OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Columbus Dispatch article today....

Ohio State men's basketball | 2017 recruiting class might still grow

Asked whether the Buckeyes were still in the market for one more player within the parameters of what Matta said in August, he said, “If it’s the right people. If it’s the right guy, yes, but I think when you’re looking at a team that is only losing Marc Loving and who we would be adding, if it’s the right piece of the puzzle we’ll do it.”

Ohio State has a full complement of 13 scholarship players this year because it elevated walk-ons Joey Lane and Jimmy Jent to that status. Doing so has no impact on how many players the Buckeyes can recruit or sign going forward, and taking the former walk-ons out of the picture, Ohio State still has one scholarship available for next year. That is, provided nobody transfers or leaves early. As Matta mentioned, Loving is the lone senior on the roster.

The Buckeyes remain in the hunt for five-star point guard Troy Brown Jr. from Las Vegas Centennial, who has taken an official visit to campus. He can play other positions but prefers to remain on the ball, and The Dispatch has learned that Beverly’s commitment does not mean the Buckeyes are recruiting Brown any less.

Among those also still in the mix are five-star shooting guard M.J. Walker from Jonesboro (Georgia) Lithia Springs and four-star shooting guard Nojel Eastern from Evanston (Illinois) Township. The 247Sports “Crystal Ball” projections have Walker 100 percent to Maryland and Eastern 100 percent to Michigan State, but Brown’s future is more undecided. California is the odds-on favorite at 31 percent, followed by Arizona (25 percent), Oregon (19 percent), Kansas (12 percent) and "other" (6 percent).

I wasn't aware Chris Jent's son was on the team. I found this article:

Just sayin': If there are 12 NBA players from Ohio, then Ohio State needs to really get better at "in state" recruiting, etc.

Just going off the top of my head here:

Sullinger- OSU
Koufus- OSU
Trey Burke- recruited over, TTUN
Norris Cole- recruited over, Cleveland St.
Larry Nance Jr.- recruited over, Wyoming
Adrien Payne- not sure the story, MSU
Caris Lavert- no clue, TTUN
OJ Mayo- recruiting problems, ended up at USC
LeBron James- no college
Luke Babbitt (?)- not sure he's counted, but from Cinci, moved to Nevada at young age and went to Reno

That's 10 of the 12, just for reference. Blanking on the others.

There have always been guys from Ohio that make the pros that never really get sniffed by Ohio State. Gary Trent, Brian Grant, Antonio Daniels were some guys from the last generation. Same with NFL QB...Roethlisberger and Hoyer I can think of this year. The draft is going to see Kizer and Trubisky picked ahead of Barrett. You don't get every gem in Ohio, but you snag a Conley, Oden, and Evan Turner...should work out well. When it comes to basketball, if Ohio State can just get some of the best from Ohio with help from Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, we should be a national power every year. It doesn't take a national profile.

Semaj Christon from Cincy and Xavier is the back-up PG for OKC. CJ McCollum, of course, is tearing it up in Portland, by way of Canton. Some other guys that are kind of on rosters right now are Brian Roberts (Toledo and UDayton), Chris Johnson (Columbus and UDayton), and Terry Rozier, (Cleveland and Louisville). The incomparable Kevin Martin is only 33, so he might sign with someone by the end of the year, you never know.

Bragg never gave Ohio State the time of day. Esa was never really highly recruited by Matta for some reason. I do not think Ward ever expressed an interest in the Buckeyes. Some home state guys just do not want to come to the home state school.

this is a good point and Im not slamming Matta for not landing these guys....i will say though that these types of guys leaving the state is part of the overall problem with the program right now. stale
