Had some time to kill and I've been thinking about this one for a while.

1970's
record: 91-20-3
win pct: 81.1 %
total score: 3,405-1,317
avg score: 30-12
AP top 5 finishes: 5

Played on the field in the Bowl game for a NC '70, '75, '79
record: 0-3

Plus the 1973 team was arguably the finest OSU team ever assembled. They went 10-0-1 but did not win the NC.

2000's (through 2007)
record: 81-20
win pct: 80.2%
total score: 2,915-1,612
avg score: 29-16
AP top 5 finishes: 5

Played on the field in the Bowl game for a NC in '02, '06, '07
record: 1-2

There are 26 games left to be played this decade. If JT continues to win at his 82% clip that would be a record of 11-2 each of the next two years making the final decade talley 103-24. That would EXACTLY match the 70's decade win pct at 81.1 %.

For sake of argument, say they go 13-0 in '08 and wrap up the second NC of the decade in four attempts. That means they could have 4 losses in '09 and still match the 70's win %. Anything better than that sets a new record.

Even if they don't bring home a NC again this decade when its all said and done the arguments could be made depending on how these last two years turn out. They would have to be shockingly bad to keep the debate from being made.

If there was ever any doubt, this is just another reminder that these are great times to be a Buckeye. When its all said and done these could quite possibly have been the very best times.

I agree. These are truly salad days for the Ohio State football program. You can underscore that point with all the anti-Ohio State sentiment from the rest of the country. That just reinforces that that Ohio State is one of the most visible and most relevant programs in the country.

Given that resume, you think Tressel realized the road trip to UCLA in 2001 was the only time he'd ever visit the Rose Bowl? :p

Good stuff, Jax.

Also, the '74 team would have won the NC if they had defeated SC in the '75 Rose Bowl. It wasn't cut and dried at game time, but after Alabama lost the Orange Bowl later that night, SC was voted UPI (Coaches poll) #1. If tOSU had won the Rose Bowl, they would have clearly been UPI #1 that year.

I would almost have to give it to the 2000's decade team because they have played the supposedly toughest other team in the country in their bowl games and are 1-2. Where the 1970's team had a 0-3 record in the bowl games and all of those bowl games were not against the other "best team" in the country. IMO

Another interesting comparison would be Big Ten championships and record against Michigan during the two decades. But, I agree, it's looking like the two decades are going to be neck and neck for the best ever.

I would agree with this.

All 3 games in the 70's were against the Pac 10 champ in the RB not the BCS #2 as we have today. Sometimes that meant USC and that was as tough as they come but sometimes it meant teams like Stanford and UCLA which should have been solid victories.

'70 and '75 were massive upsets, one by a UCLA team we had hammered in LA earlier in the year. '79 was a #1 vs #2 matchup iirc.

One thing in the defense of the 70's is that we have had no in conference competition like the scUM program of the '70's.

Teams with best B10 win % by decade
'20-'29: scUM .688
'30-'39: OSU .745
'40-'49: scUM .819
'50-'59: OSU .724
'60-'69: OSU .780
'70-'79: OSU/scUM tie at .880 !!
'80-'89: scUM .821
'90-'99: scUM .775

Pretty clear where all the Big 2 and little 8 talk comes from, especially in the '70's.

Currently (00-07) OSU and scUM are once again tied at a .781 win % in B10 play for the decade. Just to give an idea of how impressive that .880 is....if the Buckeyes go 16-0 in B10 play the next two years they will still only have an .825 win % !!

Other key factors in determining the success of the team over a given decade:

Buckeye record in The Game by decade
'20-'29: 4-6
'30-'39: 5-5
'40-'49: 2-6-2
'50-'59: 5-5
'60-'69: 7-3 (includes a 4 year consecutive streak)
'70-'79: 5-4-1
'80-'89: 4-6
'90-'99: 2-7-1

We are of course currently 6-2 this decade with a 4 game consecutive streak. A win this year ties the best decade ever with 1 game to go and sets an unprecedented 5 game win streak in The Game.

B10 Championships by decade
'20-'29: 1
'30-'39: 2
'40-'49: 3 (2 outright)
'50-'59: 3 (2 outright and back to back)
'60-'69: 3 (2 outright)
'70-'79: 8 (3 outright and a consecutive streak of 6)
'80-'89: 3 (2 outright)
'90-'99: 3 (1 outright)

This decade has already seen 4 B10 titles (3 outright) including a current consecutive streak of 3 titles and 2 outright. A third consecutive outright title this year would be an all time B10 record. So while we will not see the 8 titles of the '70's matched there are other achievments in this area that could be just as, if not more, impressive.

Also keep in mind this decade saw the record set for most consecutive B10 victories at 20 from '05-'07.

NC's by decade
No need to list them all its easy to keep in your head.

The 40's had 1
The 50's had 2
The 60's had 1
The '00's has 1 and counting

So, the dust still has to settle on these last two years but I don't think its being unrealistic to point out just how special this decade could, very realistically, be in just about every significant category.

Not consistently from the Michigan program, but Wisconsin stacks up favorably over the past decade, and they actually win their bowl games. :tongue2:

I've bolded the differences by my count in the number of outright titles by decade. I added the teens for it to be a complete list since Big Ten play started in 1913. 32 Big Ten titles, 17 outright.

B10 Championships by decade

'10-'19: 2 (2 outright)
'20-'29: 1 (1 outright)
'30-'39: 2 (1 outright)
'40-'49: 3 (2 outright)
'50-'59: 3 (3 outright and 2 back to back)
'60-'69: 3 (2 outright)
'70-'79: 8 (3 outright and a consecutive streak of 6)
'80-'89: 3 (1 outright)
'90-'99: 3 (0 outright)
'00-'07: 4 (2 outright, 2002 was a co-title with Iowa)

We also had a 4-year win streak in the '30s ('34-'37)

Yours is probably right, in fact looking t just the 90's I know it has to be right. I was looking at a list that only focused on OSU and scUM so it probably didn't take note of ties with other programs.

That's great stuff, Jax. I'm shocked that Michigan and Ohio State share the Big 10 win % for the decade so far. I would have thought we'd be up big on them for the decade, but I guess they started off real well while we struggled. But, after 2001, I'd think we're up 5 or 6 games at least.

Going strictly by my beer-infested memory:

Number of Big 10 losses
2002: Bucks 0, UM 2
2003: Bucks 2, UM 1
2004: Bucks 4, UM 1 (?)
2005: Bucks 1, UM 3
2006: Bucks 0, UM 1
2007: Bucks 1, UM 2 (?)

This gives OSU 8 and Michigan 10. Damn. Never mind my 5 or 6 estimate. Time for another beer.
