DEBuckeye

It ain't easy, bein' cheesy.
Does anyone here have experience with, or information on, licensing requirements for producing goods with any OSU trademarks, logos, etc? My Mom is interested in some info regarding the sale of children's knitted hats with logos or symbols on them.

Any info would be appreciated.

BKB might be a good one to ask...

Actually jwinslow or scarletinmyveins would be better to ask. We tried to get some t-shirts made up a few years ago and they are very strict with their policy. Flat out told us no. So they made them anyway.:)

Actually Im still going to say BKB is more informed on this matter, LOL...

and for the love of God, if she goes ahead and makes them regardless of approval or not, DO NOT SELL THEM ON CAMPUS!

You may not have much luck. Anything with OSU's actual logo is probably off-limits, however that never seems to stop rogue ebay salesmen.

We ended up being okay to sell the t-shirts once we cleared up that:

a) BP does not exist to sell t-shirts (otherwise the site name could also be an issue)

b) The logo does not infringe on the OSU logos at all.

c) We would not sell them on campus

I would have to think that it can't be too expensive per unit to get OSU licensing if Steve and Barry's can sell OSU stuff for $6-$10.

DE- I would have your mom just knit a block O on the hat and give it a name that starts with an O.

I got to the right department using the University's web site and e-mail. Took less than four hours to have the right person e-mailing me back.

My observation was/is they are the biggest tight asses outside the NFL when it comes licensing.

My issue was a set of blazer buttons. There's a mens store in Charleston, SC that makes brass and enamel blazer buttons for damned near every US college. I bought a set with the OSU seal on them. I lost a couple over the years and when I tried to replace them I found out that OSU had given them a very rough time over the issue and remains the only major university for whom you cannot but the things. Shortly after this the Alum Mag started advertising a blazer from some store in Toledo the buttons of which suck in comparison.

As they should be. They have an image to protect. If they just let any guy who walked off the street be able to use their image then there would be all sorts of shit out there that may be of low quality or not something that the university would want their name on it.

my company is going through licensing right now actually for a product i developed.

osu is difficult.

michigan is difficult. i actually have a letter from them from the week after we beat them denying my license due to their recent success on the football field. i guess only losing by 3 to us is now considered success in ann arbor.

the CLC is the best way to go. CLC as in collegiate licensing company. they have the vast majority of the schools (but no osu or michigan). many CLC schools require membership in the fair labor association before going forward. nearly all have heavy fees as well as prepaid upfront royalties.

good luck.
