1) The entire story is symbolic
1.2) As with most Bible stories, they were created to help people deal with either their origin, how to live, or their mortality. There is no basis in facts. Even if it were factual, the days obviously had to be symbolic since man has only been on Earth a short while in comparison to the start of Earth and even many other beings.
2) As mentioned, Earth is around 4.5 billion years old. Life is approx 3 to 4 billion years old.
2.1) Scientific research
3) Yes
3.1) Theory of Evolution, shared characteristics, etc.
4) No
4.1) Once again, it was a Bible story used to help people try and understand their beginnings (it also deals with human nature and mortality, common themes the stories in the Bible deal with). People desire answers to all these questions, especially from religion. Out of that sheer desire for answers, many religions have provided answers. Pretty tough to keep a religion going if you don't provide answers to those questions. So the origin stories were created.

1.)In the Bible, the first book, Genesis, we read of God creating the earth in 6 days. (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1&version=NIV) Link is for reference, did a google search.
If you are familiar with this passage, how long do you think the days were? Is it literal, symbolic etc?

I find it symbolic.

1.2)Why do you come to that conclusion?
A "day" on earth is not a "day" on other planets. In fact, I think that the first part of this cant' help but be symbolic as he "created light". If he created the "heavens" then he created the sun, which provides light.

2.)How old is the Earth/life?
Scientific inquiry stats that it is over 4.5 billions years old.

2.1)Why/how do you come to that conclusion?
Scientific inquriy, measurement.

3.) Do you believe humans and apes share a common ancestor?
Yes, probably.

3.1) Why? Why not?
DNA research, evolution

4.) Do you believe the biblical characters Adam and Eve actually existed?
Yes, but not in the way that is shown.

4.1) Why? Why not?
I don't believe it's possible for an entire species to descend from 1 pair of its kind. For the results of inbreeding - look to the inhabitants of Kentucky and West Virginia ()

Because this is Buckeye Planet. That's what we do. Bluff's been here long enough that he knew it when he started the thread. You, though... :shake:

Yes, but as has been pointed out, we have plenty of other threads for those discussions and debates. Why can't there be a separate thread where people can simply respond to his questions and if they want to debate each other, PM or take it to another thread?

Seems reasonable for us to behave as such...and I say this as both an individual poster and a moderator.

1) Symbolic. Every society and culture on the planet has its own creation myth and Genesis is no more valid than any of the other ones.
1.2) Complete lack of evidence, inconsistencies within Genesis, order of events does not match real order.

3) Of course.
3.1) Overwhelming evidence from multiple sources such as fossils, genetics and various dating techniques.

4) No.
4.1) Genesis is a parable. Fossil and genetic evidence contradict the Biblical story that all human kind descended from just two individuals.

1.)In the Bible, the first book, Genesis, we read of God creating the earth in 6 days. . ., how long do you think the days were? Is it literal, symbolic etc?
It is a literal day in Kairos time. But God's time is not our time. In Psalm 90:4, Moses prayed, "For a thousand years in your sight are like a day just gone by."
I believe "Day" Yom is the word God gave Moses to describe the sequence and order of original design and creation.
I struggle when I attempt to make kairos time fit into my experience of chronos.

1.2)Why do you come to that conclusion?
Study of the original Biblical languages, microbiology, geology classes in college, extended reading of evolution, intelligent design theory and alignment with scientific data.

2.)How old is the Earth/life?
Younger than the universe/younger than the earth.
Both are probably older than we tend to think.

2.1) Why/how do you come to that conclusion?
Genesis 1, Psalm 90:4.

3.) Do you believe humans and apes share a common ancestor?
I don't think so.

3.1) Why? Why not?
Micro-evolution fits into my understanding of the development of species, but there seems to be too many questions/problems when macro is posited as a believable theory.
I believe genus and possibly species are products of unique ancestries.

4.) Do you believe the biblical characters Adam and Eve actually existed?
Yes.

4.1) Why? Why not?
Adam in Hebrew means "man", "Eve" was called that by man because she was the mother of all the living.
There seems to be some compelling evidence in the scientific community and in DNA studies to point to one common and unique genetic supplier.

Thanks for inquiring and I hope you do well on your project.

Thanks again, everyone.

Feel free to keep em' coming, this is all very helpful.

Just a sidenote, for the "why" questions, I'm looking for a pretty generic answer. I appreciate and will use the detailed answers, but it is ok if you put "thats what I've been taught" or "Because I believe the Bible" etc etc.

But seriously, thanks for all of the replies and good conversation. Experiences like this are why BP is getting a portion of my tax return
