texas Tech teams from a few years ago. But it sounds like people are marginalizing teams' successes when they label it as due to a system. Ohio State has a system, and it is run very well by its current players. I can't speak as to whether it is run that way because that's the players Ohio State has, or if Ohio State has those players because of the system. Ohio State's system tries to take advantage of individual mismatches by spreading the defense out. Other teams might try to take advantage of overall team mismatches by grouping the defense together and trying to run right over the defense.

Oregon's system just happens to be that they're trying to take advantage of the defense not being ready for the snap. I think this takes away from "Our team is better than your team" or even "Our wide receiver was able to consistently beat your defender" and makes it more "Your defense wasn't quick enough to be ready for the next play". I think it's less traditional football, and more exploitative than football should be. But, as the saying goes, "If you don't like it, stop us." Ohio State certainly did, and I wouldn't bet that this gimmicky system will ever find its way to be national champions.

Sock says it's the system. We need to stop smoking all this amazing weed in the great northwest and focus on producing skrong football players.

Mariota was arguably the best player in program history, and their talent level was as high as it's ever been this past season, and they still couldn't get it done. If Mariota couldn't get them over the hump, I have a hard time seeing them ever do it.
Yep. I think it was in a PM where I read it, but someone mentioned before the title game that they were on an Oregon chat board and they were worried shitless that this was going to be their last real chance at a national title in a long, long time, since they were expecting (correctly) that Mariota would bolt.

I don't know that it's so much putting them down. Oregon has had the same deficiencies when they have faced elite defenses for years now. Match their speed and handle their tempo and you can overpower them.

Oregon's best shot at winning the whole thing is for some crazy scenario like 2007 happening again where the top teams just keep losing and they get matched up with other teams that lack the general toughness most top teams do. Could happen, but as long as schools like tOSU, Bammer, and a few others keep recruiting at the level they are, Nike U is always going to be at a fundamental disadvantage. The blue print to beating them is well known. It just takes a team with the talent and coaching acumen to pull it off.

And no, FSU this year does not count. That team had an average defense and was a pot of (relative) mediocrity waiting to boil over.

I don't know that we're really "putting them down", necessarily. Just pointing out that there are flaws that can be, and were exploited. Their W-L record over the last five years shows that not a lot of teams have been able to do it. But the ones that are built to do so have had success.

I will say, I felt a lot better beating bammer in a vacuum. I thought going in we could handle Nike and their goofy, gimmicky offense. And their D didn't worry me at all. Bammer had me much more concerned. Of course the bammer result may have significantly influenced my feelings going into the NC game.

I think the key to beating the ducks is handling the tempo(tm). FSU's defense never could adjust and was caught out of position over and over, especially after the turnovers. OSU otoh was able to adjust after the first drive and at that point the superior athletes took over. I think it was on the oregon 247 board before the game some of their fans were downplaying osu's starting d practicing vs both the first and second string offense to simulate how quickly they needed to get lined up. But considering the results of the game I'd say it worked pretty well.

I'm pretty sure they'll continue to be in the playoff hunt for the foreseeable future, as long as they run that goofy system and have the Nike machine backing them. But, when they run into teams in January that are on the same plane talent-wise, and have the ability to punch them in the mouth, I fully expect them to continue falling short. Herbie and the e!spn hype machine can continue to lament them being called "soft", but the fact is, when they run into a big boy team capable of smacking them in the mouth, they almost always falter.
I wouldn't be surprised if they became perennial 2 loss team. They play some good ooc teams on their schedule (Msu Nebraska buckeyes) which could all potentially beat them. I'm not going to say USC is back but they seem to be recruiting like it and frankly have the most to sell recruits overall. I think Stanford's day in the sun is over so they should always play in the PAC title game. That will be another potential loss to the best of the better half of the conference. Add ucla zona asu with USC off sanctions and I see Oregon loosing 2 in a good year. They will get better match ups in bowl games and blow them out but I can't see them making the playoffs more than once or twice a decade. Eventually recruiting will fall off if they are outside the top 10 for a few years. PAC 12 is only getting better while they seem to have hit their peak. They could get close again next year but after that I think they will roll down hill.

Oregon was a perennial basement dweller in the PAC for most of their existence until they went to the spread option. They had a good season every decade or so, but nothing like the run they've put together recently. 7 consecutive 10 win seasons. 6 consecutive bcs/formerly bcs games. Imagine Northwestern doing that. Whether you like it or not, their system is working, they just can't quite get over the hump and recruit like the blue blood programs.

All the talk about them being soft... that's just another meaningless media term that they use to dumb things down for the average Joe. Its about as accurate as moxie, playing in space etc.

Following Oregon transfer, Vernon Adams can't train at EWU facilities

EWU's coach is a little salty about losing his QB who has been runner-up for FCS player of the year the last two seasons. Couple of his quotes:

"I want what's best – when I had a conversation with [Oregon coach Mark] Helfrich and I told him this. At the end of this – I disagree with a lot of parts of this,"

"We're not rolling out the red carpet around here for a guy that's playing against us game one. So he's got to figure out where he's going to work out and that stuff."

"When you're Oregon and over the last three or four years you're you're not recruiting a number of guys that can fill in for when Marcus leaves, I'm kind of asking the question – I'm flattered I guess – but what are we doing over there? I don't think Urban Meyer is going over to Northern Iowa for his next guy."

What a douche. If he really wants what's best for the player, he'd be happy the kid is getting the opportunity to start at QB for the national runner-up. The level of exposure this kid is gonna get at Oregon isn't really comparable to him staying at BumFuck U.

I don't see a problem with the coach not letting him use their facilities. He shouldn't be helping a future opponent. But the rest sounds like a bunch of crybaby bullshit. ..

:tibor:

Waaaaaaah, a young man is getting a tremendous opportunity, waaaaaaah

It's not like losing to Oregon will affect the 1AA team's season.
