OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

There is so little film on this guy that it really makes it hard to comment on his potential beyond the obvious physical characteristics that he possess. On the little I can find, he reminds me of the archetype Syracuse big man that recruits for their zone. With no defensive three second rule in college that physical stature and length can be game changing.

I'm pretty conflicted here, especially as Roderick continues to tear it up in HS play. Diallo is, realistically, a couple years away from being a contributor at this level. But the potential is great with him, and honestly it's just been so painful watching these past two games without any interior length that I could kind of go either way on wanting us to offer or not. Good thing I'm not the coach.
I think Roderick is probably in the same boat as Diallo and at least the latter has some size. I think we have enough wing players especially with the class coming in.

Thinking this may be JJ's son as I'm quite sure Satch didn't have another son lol...but anyway I thought I'd drop the vid in case someone might have more info.

yep, that's jj's son. very impressive tape. not that sons and nephews must go through growth spurts at the same time as their fathers and uncles, but i'd certainly like to know how tall jj was as a freshman before topping out at 6'5". or how tall jared was before growing to be 6'9". regardless, jalen looks like an offer with the hope that he reaches 6'3"+.

edit: if i remember correctly, jared said at least a year ago that jalen would become the best sullinger.

edit: jalen is a 2021 recruit, so he's obviously a sophomore, not a freshman as i stated.

found this article from 2016:

Turner spent enough time at the Sullinger household to grow close with Jared's 12-year-old nephew, Jalen. Though Jared said his nephew "really looks up to" Turner, Turner looks at his young friend as more of an equal. Sometimes, he can even forget Jalen's not an adult.

"I think I was with somebody this summer," Turner remembered. "I said, come with me to go holla at my boy. So when I pull up to the house it's like 11:30 at night, and the kid opens the door. He's like, 'This is who you're coming to see? Evan, he's a little kid.' I said, 'Damn, I forget he's 12 years old.' We're sitting on the couch kicking it, I'm like, I forget you're 12 years old. But that's definitely the homie. He's basketball crazy. It's really inspiring to see somebody, a young kid, that's that basketball crazy and that into the game."

Will Jalen continue the Sullinger legacy? Jared said his nephew will be "the best (Sullinger) if he gets the height."

"He's a guard. He's a pure guard," Jared said. "He's going to be the best."

Agreed Turner: "Probably. He's got a killer instinct. Great jump shot. His ball-handling skills are great. He thinks he's the best Sully himself. He already thinks he's the best one so that's half the battle. He can definitely ball. He's unreal. His skill set's crazy for a kid his age. He loves it."

Maybe one day Jalen will follow his good friend and uncle to Ohio State.

between jj, jared, and evan in jalen's ear, it almost seems like the bananas should already be limbering up.

any thought to taking both Roderick and Diallo with the thought of redshirting 1 (or both) of them as if they were a 2020 prospect? Who in the 2020 class is even favoring us? Zeb is gone, Loveday trending away, who knows with Penn......Just spitballin here

I’m certainly no expert but can’t see any reason to be in a rush or any reason to take 2. I just can’t see that.

I’d actually be ok sticking with the 3 we have and see what the transfer market looks like. I’m just a fan of being patient. We landed 3 studs so there is no reason to be in a panic mode just because the current team has had an expectedly rough year.

a current or incoming player would have to depart for osu take both roderick and diallo. even if one or both of them were to redshirt, they'd still count toward the scholarship limit.

With EJ and Gaffney coming in, I really do not know where Rodrick would fit with Luther, Washington and Ahrens already here. I just did not see the need for him. I see a need for a big man (Diallo or maybe a transfer) because as I have said before we really do not have a backup plan for when Wesson graduates. I know that is two years down the pike but I would like to have someone in here learning out to play the 5 position in the Big Ten.

With regard to Penn, all the recruiting sites that I have access to still are pointing him to Ohio State. I guess it would be nice to have two good PG's on the roster and Walker and Penn would do that.
