P Andy Groom (National Champion)

Here's hoping that Andy makes the grade with someone good this year. Going head to head with Tupa was a push in Tampa. Getting sidelined by Lee in SF then hung out to dry till after other teams rosters gelled -- waste of a year.

Punters do seem to get zero respect or attention until a team needs one. Then they prefer the devil they (or the devil someone else knows) to the new kid on the NFL block.

Hang in there Andy and your Hang times will finally wow someone who respects ST/KT play.

I tried to follow Andy in the NFL and thought it would be tough to get in with Tampa with "the iron man" Tom Tupa. But SF hosed him. Kind of makes me enjoy the season they had this past year. Hang in there Andy, someone will see the light and pick you up.

Andy Groom signs with Redskins

Can't believe this guy hasn't caught on in the NFL yet.

The Washington Redskins signed punter Andy Groom yesterday after releasing wide receiver Gari Scott. Groom originally signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003 as an undrafted free agent from Ohio State. He set the school's record for punt average, at 45 yards, by breaking the old mark by Tom Tupa -- who is coming off a strong 2004 season in Washington.</NITF></NITF>

Looks like he's getting a shot to replace Tupa.

The fact that Tom Tupa Makes 1.4 Million should definetly help Andy's chances.

Andy's problem has been that everytime he tries out, he keeps competing against a solid returning veteran. Andy could easily get a position in the NFL, but he's just not drawing interest from the teams that would provide him the best opportunity to make the 53-man roster.

Tupa was also a QB, so many teams want to keep him both because he's still a quality punter, and can occupy 3rd on the depth chart at the QB position. With Tupa, you're getting two position players in one for under $1.5 million, have a punter who can throw a spiral on gadget plays, and is an established, respected veteran in the league.

Andy is just one of dozens of different quality punters who have had the misfortune of signing with a team that's bringing in Tupa.

Regardless ... good luck Andy!

I so wish the Browns would have taken a look at him. He would be so much better than Frost and his 6 yard punts.
You beat me to it. i was about to say the exact same thing. i sure wish the Brownies would have picked Andy up after they let Gardocki go.
Instead, they get "The Shankmaster"

Hey, "Der Shankmeister" was B.J. Sander's nickname I gave him before the 2003 season (along with "The Sultan of Shank" and "Sir Shanks-a-lot"). Thankfully I was wrong as could be...

Frost has a solid strategy: shank this punt, so the other team scores a quick touchdown, kicks off, and before I know it, I'm back in the game. Only 1-2 minutes have gone by. If I boot it way down field, the other team won't score for 3-4 minutes.
