OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

minny insider says ohio state hasn't offered while the other three finalists have, so it appears as though the buckeyes are window dressing or perhaps a hopeful wish. regardless, what i have found on him is that he's been an excellent shooter during spring and summer aau. he averaged about 15 points on volume while shooting 79% from the line and 42% behind the arc. zegarowski's greatest threat is his outside shooting.

From the Marcus zegarowski thread by @OSU_Buckguy

i'm curious about whether this is an offer or an "offer," with a possible stipulation centered on the timeline regarding ayala/weaver/muhammad/cohill/phinisee/etc. my guess is holt wants two ball-handling guards between '17 and '18, but would he take zegarowski as the first commitment? without a visit, though, it appears that creighton or washington is the likely choice.
For some reason or another, I think that we are going to get Weaver but I do not think that we get Ayala so the reverse will probably happen. Also, for some strange reason the Cohill camp has been very quiet as of late so I have no idea what is going on with him. I would take Ahrens back if he wants to come back and swallow my pride but I think he is going up north. I think that they should go after Hayes and if they have to redshirt him that is fine with me. It is not like we are going anyplace next year so what the hell. I have no idea who else we are going to take but I do not think that zegarowski is coming here. Everything regarding him points to Creighton which I do not understand at all. I mean what is there to do at Creighton.

I like to keep the projections of the class separate from the individual recruit threads and that is why I moved my quote to this thread.

Well no Ayala for 2017, looks like from this point the team is only going to have minor additions for this upcoming 2017-18 season.
Too bad Matta mostly ignored the grad transfer market this past Spring, especially knowing Lyle quit the team. He was a spin doctor extraordinaire, but I have a hard time thinking he could honestly have looked at himself in the mirror and said he was doing everything possible to get the program back on track. You can't lose Lyle, add no one other than Braxton Beverly at guard, and think you are doing a good job.

Chris just has his work cut out for him in the 2018 class. He still did a great job to salvage the 2017 class and have 3 solid players in the class instead of 1 (Beverly didn't count as a solid add in my book so I don't see him as a notable loss from the class). If you look at it from the standpoint of Chris wants 3-man classes regularly, then he met his quota anyway.

I have a feeling Chris prefers adding both Weaver and Muhammad in the 2018 class ... losing Ayala now at least helps make that more of a possibility. I think he would pick Muhammad or Weaver over Ayala if he had a choice.

I don't know about that. This program needed backcourt help right away and Ayala was somewhat unique in how much he could have immediately helped at both PG and off-guard, especially if he had come in 2017.

Our back-court is gonna be scary young in 2018-2019. Might need to bring in a grad transfer along with Torrence and whatever other freshmen. I pray it is freshmen of the Weaver/Muhammad caliber. Because it's gonna need to be.

Who do you propose he should have recruited? Give me names. Matta offered Daniels and Johnston, at least. Mark Alstork from Wright State would have been an option.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Beverly as a solid ball-handling PG. The offer was legit. His ceiling wasn't All-B1G, but his floor wasn't something like 2 minutes a game his whole career, either. He would have been a much better facilitator than Lyle, that much was obvious.

well i guess the news couldnt all be positive for Holtmann n Co.......ayala not reclassifying, francis looking more and more like he'll leave the state....awesome

We'll be good. I see Francis staying in the 614. Ayala, it would have been beyond a dream. We already got the dream scenario with Musa Jallow reclassifying, Kyle Young pulling the switcharoo and retiring Matta and replacing him with an energetic Holtman... in June. We can get just as good of talent as Ayala, just the following year. The future is bright.

If you had told me the new guy was going to come in and miss on Dane Goodwin, Jerome Hunter, Nance, and Jeremiah Francis (and who knows who else), I would have been all...

but I guess I'll give him time to get his Ohio State guys. I still like the Jallow and Young moves, so we'll see.

So what is getting connected with a few prospects worth? If you want but don't get, what have you actually done? Did those guys even visit? Matta's secondary recruiting strategy sucked, that is why he is gone as much as anything. He got 1 grad transfer in the like 10 years he could have gotten them. Clearly it was not an area he tried hard enough in. Honestly I think Dakich this year will have similar overall production as Beverly.
