OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

well, back then it was shiny and new and that was the place to go and now people have forgotten:sad:

Maybe it's just sentimentality, but I remember St. John as being a better atmosphere with the students in the bleachers closest to the floor and the smaller size of it. The Schott is beautiful, but for most games it lacks a buzz.

I was saying to the guys I went to the game with the other night that the Schott could never completely sell out and make the atmosphere anything like St John. The could get rid of the entire top ring and still have a great draw. Empty seats are disgusting.

Go get him Thad :biggrin2:
Video: 7-foot-7 freshman makes his varsity debut
See the first game action for Robert Bobroczky.

Giant Robert Bobroczky made his big American debut for SPIRE Institute (Geneva, Ohio) on Thursday night and played limited minutes in an 87-51 loss to First Love Christian Academy (Washington, Pa.).

The 7-foot-7, 190-pound native of Romania is the second-tallest player in the world and taller than anyone currently in the NBA.

From the footage, it's obvious he's still adjusting to his towering frame and is in the initial stages of his development.

"It felt nice to play finally," Bobroczky said. "The game was as fast as I expected and I still need to work a lot. I just have to be patient and work, and the results will come."

The 16-year-old wonder showcased adept passing ability for his size and has undeniable potential - but he'll also be the first one to say that he needs to bulk up so he can help fulfill his dream of playing in the NBA.

"I'm mostly trying to get my body stronger and better," Bobroczky said. ''I'm eating 4,000 calories per day and want to weigh between 220-230 pounds by the end of this season. I'm also working on my speed, mobility and every part of my game."

Bobroczky was almost 7 feet tall at just 12 years old. He left home at the age of 14 and played in Italy for two years before joining the state-of-the-art international academy at SPIRE Institute.

"SPIRE Institute reached out to me and when I saw their facilities I was impressed," Bobroczky said. "It's the perfect place for me."

The Schott CAN be incredibly loud and intimidating. The Duke game when Sullinger was here was an awesome atmosphere, as were a lot of other games during the mid to late 2000s.

The issue is that even when OSU is elite the non headline games will always be 60% full at the Schott at best.

Is that Manute Bol's kid? Face (and body make-up) look very familiar. Jake, St. John's was/is an incredible place to watch bball. Didn't seem to be too bad with Luke, Hondo, Siegfied, Nowell all toiled there. AND, it's a heckuva lot closer to the dorms than the Schott. There is probably a fleet of busses now that take students to the Schott, but at St. John's you could watch for awhile, then libe it for a couple of hours (or go to the Varsity Club), instead of trudging through four feet of snow with the wolves nipping at your heels (or having a cold, stiff wind in your face for hours (or so it seemed)......

I know that a lot of you guys complain that Matta cannot recruit Ohio for its top players but so far Thad has the #1, #4, #5 players in Ohio as ranked by 247sports.
Darius Bazley
Justin Ahrens
Dana Goodwin

I will admit that it might be nice to add Cohill or Hunter to next year's class but then you probably will complain that he cannot recruit out of Ohio. Cook

I'm glad to see those kids committed to tOSU. Hopefully they will be part of a positive turnaround.

I'm not sure why you seem to feel the need to couch every basketball post as though some of us dislike Thad. I don't think that's the case. I like Thad. I think most of us do. I'm just not confident he's going to turn things around at this point. I'm hoping he can prove me wrong because winning is more fun than losing. Time will tell.

While a few have mentioned misses on OH kids, I think its been the overall recruiting starting with the 2011 class that has been scrutinized by most. Recruitment/development has not been good the last 5-6 years.

I am not going to say that I know how the '18 class will end up, but given the national composite rankings of the players, this is the kind of class that O'Brien was ripped for (one top 100 guy). I do think that class along with Wesson is a little better than their rankings, but I don't see any program changers committed and its been a while since Thad has had success without having NBA level talent on the roster.

I know I sound like a broken record but why Thad keeps Dave Richardson on staff is beyond me. Recruiting has not been up the levels of Oden, Conley, Cook, Sullinger, Thomas, etc. but it hasn't been terrible. What has been terrible is player development...both in S&C and on the court. Recently there just does not seem to be any emphasis on S&C. Lyle has shed a little weight but the rest of the team does not look any different from year to year...and that's been a problem the last couple of years. I'm not expecting Marotti-type results because football S&C and basketball S&C are very different. But I look at the last couple of years (and nothing from last year really counts considering that whole class left) and I don't see the kind of development you would expect to see.

I agree recruiting has been solid but also agree there have not really been any "program changers" since Russell...and before that you have to go back to Sullinger and Thomas in the recruiting class of 2010. Thad build a reputation for having a program changer every 4 years. Oden/Cook/Conley in 2006. Sullinger and Thomas in 2010. Russell in 2014. He got one year out of Conely, Cook and Oden, one out of Sullinger, two out of Thomas and one out of Russell. If you look at Thad's all-time recruiting and focus on the top 20 guys from the last five years, the highest rated recruit OSU has had outside of Russell is Lyle and after that it's Giddens and Grandstaff. Those are the only names in the top 20 that were recruited in the last five years. A one and done, a guy who has not lived up to expectations and two guys transferred after contributing very little for one season.

For 2018, which will mark another four years, Thad has Dane Goodwin, Darius Bazley and Justin Ahrens committed. All good players but none that I would label as "program changers". OSU chased a few top rated guys initially like Darius Garland, Jahvon Quinerly, Keldon Johnson and Khavon Moore but aren't a serious threat to land of of those guys. Dwayne Cohill remains a top target and would be a nice addition to the class but Thad is really struggling to land some of the really big fish.
