OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

From back in December, good calls

ITs difficult to project what someone might become physically (size/athleticism), but Jones has all the tools you'd want and a good understanding of the game for a PG at his age. Gahanna has put out some good guards/wings in recent history, but from a pure basketball standpoint, this kid could be the best of them. Just hope he grows taller than the Taylor boys.

We just offered 2020 6'8 3-star PF Zed Key.

along with osu, key has received offers from usf, tcu, rhode island, pitt, bc, and vt all within the last few days. now click on key's twitter page. note the number of retweets of announcements and celebrations of osu's offer. now note the number of retweets regarding the recent offers from the other schools.

key's response is obviously a minor data point, but i think it's safe to say that he's going to take osu very seriously, especially when you compare the reputation and projection of osu's program compared to the others. will now watch how quickly a visit to osu is set up, as well as if it's an official. will also note where in line that visit falls in comparison to the other recent programs to offer.

finally, what's curious about key is how similar he is to hugley in height, size, and athleticism. though hugley projects to be more of a face-up frontcourt player and key looks to be slightly more of a conventional post player, they're not strikingly different players despite 247 labeling hugley a center and key a power forward. one could say that hugley being more of a face-up frontcourt player may be what withholds osu from an offer, but that didn't stop them from offering ware.

looks like johnson has been playing with loveday this weekend for wildcat select (pa) in the adidas event (dallas) instead of all-ohio red in atlanta. their teammate jalen bridges (6'7" small forward out wv) has been blowing up (3-star who's a 4-star talent). he's a 2019 recruit who may reclassify to 2020. bridges said osu has been expressing interest, obviously as a 2020 recruit.

like a taller version of ben roderick...

Do you regard these new offers as a bad sign regarding Keon?
no, not as they pertain to johnson. even disregarding the other 2020 wing offers, i'd be surprised if johnson commits to osu. first, tennessee is very hard to beat. he was high on the nearby program (vandy) to start, and my guess is he'll be high on the nearby program (ut) to finish. i'm discounting uva almost completely. second, though johnson is good enough that he'd get immediate playing time no matter the program, the 2020 roster is congested at the 2 and 3. the staff is obviously very interested in signing another wing to that class, but i think it's a tough sell prior to further attrition. perhaps i'd feel differently if the 2020 shooting guards and small forwards weren't primarily juniors and seniors.

all of that being said, osu has diebler and osu has done a good job at wowing blue chip recruits on their officials. get through the next week without crystal balls to osu, though, and i'll continue expecting tennessee to land johnson.

Yeah, Holt casts a very wide net with scholarship offers, so I wouldn't read anything in to each offer. I also am skeptical that there are the makings of a real match between Keon and OSU. To me, this is more of a "I really like one of the coaches, so I will visit there" trip without any intention of him actually picking OSU. OSU has to let a prospect the level of Keon to have an official visit if he wants one, regardless of whether they feel their chances with him are very good.
