OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I could see us taking the right kid to add to this class and I also believe we are wide open to transfers.

I think the numbers are there and I can't see letting them sit empty. If not a single current Soph left early this year or NEXT and if not a single soph or frosh transferred or took hardship this year or next we already have 18 spots available for next years class.

Somebody help me out with a few things.

I assume we are done with the current class. Also seems we need some bigs but that will be addressed next class. True, True?
yes, i certainly think we're done for the 2019 class. i'd be shocked and even disappointed if we pursue/sign another conventional recruit unless there are multiple transfers. the only thing that possibly makes even the slightest shred of sense would be a redshirted ben roderick.

1. the roster for the 2019 season is positively stacked at no less than 11 players vying for major time. even if we lose to transfer either ahrens, ledee, or jallow, there is no need to try to upgrade what already projects to be the deepest team we've had in ages. as i've stated many times before, adding a player to that team will probably just create issues in the locker room. team chemistry is going to be a -- perhaps the -- priority for ho1tmann & co. next year.

2. barring unforeseeable attrition, adding a conventional recruit to the 2019 class means the 2020 class will consist of only one player. a 4-player class for 2018, a 4-player class for 2019, and a 1-player class for 2020 create an imbalance.

3. perhaps what signals the most that 2019 is done is that the staff is no longer pursuing 2019 players. all of the attention since liddell's announcement has shifted to 2020 and 2021.

and, yes, the staff is addressing the need for a big in the 2020 class. loveday certainly appears to be the top target, but i wouldn't be surprised if the post player turns out to be a 6'9"ish power forward with a stout body and a strong interior game. i hope we get loveday, but it will be quite the fight. louisville, ttun, purdue, et al. are serious contenders. and i can't imagine that no blue bloods will jump into the mix with an offer.

He is sort of a mystery man. According to the 247 site he really does not that many big-time offers. Surprising sort of because when he was in Gahanna there was quite a bit of talk about him and how good he was going to be. I guess times of changed.

Mitchell just hasn't progressed much from his 8th grade year. He was a long athletic 8th grader that could handle the ball. He's grown a couple of inches in high school and his athleticism has had a slow progression, but his ball handling is about the same and he really hasn't improved his shooting much. athletically he's got more than enough to work with and I don't want to question his desire, but something is just missing that the really good ones have.

I thought you were talking about Mickey Mitchell at first ... he of the 12 points scored this year at ASU. Giddens is even worse, 7 points this year in 26 minutes played.

I think the question of whether we would add another player in '19 comes down to whether the staff thinks we have any holes that need plugged or whether there is a player that clearly improves our situation. I don't think we have any glaring holes without any transfers, but I think there are players out there that could improve our situation.

I know you can't really say anyone is going pro or transferring, but I don't think it would be much a shock if it happened. Its hard to get more than 8 or 9 guys regular minutes. I don't want to push anyone out the door, but if the '19 frosh come in and get regular minutes, then I wouldn't be surprised if we lost someone to transfer.

If you really look at it, the depth for the 2020 team, as it appears now, will be pretty strong. Could have CJW, Duane, EJ, Alonzo, Musa and Jaedon all coming off the bench. Looks to have as good of depth of talent as OSU has had in many years.

We certainly could have great depth in 2020. I don't know how some of those guys may feel about coming off the bench (none would be frosh), though one would have to be starting with DJ, LM, kaleb and presumably young (you didn't mention ahrens and assume you don't have him as a starter). Gaffney or EJ would likely be the other starter. Obviously team success could help keep guys happy with a little less playing time. Perimeter shooting might be a bit of a question mark depending on how well guys progress in that area.

that's what Washington and Ahrens are supposed to be for.

it takes time.

but we do need a dynamic wing scorer in the 2020 class. almost wondering if we should offer Ben Roderick for the 2019 class. not sure he's a high major prospect but he is a natural scorer.

The way the 2017-2018 season helped us with 2019 recruiting, I am wondering if the 2018-2019 season is going to end up hurting us at all with 2020 recruiting.

I'm leaning towards "not so much" because there is a clear talent issue and 2020 recruits know that they should playing in the context of a more talented/experienced roster come the 2020-2021 season. But it will be interesting to see how it impacts our recruiting on both sides if the wheels come off this season.

"Both sides" meaning that the staff might just start prioritizing natural-born volume scorers above any other consideration if our offensive struggles continue this badly--and on the recruits' side whatever faint hope we had for T20 guys like BJ Boston and Jalen Johnson might be rapidly fading, if not gone already.
