OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

what center do you think we have a decent chance of landing in the '20 class? I'd rather have bediako in '21 than any we seem to have a remotely decent chance at in '20 and our chances seem as good or better at landing him than any other big on our radar.

I think there is a big range for what diallo could be, but right now, my career expectations are roughly that of a lauderdale.

whatever chance we have at a 2020 center would likely drastically decrease if the 13th scholarship goes to a wing.

listen, i'm not against taking a 2020 wing. my thinking is this: take keon if you can get him because he is awesome; if you can't land keon, though, then focus singularly on a post player.

when i look at galloway and leal, i don't see players worth the risk of not getting loveday, ware, or key. not when the expectation is that we'll already have muhammad, washington, jallow, ahrens, sueing, liddell, and gaffney. i mean, 4 of those 7 players will be upperclassmen. no offense to the two aforementioned recruits, but 6'4"ish shooting guards and small forwards are a dime-a-dozen. to put it another way, i'd much rather have hugley than galloway or leal.

Oh, we totally agree that I wouldn't add another wing in '20 unless it was a stud. I personally don't understand why we signed Sueing and are still pursuing a wing in that class. and I agree again that I wouldn't take a wing that isn't going to play right away given our scholarship situation.

I think there is a decent chance that Wesson leaves, but its not a forgone conclusion. If he doesn't leave, we don't have a need to sign a big in '20 unless he is of a certain quality (kinda like the argument of taking another wing). I think a decent transfer big (juco or grad) will have more of an impact next year than any of the '20 centers we seem to have any shot at.

I'd take ware over a transfer but he isn't coming here. Have maybe a 30% chance at loveday. I like his potential, but just isn't very strong and is a couple years away from being a contributor at this level. Not sure why you mention key. he's a combo forward, probably more on the pf end and has really dropped in the rankings. Hugley has been improving. I do like his game, good feet and hands, not the greatest athlete, but it seems to be improving. I think he could contribute as a frosh and like him better than any post we seem to have some shot at so not sure why we haven't offered.

you think ho1tmann offered key because coach sees him as another liddell or gaffney? that might make even less sense than taking another wing like sueing, ahrens, or muhammad. key is certainly not a combo forward in the sense that he's a 3/4 or 4/3. much like hugley, he's a power forward who plays a lot in the post with his back to the basket. he's a 4/5. don't really care what either player says about developing into more of an outside-in player. think both want to see themselves as a future omari spellman or tobias harris. both were 4/5's with the ability to step out.

furthermore, rankings schmankings. key was one of the most productive players in the nbpa top 100 camp because he's good. and ho1tmann offered him because he's good.

very much agreed. depending on how the 2020 class resolves itself, hugley has the looks of a player we look back on in a couple years and wonder what could/should have been.

Top 100 Bloomington South prospect...IU.

Well that timing is interesting. Had not seen that one come across. Galloway and Leal are Indiana Elite teammates. Good chance they both end up in Bloomington as the summer winds down, but not finalized.
Leal announces he's down to IU and Stanford. Go ahead and take a wild guess where that one ends up (along with Galloway)...

Not heartbroken over either.

Edit 7/26 update: Trey Galloway to IU.

“I would list myself as a power forward,” Key explained. “In college, I’m not really a center at this height. So I’ve worked on my guard skills and footwork away from the basket.

“I’m definitely not a center.”

If Holtmann is pitching the center position to him, then I don't see much chance of us getting him. 247 has been listing him as a sf/pf.

I won't pretend to know much about his improvement over the summer nor do I believe that scouts always get it right. However, while there have been some complimentary articles on his play, his rankings have dropped. My guess is that its size/skill set related that they don't think will translate at the high major level. They could be wrong. He has a lot of offers from a mix of mid majors and middle tier p5 schools. His senior year is about to start and he has no favorites which seems to indicate that maybe he is waiting on some better offers.

It seems to me that the staff may be waiting until there is clarity with Kaleb before they try in earnest to land a 5 in the 2020 class. I would imagine that negative recruiting rival coaches would be telling any 5 OSU tries to recruit now that the Buckeyes won't play them their first year due to Kaleb. No doubt it is tricky since many highly regarded bigs won't want to be coming off the bench their first year.

Who knows, maybe Kaleb does stay for all 4 years. Kaleb might be OK with playing pro in Europe after next year, but he is a local kid who I'm sure has a deeper love for OSU than some others who didn't grow up with the dream of playing for the Buckeyes.

Plus, you should expect that Diallo will be a contributor to some extent in his second year. So it is not like you can project a wasteland of a position at this point.

All in all, I have faith that this staff will be able to mobilize and find a decent 5 next spring if they need to. The talent on the rest of the roster increasing means they won't really need a star big to still be able to win.

Nothing new in this article regarding Bediako which is not already in his thread. However, I found this little phrase in the article to be somewhat interesting.

The four-star recruit — who is rated as the No. 65 overall player and the No. 9 center in the class — is the ninth player to receive an offer from the Buckeyes.

I wonder who has the nine offers. I am unfamiliar with the author of the article.

Key's game looks like a young David West

How many spots in the cycle and who are we most likely to land?
as of right now, there is one spot available for 2020. assuming that ho1tmann won't oversign, it looks like the last scholarship is on a first-come, first-served basis between wings and post players. the staff appears to be more than happy to take a wing despite the frontcourt being what most would assume is a (much) greater need.

as far as the player osu is most likely to land, well, your guess is as good as any. most vols have already written down keon johnson's name in pencil, with many reaching for the pen. barring a miracle next week, we're probably in the best shape for loveday, though i think everyone would take the field over osu. after loveday, perhaps jalen bridges.

no reason to worry, though. despite being clueless about who the commitment might ultimately be, my guess is we'll get our guy no later than the start of the season. the staff tends to kill on visits and plenty of our targets have yet to see the campus.

Great summary, thank you.

I didn’t realize we had a chance on Loveday....I am glad to hear this.

I bet we sign 2 but I won’t speculate on how that is achieved. A post and a wing.
