OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I think you missed the part about it being "possible" at a school with ohio states brand "over time". people would have laughed at duke being included in the blue blood talk prior to '90s or even thinking it possible.
certainly it's possible. lots of things are possible. it's just that to become what we're not, we have to at least do something we haven't done in almost 60 years. heck, osu would probably have to win 2 titles within the next decade just to make the discussion.

I'll let the discussion get back to recruiting, but by no means do I think its a light undertaking or something to be expected. But its clear its possible to crack the blue blood club as dook did it from a position more tenuous than ours. I'd say there are maybe 20 programs that have a shot at moving into that club and we have an advantage that not many of those programs do.

One last point, 3 teams have won multiple titles in the last 10 years. Two of them aren't blue bloods. I think villanova and connecticut have a difficult time moving into blue blood status as their support is almost entirely confined to their region. One thing osu has going for it is that it already has a national brand. just need to turn some football fans onto basketball.

Just recapping for my own edification:

So the 2020 class will likely be one or two. Guessing a wing and a big? Anyone feel free to correct me here. Moses Moody and Lance Ware visit this weekend. Sounds like Moody is the more likely of the two to be a Buckeye. Jalen Bridges visits 10/5 but the wing spot could be filled by then (hopefully by Moody). Scottie Barnes was supposed to but it seems there has not been much communication there lately. The best big options right now are Zach Loveday, Ryan Kalkbrenner and Zed Key. I know people have been down on Loveday but I would love a two man class of him and Moody to go with our 2019 class (and Justice Sueing).

The 2021 class, which already includes Kalen Etzler and Meechie Johnson, will likely be four and two of the top targets are in-state guys in Malaki Branham and Logan Duncomb. So you'd have a point/combo guard in Johnson, a wing in Branham, a post who can step out in Etzler and a big in Duncomb, assuming that class comes to fruition. Other top 2021 targets are Charles Bediako, Chet Holmgren, Carter Whitt, Max Christie and Caleb Furst. Sounds like there is a possibility the class could get to five and maybe they swing for the fences with that fifth spot on a guy like Holmgren?

all seems about right. moody seems most likely due to friendships with washington and especially liddell. think we're also in a good spot for eugene brown. possible dark horse for henry coleman, though certainly doubtful. agree on loveday. always good to keep the in-state guys in the state. i do think we end up getting loveday, but indiana and ttun are going to be tough competitors. i'd put louisville and purdue as the top competition for loveday, but i think they ultimately receive commitments from guys higher up on their boards.

as far as 2021 goes, we're currently over the limit at 14 scholarships if you assume ho1tmann will add a 2020 wing, 2020 post, 2021 wing, and a 2021 post to a roster that sees no attrition. obviously easy to see some attrition, though. if we go to a 5-player class for 2021, then i think that fifth player will be added very late in the process.

also, rather than going 5-deep for 2021, my guess is that ho1tmann would prefer to go with either a sit-one transfer (available for 2021) if the 2020 scholarship situation allows for it or a 2021 grad transfer point guard. if carton leaves early after the second season, then a 5-player 2021 class pretty much means you're relying on two true-freshman point guards for the 2021-22 season. can't see that being the plan, especially since ho1tmann has stated that he foresees the program regularly going the transfer route (as with walker and sueing).

finally, ohio's 2022 class is so deep (especially in the backcourt) that the staff may not want to expand the 2021 class to 5. who knows how 2022 turns out in respect to osu's scholarship situation, but i'd rather see osu go 4 for 2021 and 4 for 2022 than 5 and then 3.

will be a little surprised if hardman is not the next 2022 offer. the staff is on him like white on rice. though the competition for him will be fierce (the blue bloods are coming), at least his parents are solid buckeye football fans.

Bowen Hardman talks visits and offer
...

At around 6-foot-3 with good athleticism and deep range on his jumper, Hardman has seen his stock soar in the eyes of college coaches, and he used the fall to make numerous unofficial visits.

“I’ve been to Cincinnati, Ohio State, Xavier, Ohio University and Purdue,” said Hardman.

...

Also, Hardman had a chance to visit Ohio State. He checked in with Chris Holtmann and the staff in Columbus and liked what he saw.

“It was a great visit,” said Hardman of Ohio State. “Coach Holtmann and Coach (Ryan) Pedon were really cool, and obviously they have a great program with great tradition, so it was good to see them.”

Expect Hardman to take his time with the recruiting process. More offers and interest should begin coming his way soon, and it is likely that he is one of the most heavily sought-after prospects in the state of Ohio in the class of 2022.

here's a theoretical tough call:

if we're feeling pretty good about Moses Moody, who still has a bunch of official visits left to some big-name programs, yet after his visit next weekend Eugene Brown wants to commit to OSU, should we take Brown or should we try to hold him off?

sounds like he may enroll immediately. maybe that's the reason for today's commitment despite only recently announcing a top 5 with multiple upcoming visits. perhaps we'll face him in december.
bridges is enrolling immediately. assuming he doesn't redshirt, which he probably won't due to wvu's massive turnover and their shallow depth at the small forward position, we'll see him in december.

edit: sounds like wvu's plan as of right now is to redshirt him.
