OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I did not know what Holtmann is thinking but I think that we need to take at least 4 players, if not 5, in this class and get this basketball program back on track. I do not like this comment from my new coach and hopefully he is just talking to appease some listeners.

I understand balancing classes but I also understand getting this program going again.
After reading a little more, I think the three is a base. The way it sounds is he's going to take the time to evaluate the underclassmen and if he feels we need more, they would go that way...hence him saying "potentially" more. If this staff can develop some of these younger guys, they may feel they can afford to balance things out a little more. If they feel that they don't have the players they need, the 2018 class could grow. Frankly, from what I've seen, the 2019 class looks a bit more talented than 2018. So waiting, if they can, makes sense to me.

especially considering Tate, Kam and KBD all exhaust their eligibility after this season.
KBD is a junior.. Last year was a medical redshirt year.. So only two guys will be leaving but we still have plenty of room.

I do not know how long you want to wait. These guys take time to develop when you get them on campus unless you are going to recruit 1 and done players which I do not think Holtmann is going to do.. If you wait until 2019 until you bring in enough talent to turn the program around, you have more patience than I do and probably a lot of other people also IMO There will also be plenty of room in 2019.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the idea of 3 for 2018 is based on. Is he planning on adding one more to 2017 instead maybe? He may be implying it could be too hard to get the right quality recruits for 2018, saying he isn't going to get reaches just to fill the roster.

With the current state of the roster and general atmosphere of malaise around the program, it's gonna take some patience. My personal expectations would be using 2017-18 to see what the staff can wring out of the current guys, and with some luck, get an NIT invite. 2018-19 should be a year with an expectation to make the tournament. 2019-20, to me, is when we should start looking to make noise in the B1G and hopefully nationally.

That's year three. Given the shape the program was in when they inherited it, I don't see that as at all unreasonable. And taking a 3 man class in 2018 should not hinder that. But again, I don't see anything he said as evidence that we will absolutely only take 3 guys, just that that's the immediate expectation without much data to go on. If the new staff can turn guys like the Wessons, Young, Jackson, Potter and Funderburk (if he gets his act together) into legitimate B1G-level players, we won't have to rely on kids from 2018 as heavily and they can afford to shift some of those scholarships to 2019. If not, I'd expect they'll take a bigger class in 2018. Remember, they haven't even held a practice with the current roster, so they don't emphatically know what they have to work with aside from what they've seen on film under a different staff.

If he wants regular classes of 3, that is fine with me. My thinking is he would want to use as many schollies as he can to get his guys in, but if he can't get those guys then that is the main reason to settle for 3. If he doesn't add another guard for 2017, it is going to be hard to fill needs for the team with only 3 spots to use on the 2018 class.

The guy said "five to seven" over the next two years, depending on what happens with the roster. If we only take the five number, that puts us, at the most, exactly where we are right now, which is two spots under. Why even say five? You guys are cutting him too much slack. There is no possible way they are paying him 3 million dollars to land us right where we already are in two years, scholarship-wise. The correct answer is "we need at least seven players in the next two years."

Three for 2018 surprises me as well.

But remember, he is new here. Someone needs to sit down with him on the Scout website and show him all the player that are out there and what their star ratings are. In particular he needs to understand how to use the search function to find out which kids are from Ohio.

Once he gets the hang of it I am sure he will be fine.

With Young we have two Sophs and four Frosh on the roster. If there are no early departures and we add 7 in the next two years we are at 13. The NCAA would prefer we not exceed that number.

Given the late start for 2018 dividing those seven into 3 then 4 versus 4 then 3 sounds like a good plan.

Of course, at the rate we have lost folks early the past few years it seems like we should have 5 scholarships available every year. Le't hope it doesn't work that way unless we get a couple of "one and dones".

Also, normally when there is a transition of coaches, there is at least a transfer or two among guys who think they don't fit anymore. Jermyl Jackson-Wilson the example from when Matta came, he did not fit the style of play being an interior-oriented 4-man and left promptly after the season started. Three sounds a little low at first, all things considered. But if it's an awesome 3 that are great fits, it will work out anyway.

I did not realize that you followed basketball recruiting so closely. The only guy that I am aware of that Ohio State is involved with for 2019 is Francis. Perhaps you can enlighten me on what other players they are involved with, or even available, for 2019. I do not have premium access to other sites and I do not know if you are getting that information from one of those sites or not but I would be interested in why you think 2019 is superior to 2018 with regard to recruits.

If you only take 3-4 guys in 2018 and you expect to make some noise in 2019-20, I do not see how you are going to do that when you are saving your scholarships for the 2019 class. As I have stated and I am sure that you are aware, these guys do take some time to develop unless they are 5* and they say bye-bye in one year.

I expect they will add 4 in 2018. A CG, SG, SF, & PF/C is the right balance to me. They leave a spot "open" at PG for Francis that way and address all of their needs.
You might be correct about 2018 but you never know who might say yes to an offer. I do not know of any 5*that they might be involved with but you do not say no to those guys. I would stop at 5 no matter what:lol:

THERE ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OHIO STATE, BUTLER ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL

83073_h.jpg,qitok=3v8IKkt5.pagespeed.ce.K728s4JdK1.jpg

New Ohio State assistant coach Terry Johnson spent the last 10 years at Butler. The move to Columbus as part of Chris Holtmann’s staff was a bit weird at first. Johnson admitted as much himself.

But there was one thing Johnson noticed quickly, something that certainly helped aid with the transition.

“I can get in more doors and I can get my phone calls answered a little bit more,” the Buckeyes’ new assistant coach said with a smile last week.

Such is the power of a place like Ohio State.

Johnson and his fellow assistants — Ryan Pedon and Mike Schrage — did just fine at Butler. They signed the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history in 2017. Things here are just a little bit different.

They’re a lot bigger.

“Guys are excited,” Johnson said. “Guys were excited about Butler too but people still looked at Butler as small. Butler was great and the right people went there, but now I’m just in a whole different ballgame now. That’s one thing for me as a coach that I’m really excited about that.”

Many of the prospects the Buckeyes are now recruiting are ones this staff targeted at Butler. There’s a bit of a different feel to it now that the Ohio State brand is behind them, though.

It’s not a shot at Butler, but as Pedon said, it’s just different.

“Kids know,” Pedon said. “I think that we recruited to Butler which was a tremendous place in a great city that had its niche, but Ohio State is a completely different beast. It really is. I don’t say that to be good, bad or indifferent, but it’s different.”
