OSU better off (in the long run) after Tatgate?

Cornerback6

Optimism Lover
SUPER SLOW DAY AT WORK...so sorry if this feels like beating a dead horse but didn't see this as its own thread anywhere.

So, with Urban at the helm, an incredibly bright near-future, a 12-0 season just passed & recruiting looking insanely positive...did we benefit in the long haul?

Don't get me wrong...I loved JT to the core and even though he was fairly conservative at times (I blame the Walrus first), I often wonder (even with the bowl ban and forfeited ARK win) if we "won" in the end?

My apologies if this is an ad nauseum debate, but was hoping to generate some quality, intelligent debate on a heavily dull day at the office. CHEERS.

It would appear so wouldn't it? I will guess that it will end up being better than JT's run but as it stands right now No we aren't better off in my opinion because we lost our Sugar Bowl victory (at least in the record books), lost scholarships, lost a loaded team for 2011 with Pryor and a potential NC appearance, lost to Michigan because of the suspended players, and more importantly lost JT who was 9-1 against scUM.

Right now in order to be on PAR (think about that for a second) with Tressels' teams Meyer will have to win 1 national championship, go 9-1 against scUM, and win 7 big ten titles in ten years.

However, if there is a guy who can do it it's Meyer. We're recruiting better (lets see how these guys pan out though), we've already got an undefeated season (tressel had 1), and Urban knows how to win the NC games. The odds though of going 9-1 against scUM though is going to be tough because lets face it they're recruiting much better and playing more well rounded then they ever have under dick rod or carr through the 2000's.

For now I will say no we are not better off but I'd say the odds are looking very good that we can continue on where Tressel left off.

"Better off"? I don't see how getting your name dragged through the muck of ESPiN and countless rags is "better off". Not even to mention losing one of the great all time college coaches.
No! Not "better off"!

2001-10 = 106-22, 66-14 in the B1G, 8 B1G Titles (including 6 straight), 9-1 vs. scUM, Heisman Winner, 3 NC Berths (1 Win), 6 Bowl Wins, 5-3 in BCS...

It's gonna be really hard to top that run. REALLY hard. Yes, tatgate scarred it, but it was a tremendous ten years. As such, I have a hard time saying we're "better off". But I have an equally difficult time saying we're not at the beginning of another tremendous run. Just enjoy the ride.

We are in great hands with Urban. He is going to be extremely successful at tOSU, no doubt about it. He has done a fantastic job and has established a discipline regarding behavior that was badly needed. He is really a no nonsense guy now and has sent numerous players packing. Something Tress would very rarely do. But that's what made Tress Tress and was eventually his downfall, i.e. his loyalty to the players.

I wouldn't want any other coach at tOSU other than Urban. With one exception.....JT.

There's an argument to be made that things were stagnating a bit at the end. It wasn't just the suspensions. There were a lot of busts, washouts and transfers from the 09-11 classes that fueled the flawed 2011 & 2012 squads.

Better off?? I doubt we'll be able to tell until Urban has retired or moved on....

But as Jwins said, things were a bit stale at the end - and there were persistent rumors that JT was done after 2013 anyway for retirement.

My question is this - why worry about comparing? Let the retards in the media worry about that - let's just enjoy what appears to be a potential dynasty in the making.

THE WORST: TATGATE WAS STUPID WHEN IT HAPPENED AND HAS ONLY GOTTEN MORE ABSURD OVER TIME

114554_h.jpg

Jim Tressel deserved to be fired. By the conditions of his contract.

By every other standard (moral, logical, etc.) Jim Tressel should have a statue in front of Ohio Stadium because his "misdeeds" amount to approximately a third of a hill of beans, especially in comparison to... well, literally almost every other college football scandal that followed afterwards.

And that's what this week's The Worst is about. I'm not particularly interested in rehashing every single element of Tatgate, in part because I had the displeasure of having to do it in real time as it was happening:

I want to make clear that these are extremely serious allegations that cannot be dismissed as minor. Not reporting a known rules violation to the NCAA and/or his superiors is a huge violation itself, a lie by omission, and also a specific violation of Tressel's contract with Ohio State. [...] If true, what Tressel is now accused of could very well end his coaching career

Oh cool, I was right. Great.

At the time I was convinced that this was the college football version of Ragnarok. The world was ending, the sun was going out, waters rising and covering the earth... you know, standard apocalyptic crap.

And of course, in the end, Jim Tressel did get fired. Nominally for lying to the NCAA but in actuality for rigging a raffle in the 1980's and also not caring that his players were getting discounts (discounts!) on tattoos via selling their own property. The bastards! MGoBlog breathlessly recounted all of Tressel's sins if you're really interested in walking down an extremely dumb memory lane, but let's get right to the point.

Around the same time that Terrelle Pryor and company were using their own property like any other person might, Bobby Petrino was busy hiring his mistress to a university position and misleading authorities about a motorcycle crash. A few years after Tressel was sent packing at Ohio State for lying about something no one should ever care about, Hugh Freeze decided to use his Ole Miss-issued phone to call escort services.

Art Briles and Baylor mishandled sexual assault claims, seemingly allowing the football program to take precedence over the safety of women. Videographer Declan Sullivan's death might've been prevented had Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly brought practice indoors. Instead, the Irish practiced outside on a day with gale force winds, which would then knock over Sullivan's video tower, killing him. Joe Paterno allowed a child rapist to abuse with impunity right under his nose for years at Penn State.

Even Ohio State isn't without its own, much more devastating issues: the university just last month paid more than 40 million dollars to settle 12 lawsuits involving Richard Strauss, which echoes Michigan State's handling of Larry Nassar's abuses. And on and on and on.
.
.
.
So ultimately, Tatgate is The Worst not just because it's stupid and absurd that Ohio State players and coaches would face literally any punishment for selling their own property and then fibbing about knowing about it.

No, it's The Worst because all of the real abuses of power, the ones that broke lives, continue unabated as the sports world at large can't stop itself from lumping "scandal" in with "injustice." And if we want the latter to end, we need to stop conflating the two and learn to take action before people get hurt.

This is a very good article, it was posted here since the "tatgate" thread was closed.

Absolutely much better off. Tressel would’ve stuck around for another say 5 years and Urban wouldn’t have came home. I’m still stunned at the ratio of JT’s recruits flopping. Eventually to his peril. Who’s to say he couldn’t have built up another title contender but after he would’ve retired OSU probably doesn’t get a Ryan Day caliber guy taking the reign.

Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch caught up with some of the Tat 5 and would you believe it, Mike Adams thinks the NCAA is trash.

“It was so stressful,” Adams said. “It was terrible, being young adults and the way they treated us and the (expletive) that they put us through interrogations every day for weeks and weeks via phone or in a room. Treating us like we have literally (committed) some type of felony or crazy crime, (like we’d) just killed someone.

“They’re the judge, jury and executioner. I think it’s bull. I think the NCAA really needs a whole overhaul, top to bottom. I just think it’s an outdated system designed to take advantage of these kids and capitalize off of them every chance they can.”

Adams, among others, also expressed support for a relaxing of NCAA rules that would finally permit college athletes to profit from their own name, image and likeness, offering that he could've made upwards of $5,000 a week and someone like Pryor could've raked in millions.

As they say, timing is everything.
