OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Yeah, based on what holt2 has said before, we are already one over our projected 18 class, so he's probably not pushing too hard for anything right now other than "dream" recruits.

I have no idea why Herro would cancel on the in-state school to go to an unproven Ohio State program, but you've got to throw your hat in there. I'm thinking it's got to be more of a blue-blood, but he wanted to flesh out the list.

Ohio State will host a massive list of unofficial basketball visitors this weekend for their big game against Penn State, according to a source.

Among the visitors is 2018 committed prospect Justin Ahrens, who is regarded as a four-star prospect on Scout.

The Buckeyes staff will also host a a number of 2019 and 2020 prospects. The list includes five-star forward Alonzo Gaffney, Trayce Jackson-Davis Center, Zach Loveday, John Hugley, Semari Curtis, Andre Gordon, Dominiq Penn Dublin, Andy Barba, Jared Jones, Kyle Sturdivant, Patrick Kelly and BJ Boston.

based on the '19 offers so far, it looks like coach is going after a point guard, a post player (either 4 or 5 or 4/5), and a wing. i will be a bit surprised if the wing is not highly athletic, a la jallow and muhammad. i think the '17 team will only emphasize that need for an upgrade in athleticism. there is no one else at all like jallow, and that is not acceptable.

Not OSU related per se, but IU hosts two 5-stars today for their Hoosier Hysteria kickoff practice (Langford and Garland). Big night for our now basketball rival Archie.
Garland chooses Vandy.

Romeo has IU and Vandy in his Final 3. Would get a little interesting if Archie doesn’t close him...though, I’m confused what is going on at Vanderbilt basketball to make it so exciting?

I read where Jake Diebler was Garland's primary recruiter so there is that. I also read where SHI1TU was waiting to see if Garland would commit to Vandy and if Garland did ShI1Tu would also go there.

Early signing period: Which new staffs made the grade?

OHIO STATE - Grade: A-

The Buckeyes sit with one of the sneaky-good classes. They checked many of the boxes, thanks to the signing of elite defender Luther Muhammad, a high-upside and versatile forward in Jaedon LeDee, a top in-state prospect with shot-making and athleticism in wing Justin Ahrens, and one of the more underrated players nationally in Duane Washington Jr. The reason for an A- is the fact that Ohio State desperately needs a facilitating agent at the point guard spot. If Courtney Ramey were to sign in the spring for the Buckeyes, they would receive an A+.

From the Gonzaga game thread
@OSU_Buckguy
the athleticism of muhammad and ledee is going to be a breath of fresh air next year. let's hope the next player or two in the '18 class is comparably athletic.

Probably should put this in the Recruiting Discussion thread, did that, but do you think that we go after one or two more guys for the 2018 class. I do not know of anyone on our radar for next year with the exception of Ramey and that is a looong shot.

the other two guys besides Ramey who would come in with the 2018 class and there is confirmed strong OSU interest are a couple of athletic 6'10ish centers. one is a JUCO, Yuat Alok, the other is Xavier decommit, Kentrevious Jones. Alok reports an OSU offer, OSU is reportedly one of a few schools who has been contacting Jones the most.

aside from that there have been a few names mentioned in passing but nothing solid. and I agree, I think Ramey is a "looong shot."

Holtmann could actually take two more for 2018 if he decides he wants to go this way.
He could take Ramey and Alot or Alot and Jones.
If Ramey is one and done, he still would have two schollies for 2019.
If it is Alot and Jones, he would still have a schollie for Alonzo Gaffney.
If he takes Alot and a grad transfer, he still has two schollies for 2019 for Gaffney and a point guard.
Holtmann has different ways he can do this.

Thanks. There is a thread on Yuat Alok but I was not sure how strong the interest was from him with regard to Ohio State. If I were Ho1tman I sure as hell would find a PG as fast as I could after that debacle against Butler.

I think CJ will be better next season and I think Washington and Muhammad can help with ballhandling duties against the press, but yeah, it's a concern if we want to try to make the Dance next season.

Given that we were turned down by about a dozen PGs, there's not a lot left in the HS class. Grad transfer would probably be our best bet for someone that could help immediately. But then you still have some extra guard recruiting to do for 2019, which is a weak class for guards.

Maybe there will be a late bloomer HS PG/CG in the spring, a traditional transfer (but they would have to sit out a year), or even maybe a JUCO who is worthwhile.
