OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

interesting twitter "follow" by osu's official basketball account. justin powell is a 6'5" shooting guard (with some point in his game) in the 2020 class. plays for indy heat (furst and hugley). interesting follow because there is much more overlap between him and washington/muhammad/ahrens/jallow than sueing/liddell/gaffney. sure, the staff is wise to kick around the tires no matter the current or expected roster situation, but still... this one's a bit curious.

I thought the staff was still following Burnett and I would think that Powell and him are pretty similar. Maybe Burnett more of a PG than Powell? But both of them can play the #1 and #2 positions…no?

Let's say Kaleb's gone after next season, which seems pretty likely at this point:

If the staff can't get a T50ish big, would you prefer they use the scholarship spot on the best grad transfer big they can get (and you'd think they'd be able to get a really good one unless Diallo looks good enough to scare them off)?

I think some of the reticence with Hugley is the staff not knowing if he's good enough to help a lot as a frosh and knowing that they are probably going to need that.

Seems to me we're in a bit of a bind here unless our chances start looking a lot better for a guy like Kessler or Williams. Dainja's a bit borderline but ultimately I think he's good enough that we could get by fine with him and Diallo in the post for 2020-2021. The question mark gets a lot bigger when you start talking about guys like Dowuona and Hugley, though. Don't know enough about PJ Hall and wonder if we even have a real shot at him at this juncture.

I don't want our 2020 class to be just 1 player or whatever and I doubt the staff does, either, but it could be a really good season and I think if the staff's feeling like Kaleb will be gone before then, they've got a very tricky situation on their hands trying to plan on what to do with the post position. Maybe they "settle" for a less-than-ideal big if they can't get one of their top choices and if another extra scholarship opens up, they look at grad transfer bigs next spring. But it's risky business.

I have a really hard time following basketball recruting like I do football because the numbers in each class and needs are so fluid.

It appears to me that the 2020 class has at least one spot and possibly 2 if KW leaves after next season or there is a transfer. Seems like one of those 2 scenarios will happen. So if it is 2 spots in 2020, then the needs are a big and a wing? The best, realistic big targets being Hugley and Dainja and the best, realistic wing being Keon Johnson?

Just looking for a projection from those in the know for how many guys will be in the 2020 class, the positions needed and the hot names. I can't get my head around this entirely!

So as of right now just 1 scholly, the only way another opens up is if one of the following happens... Kaleb leaves early, someone xfers, one of our young guys has a way better than expected season and bolts early which is possible because some scoring is needed next to Kaleb and I know coach will be searching diligently for someone to fill that role and to me the most likely candidates for this are 1.Duane Washington 2. EJ Liddell 3. Zo Gaffney, to a lesser extent DJ Carton, there are only so many minutes to go around at guard so unless he has a MCJ like post season I don't see him having the opportunity next season. Gaffney might not average a lot of points but let's say he can get to say around 9-10 ppg next season around 6 rebs and 1.3 blks and stays out of foul trouble to me that is our scariest scenario because he is a potential kid if I've ever seen one and that may be enough for him to sneak into the end of round 1 of the draft, he can play backup mins at the 4 and play some small ball 5 at 6'9 so he may get more mins. than anyone is anticipating right now.

All that to say that I would put the chances of at lest one of these things happening at about 60% with and upward arrow as of right now, with a slight chance of more than one of these scenarios taking place

potential potential potential!

I guess Dainja never actually made it to OSU and things are not sounding good in that recruitment.

One step closer to a Hugley offer.
For some reason, I just do not think it is in the cards for Hugley and Ohio State. From what I have read,, he is involved with quite a few schools but not the Buckeyes. Maybe an offer will come later in the evaluation period but for some strange reason he is being slow walked by Holtmann.
