Despite a disappointing end to the regular season that saw them drop their final two games, losing the Big Ten regular season title in the process, the Ohio State women’s basketball team has some stuff to celebrate as the Big Ten announced its annual award winners which saw five Buckeyes honored. (Above image courtesy of Ohio State athletics)

Sophomore guard Kelsey Mitchell and senior guard Ameryst Alston were named to the All-Big Ten first team by the coaches and the media while sophomore forward Alexa Hart and junior forward Shayla Cooper were named to the second team by the media; Hart and Cooper received honorable mention honors by the coaches. These awards mean that Ohio State has now had a player named first team All-Big Ten for 12 consecutive seasons, the longest streak in the conference!

This is the third straight year that Ameryst Alston has been named first team All-Big Ten, making her the fifth Buckeye to have received that honor; she joins a list that is made of up legendary OSU players Katie Smith, Tracey Hall, Jessica Davenport, and Jantel Lavender. This adds to Alston’s honors this season which also include her being named National and Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of February 15th and moving into fourth place on OSU’s all-time scoring list.

Kelsey Mitchell was one of three players to be named to the first team by every coach and voting media member this season, making her just the 5th Buckeye to be a unanimous first team choice. This is Mitchell’s second first team selection and she earned it by being fourth in the country in scoring at 25.3 points per game and second in three point baskets made with 105 (shooting at a 40.2% pace from outside). Mitchell was named National and Big Ten player of the week twice this season and set the new OSU single game scoring record with 48 points in the regular season ending loss at Michigan State.

In addition to being named second team All-Big Ten by the media and honorable mention by the coaches, Alexa Hart was named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team by the coaches, the media doesn’t choose a defensive team. Hart was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team last season.

Shayla Cooper’s second team selection by the media and honorable mention by the coaches are her first All-Big Ten honors. She also made a strong argument to be picked for the Big Ten’s Sixth Player of the Year award but was overlooked despite averaging 13.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while coming off the bench.

The fifth Ohio State honoree is senior guard Cait Craft who was named OSU’s Big Ten Women’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award winner.
