No Aussie Does it Better than Cameron Johnston

It wasn’t the best day for Australian punters in Big Ten country.

Saturday featured the botched punt heard round the nation for Michigan, where fifth-year senior Blake O’Neill bobbled the snap and tried to kick the ball away before fumbling it for a game-losing play against rivals Michigan State.

“I have heard about it,” Ohio State’s Aussie punter, Cameron Johnston said after the Buckeyes’ 38-10 win over Penn State. “He was just trying to make a play and it’s unfortunate. But he’ll get it right. He’s had a really good year as well.”

Johnston hadn’t seen the play during the postgame interviews, but he did watch fellow Australian native Daniel Pasquariello have a fairly poor day for the Nittany Lions.

After starter, redshirt sophomore Chris Gulla’s first four punts averaged just 36.2 yards and didn’t pin the Scarlet and Gray deep, Pasquariello replaced him. The Australian wasn’t much better, averaging less than 36 yards with a long punt of 47 yards.

This prompted Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin to state his program might need to search campus for another replacement.

“We’ve had major issues for two years with punting the ball,” Franklin said postgame. “The way we need to play right now, which is play great on defense and find ways to grind it out on offense and play field position, we haven’t been able to do that for two years. If we need to have open tryouts we’re going to have to find a way to solve that problem.”

We have had a few good punters, but have we ever had a better punter than Johnston? When we have to punt, I never worry and it is almost like anticipating a big hit from a DB or something on a receiver coming over the middle, you just know he is going to nail it and pin them deep. And then there is the coverage that is always outstanding as well. Urbs knows specials.

If you look at his punts knowing that his goal is to drop it on the 7 it is even more impressive. We've had plenty of punters with monster legs, but I don't know if I've ever seen one with this much control.

Urb always says he forgives mistakes if caused by aggressiveness
Cam would have been forgiven plus he could have come close to scoring...
as someone else posted... "only thing between Cameron and Columbus was the goal line"

Last game Cam punted about 3 feet away from the first down marker with nothing but open space ahead of him. Let the man run the ball if it's there!

The last thing I want Cam thinking about is "Can I make the 1st?" Anyway I'm sure they are playing the long game and will break out the fake punt at some point later this season. Everyone that watches this film now knows that Cam will punt the ball even if he is 5 yards from the first down with nobody within 20 yards of him. You don't really want to waste that one on Illinois.
