OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

occeus is a sit-one, play-one transfer guard. regarded as a strong defender (conference defensive poy). was hampered by injuries last season. video below of his sophomore season.

not sure i understand the staff kicking the tires here for just a one-year player if the expectation is to have muhammad and washington in addition to jallow and ahrens. if we're going to grab a transfer who's here for just one season, i'd hope that the guy has more height and/or distributing skills. don't see enough to distinguish him from the aforementioned four players.

Seems like we could become a player for Keon Johnson now:

https://vanderbilt.rivals.com/news/where-does-vanderbilt-stand-with-keon-johnson

"Keon Johnson was a top 2020 priority for Bryce Drew. So how can Jerry Stackhouse keep Vanderbilt in the hunt? Johnson said keep Jake Diebler. If not, he said they would have to start over."

For those of you who don't know, Keon Johnson is a T35 6'5 SG in the 2020 class. Tennessee might be the leader, but based on Barnes' recent comments about how he would be in LA if UCLA had picked up his buy-out and given that Keon seems to have a great relationship with Diebler, there might be just enough room for us to get our foot in the door if we're inclined to try.

endless motor needs to take some photography classes.

I also am not seeing a need for Occeus. I have almost all this year's tournament games recorded, so I went back and watched his game vs Kansas, it wasn't pretty. Airballed a 3, was way short on another 3 that was wide open from the top of the key + he was on his heels a bit shooting it, and doesn't seem to contribute much in terms of all-around game. He has good size and is very muscular, but I do not think his game would translate very well to OSU.

to be fair to occeus, he suffered two injuries last year. he missed the first third of the season and then multiple games heading into march. he went from a 79% free throw shooter as a sophomore to 61% as a junior. regardless, even at 100%, there isn't much of a need for occeus, especially since he'll be playing only one season. i'd be shocked if anything materializes here. it would be a shame to lose some steam with the 2020 small forward and shooting guard recruits.

the only way occeus makes any sense to me is if the unexpectedly unfortunate is about to happen with one of our two 2-guards.

between blackmon, etzler, sullinger, and farmer, aor 16u looks like a team to watch. overall, ohio's 2021 class looks pretty strong. meechie johnson, etzler, seth wilson, malaki branham, trey woodyard, farmer, and sullinger are each players that should receiver interest from osu. really hoping jalen sullinger finds a growth spurt.

As someone who doesn't following b-ball recruiting muchl, I was somewhat surprised to see the name Etzler pop-up. Apparently the nephew of former Buckeye captain Doug Etzler.
