OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

if osu finds itself in a spot next season where gage, porter, or another grad-transfer guard matters all that much, the spot we'll find ourselves in won't exactly be a good one. we shouldn't be relying on such a grad transfer like we did with dakich. no offense to gage or porter, but we just need someone for practice and as a fail-safe. i expect that walker and washington will fill 90%+ of the point-guard minutes -- at least in terms of those minutes that are meaningful.

I think Gage is a much better play than Dakich was and not even in the same ball park. He was a solid starter when he was healthy at a Big East school, I’d expect him to play at least 10 min a game and put up like 5/2/2 type performances while guarding the teams best guard.

If God forbid for any reason CJ is out of action, Gage is the type of guy you want to have to fill those shoes. And like you said, he can be productive even just coming off the bench.

i'd have fewer expectations about a career 28% shooter from three whose season ended because of a dominant-hand injury that required surgery.

furthermore, if gage is getting at least 10 minutes per game, then he's squeezing out minutes from washington and our numerous wings. if you want more players concerned about their roles and their minutes, then that's the way to go.

understand that there is a reason our staff is now going after guys who are the mend after not being substantial or consistent scorers. we're looking for a fail-safe that won't upset the guys already on our roster. i mean, what do you think it means that the program is seriously reaching out to abel porter? he's a guy who most usu fans thought was going to hang up his jersey for good after last season, largely because of his back injury.

To be clear, you are in favor of having a second point guard added to the team, right? No major college program in America is going to go into a season planning on having one lead guard with no real backup.

Shannon Scott shot the same percentage here and while no he wasn’t amazing he was effective in playing hard and being a great defender. The injuries like you mentioned are a big concern but why not take a guy like cage who has a little more to give than porter if healthy. I don’t really see it taking minutes away from Washington as I see it taking minutes away from guys like Musa and Ahrens.

Gage's real worth for OSU would be as a defender. We don't have a lot of options to put on quick opponent guards. By virtue of that and back-up PG minutes, Gage could actually end up playing about 20 mpg.

Porter would be fine but we'd probably be minimizing his minutes as much as possible.

porter's commitment shows how the staff already thought of the point guard situation for next year. ho1tmann isn't looking for someone to get major minutes -- or, for that matter, anything more than minor minutes. he's not looking for someone to upset team chemistry and morale. porter is a fail-safe.

of course, porter's commitment also shows that kaleb is gone. otherwise, we're soon to receive another unexpected departure.

Porter it is. Obviously, OSU had to have a somewhat competent backup PG. Standing pat with no guarantee of having a backup was not an option. I'm not saying Porter is particularly good, but he helps fill a hole in the roster, not completely unlike the way Dakich did for the 2017-18 season, and of course he is a better player than Dakich.

One thing I think we are seeing with Holt's moves in adding these last few transfers is they are going after guys who seem to be a match from a mental standpoint - they understand the game and help the whole be greater than the sum of the parts.
