Marion Local's Luebke becomes leader on mound for OSU
Jim Naveau | [email protected]
- 04.28.2007

COLUMBUS ? The Cape Cod summer baseball league, where Ohio State?s Cory Luebke pitched last year, has long been a training ground for major leaguers. If his time on the mound in Cape Cod helped push him toward professional baseball, the Marion Local High School graduate isn?t talking about it. But it certainly helped him put together his best season yet at Ohio State.
The junior lefthander has a 6-0 record with a 1.84 earned run average and has taken over the No.1 spot in the Buckeyes? rotation after former No. 1 Dan DeLucia underwent season-ending elbow surgery recently.

Luebke passes up 'show' for OSU

Mark Silverman
Issue date: 5/9/07

Ohio State junior left-hander Cory Luebke has been on the radar of MLB scouts since he stepped foot in Bill Davis Stadium. Luebke, 22, was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2006 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers, but made the decision to return to OSU.

"Coming back gave me the opportunity to try and raise my stock," Luebke said. "I learned a lot over the summer and I thought if I applied that to an entire season it would pay off for me."

In his most recent outing against Michigan State Friday night, Luebke was superb and showed why he is one of the most coveted professional prospects on the OSU baseball team. The southpaw pitched 6 and two-thirds innings, surrendering five hits and two earned runs, while striking out nine. Earning the victory, Luebke improved to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten play. Junior outfielder Matt Angle said he believes Luebke's success can be credited to his work ethic.

Cory Luebke named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Five other Buckeyes honored

Eric Fryer named second team All-Big Ten, Matt Angle, J.B. Shuck and Justin Miller third team picks

May 22, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State junior left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke was named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year today when the conference announced its All-conference teams and individual awards.
Luebke, one of three unanimous first team picks, is the fifth Buckeye to be honored as the conference's top pitcher and the first to win the award since Scott Lewis took home the honors in 2003. In all games this year, the Maria Stein, Ohio (Marion Local) native led the Big Ten in ERA (1.94 ERA), strikeouts (83) and innings pitched (93), while holding his opponents to a stingy .215 batting average. The Big Ten's 2007 strikeout king, Luebke fanned 50 batters through 56.1 innings of work in the conference season while walking just 24 batters. Overall this season, the left-hander recorded a WHIP (walks-plus-hits-per-innings pitched) of 1.06 and struck out an average of eight batters per nine innings while putting together a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 3.45. Luebke finished the regular season with a 7-1 overall record and went 3-1 in conference. His seven wins were tied for first in the league.
Four other Buckeyes were honored as All-conference selections. Catcher Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) was named second team All-Big Ten and outfielders Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) and J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion), and first baseman Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) were third team selections. Senior Jacob Howell (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was Ohio State's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Yep. The scouts were talking about pitcher they missed out on today while they were looking at the college kids. They should've picked Cory instead of the Canadian kid. San Diego has got some kick ass prospects in their system in the last 3 years. I guess that would be why their MLB rotation leads witha 2.22 ERA. Sickening.

So, will he skip his Senior season? I think if he came back, he could go higher. But baseball isn't like basketball and football, I don't think you improve your draft status by staying in college.
