OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Seems like we could become a player for Keon Johnson now:

https://vanderbilt.rivals.com/news/where-does-vanderbilt-stand-with-keon-johnson

"Keon Johnson was a top 2020 priority for Bryce Drew. So how can Jerry Stackhouse keep Vanderbilt in the hunt? Johnson said keep Jake Diebler. If not, he said they would have to start over."

For those of you who don't know, Keon Johnson is a T35 6'5 SG in the 2020 class. Tennessee might be the leader, but based on Barnes' recent comments about how he would be in LA if UCLA had picked up his buy-out and given that Keon seems to have a great relationship with Diebler, there might be just enough room for us to get our foot in the door if we're inclined to try.

so far, the three 2020 wings i want the most (excluding highly unlikely wings like boston and barnes):

1. keon johnson
2. donovan johnson
3. elijah wood (no offer, but the tires have been kicked)

co-signed. though I guess for me it looks more like:

dream world: scottie barnes
still dreamy but possible: keon johnson, cam'ron fletcher
i'd take any one of these and be happy: donovan johnson, moses moody, jaylen clark, earl timberlake, ethan morton, elijah wood
eh: che evans, henry coleman, dudley blackwell, justin lewis
why: shawn occeus

2020 recruiting is extremely wide open without any clear direction, but my early money is on hugley being offered and ultimately becoming a buckeye.
florida just offered hugley, along with very recent offers from mizzou, ksu, gt, and pitt. as stated before, i'm seeing some nick ward in hugley and think osu ultimately offers. pairs well with diallo and will absolutely arrive with a college-ready body. may not have the tallest ceiling, but his floor is high.

osu's deadline is approaching. either offer and stay in the game or not offer and get passed up. my guess is we offer in the next couple weeks. i mean, it's not as though hugley to osu is a foregone conclusion anyway. he'll still want to take his officials, and osu will still have time to court other post players. i doubt hugley waits to the fall, though, and i think most of the post players higher on our board will decide after he does.

I knew we were involved but I am honestly surprised we're getting a visit from Justice.
i'll be honestly surprised if we land him. a californian born in hawaii who has played two college seasons in california... moving three time zones away to play his remaining years against teams east of the rockies? don't see it.

then again, he's also considering pitt and seton hall. between those two programs, sdsu, and us, osu certainly has the biggest profile with the most promise. add that our multi-year starting small forward will be gone, and, well...

with nothing else to base this on other than location, my money is still on sdsu, especially if he leaves columbus without a commitment.

With the way the staff had been offering 2020 SFs recently, I kind of figured they didn't think Sueing was a possibility. If he's visiting, he's a possibility.

I like how he attacks the basket, draws fouls, and converts on FTs. Definitely a skill set that would be very useful to add to the roster.

The cons are not sure how "best player on a bad team (in a bad conference, to boot)" numbers translate to the B1G and the fact that if we get Sueing that would seemingly leave us with just 1-2 scholarships for the 2020 class.

As someone who doesn't following b-ball recruiting muchl, I was somewhat surprised to see the name Etzler pop-up. Apparently the nephew of former Buckeye captain Doug Etzler.
yep. fortunately and unsurprisingly, kalen is very much a buckeye fan like his buckeye family. and besides doug, lots of eztlers have played college ball. kid's future is bright. can't be an etzler if you don't have a nice jump shot.
etzler gets osu's first crystal ball (from brian snow) for 2021.

247 profile

really don't have a clue what this might mean, if anything, but it's interesting nonetheless...

pedon just began following nigel john, a 2019 center from texas who was initially committed to washington state until re-opening his recruitment in mid-march (after ernie kent was fired). though john is a 3-star ranked 356th per 247 composite, the compilation below shows a tremendous amount of promise. yeah, most of the competition is severely undersized, but john still showcases good size, good strength, good athleticism, nimble feet, finishes with both hands, finishes over both shoulders, keeps the ball high, a nasty drop-step, and some comfortability with the ball in his hands in the open court. i'll put it this way: if i had to choose between john and diallo for 2019, i'd go with john. but diallo is a buckeye and john is not, so perhaps that's not a fair hypothetical.

john began following each of our coaches not too long ago, though he followed schrage before the elon hire (4/5)... which means he followed the coaches before diallo's commitment (4/14). but, again, pedon just began following him, so... yeah, not sure what to make of that. since everyone is expecting kaleb to return, would the staff consider john as a redshirt? or diallo as a redshirt? or might kaleb actually be a goner? who knows. as stated, all of this probably amounts to nothing at all. nevertheless, it's still odd that pedon would choose to follow a 2019 post player right now.
