The Big Ten Tournament is this weekend. Here’s recap of round 1.

As a refresher, the participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

2nd Round

The Buckeyes got solid performances from Will Grimmer and Josh Wick. The youth played well in the opening round. By the end of the round, the team score of 296 (+8) and maintained their position in 9th place. They are 5 strokes behind Northwestern (might be able to catch them) and 8 strokes in front of Indiana (not like to be caught from behind).

The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 71 (-1) and Will Grimmer 73 (+1). Josh Wick 75 (+3) and Clark Engle 77 (+5) finished the team scoring. Grant Weaver shot an 81 (+9).

The Buckeyes, teeing off on #10, had a very solid team score of +2 on their opening 9 holes. However, on their back nine, 1 more double bogey and 2 fewer birdies bumped up the back 9 total. See, it doesn’t take much, possibly 3 bad swings/bounces to have an impact on a round. It happens.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 298 296 0 594
Will Grimmer 70 73 0 143
Tee-k Kelly 76 71 0 147
Clark Engle 79 77 0 156
Josh Wick 74 75 0 149
Grant Weaver 78 81 0 159
To Par 10 8 0 0

Tee-K birdied his 6th and 7th holes to go to -2 for his first nine holes, stumbled with double bogey on his 12th hole. He closed out strong with a birdie on his last hole to cap a closing 6 hole stretch of -1. Great golf.

Will was kind of “OK” at +2 through his first 5 holes. Then, wow. He played the final 13 holes in -1 for a very strong finish. Nice work.

Josh carded 4 birdies, but 2 doubles dulled his round. He did birdie 2 of his last three holes, so hopefully some momentum was built for Sunday.

Clark strung together a total of 14 pars for the day, but his 2 double bogeys really stalled his round.

Grant got into trouble on his opening nine holes, shooting +7. However, he did respond with 3 birdies on the back nine to shoot +2 for that span. For the second consecutive round, he did finish with a birdie on his last hole.

This actually wasn’t that bad of a round. They were probably only 3-4 swings from having very solid round and being 1-2 spots higher. They are positioned to make a move up 2 positions, but they need to avoid the “big numbers”. Not profound, but factual. Tee-K, Will and Josh are putting together a good showing. They need a 4th player to step up on Sunday.

The Buckeyes put together a round of 16 birdies (5 more than 1st round), 49 pars, 17 bogeys and 8 double bogeys.

Over two rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.30, 12 over par, ranking T-9th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,28, +28 to par, ranking them 9th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.85, -6 to par, ranking them T-3rd.

Ohio State had 105 pars, ranking them 10th and 27 birdies.

On to the 3rd and final round…

Go Buckeyes!
