OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

just my opinion

if they could combine Diallo's length/athleticism with Skogman's shooting/BB IQ, sure. but then you'd also be talking about a T10 recruit who'd already be committed to UK by now or something. instead, Diallo is a project and Skogman is Micah Potter redux.

I don't care if they aren't true centers, Liddell and Gaffney are both far more ready to help our frontcourt and our team overall than either of these dudes.

either add a prolific scorer or save the scholarship.

I really only have interest in Mcneil or Roderick at this point. Would be fine with banking the scholarship as well.

I think Diallo might provide a nice backup to Wesson for the next 2 years. You never know when you are going to be able to get someone that size. In a couple years, he might be something to really built around.

I am not sure that you can look at Gaffney as a true Big Ten center. He probably would be more than adequate but I also think that you might lose some of his other skills by locking him in at the 5 position.

Sure it might be nice to find a nice shooting SG but most of the really good ones are gone or we are not involved with any.

Frankly, I say the hell with banking the scholarship because I am tired of waiting for Ohio State basketball to start back on the road to recovery. I am not for wasting the scholarship either but then sooner or later we are going to have to trust the coaches:biggrin:

for one, it's interesting that the staff (particularly pedon) is reaching out to another player available for 2019. for two, it's interesting that it's a juco player.

sean mcneil is a 6'4" freshman shooting guard playing for sinclair community college (dayton). from northern kentucky, he had originally committed to bellarmine (d2) for 2017 but decided he wasn't ready for the academic side of college basketball when he showed up for orientation. he spent a year at a local cc without playing organized ball.

so far at sinclair, he is leading all of juco at 31 points per game while shooting 88% from the line and 42% behind the arc (on very high volume with deep range). the rebounding stats are also impressive for a sg. the ballhandling is pretty nifty, too. one caveat, however, is that sinclair is a d2 (of 3) juco college. he's not getting those stats against the type of competition that, say, cj jackson faced.

a caveat to that caveat is that some big players are getting involved. dayton, toledo, and wku have offered. wvu offered today. uva, marquette, xavier, missouri, and ttu are sniffing around, which perhaps allays some academic concerns. and the tape below is rather impressive, regardless of competition. huggins won't be the last coach from a major program to offer.

i have nothing to base this on, but i'd bet that wvu will prove to be the leader. it's his first big offer. they need players. the path to playing time should be open. perhaps most important to mcneil is that the environment at and around wvu probably fits a player from northern kentucky who has been apprehensive. on other hand, his hometown is more or less a suburb of cincinnati, so wvu ain't exactly close. perhaps wku, xavier, and dayton have the upper hand, with programs like uc and louisville to follow.

mcneil has since been offered by texas tech, missouri, ole miss, and oklahoma state. including wvu, no high-major that has offered strikes me as one that exactly prioritizes academics, so i wonder how much that is an obstacle to other programs jumping into the mix.

though not too surprising, it's interesting nonetheless that ho1tmann will consider conventional transfers to join the 2020 team. if we do get a conventional transfer, i'd put money on the guy playing in the post rather than the backcourt. doing so would open up the staff to some frontcourt players who need time to develop. projects, if you will.

Ohio State men’s basketball | Chris Holtmann: C.J. Jackson’s status ‘up in the air’ for Iowa game
“We very well may add another player,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll be two, but it could be in the form of potentially a high school player. We are recruiting a few of those. Potentially a four-year transfer that would have to sit out a year, and then potentially a grad transfer. We’re kind of looking at all of those options. The spring has become an incredibly busy time, so as soon as the season ends, you’re busy for the next 6-8 weeks. I’m gone five days a week and a lot of it is because you’re certainly recruiting two or three classes at once but you’re also looking to add to your team.

I am certainly intrigued by Diallo's elite measurables but with so little footage it is hard for me to say. You would be looking for a Clint Capela like big man which is to say that he catches lobs and protects the paint. Are his feet agile enough for PnR coverage? I am not as attached to Loveday as others so I would be okay with the risk.

Nomatta, would you prefer BR or Diallo? Obviously different positions but the scholarship count makes it comparable.

one thing is certain about diallo: that boy's neck tells me he's nowhere close to his maximum weight/muscle.

his team picture makes it even more clear:

What are his current measurables, anyone have those?
