PADRES NOTES: Luebke goes on the disabled list
DAN HAYES [email protected]

SAN DIEGO ---- The Padres want to ensure Cory Luebke is completely healthy the next time he takes the mound. So instead of rushing his return and risking further injury, the club opted to place Luebke on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday afternoon with a left elbow strain.

Luebke, who is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five starts, is the third Padres starting pitcher to go on the DL this season.

Kyle Blanks was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Luebke's replacement, Jeff Suppan.

Luebke was placed on the DL retroactive to April 28, making him eligible to return on May 13.

"He wasn't going to make this start," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Moving forward, thinking about the next start, we want to make sure it resolves itself. This gives us that opportunity so he feels confident of his return with no limitations. That's the direction we've decided to take."

Luebke may be facing elbow surgery
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 05/05/12

SAN DIEGO -- Padres pitcher Cory Luebke won't be returning from the disabled list anytime soon and could be headed toward surgery on his left elbow.

San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes said on Friday that Luebke -- on the DL with a strained elbow -- would meet with the Padres' doctors to get a better idea of what the next step will be, presumably rest and rehabilitation or surgery.

Luebke had an MRI exam on Wednesday. The team was off on Thursday.

PADRES NOTES: Luebke hopes elbow injury not serious

SAN DIEGO ---- Cory Luebke said Saturday he's hopeful that, when the swelling subsides, the ligament in his left elbow won't show severe damage. But the Padres' young ace admits he also has started to think about the possibility he could undergo elbow surgery and miss a full season.

Luebke said he and the Padres haven't determined a course of action because swelling and fluid in the region has prevented them from getting a proper read on Wednesday's MRI.

The left-hander, who is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five starts, also said part of his frustration stems from an MRI taken in March when he signed his contract extension that showed his elbow was healthy.

"Everything came back great," Luebke said. "There wasn't anything wrong with my arm. I guess that was the main part of the frustrating thing. It's one of those injuries where you never know when it's going to come up and bite you.

Luebke debating elbow surgery
By Sarah Trotto / Special to MLB.com | 05/16/12

SAN DIEGO -- Padres starting pitcher Cory Luebke said a doctor's exam showed a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, and he is deciding whether to undergo surgery or try pitching with the tear.

Luebke said he will reach a decision soon, possibly in a few days. He is two weeks into a possible six-week rehabilitation period if he opts to try pitching with the partial tear.

"We're trying to weigh our options and make the right decision," Luebke said.

If Luebke continues to rehab and he is unable to pitch with the tear, he acknowledged he would feel those several weeks were "wasted" because that would push back his return next season from possible Tommy John surgery. Recovery from that surgery typically takes a year. He has been on the disabled list since May 2, retroactive to April 28.

"Every day I miss now is a day next season," Luebke said. "The thought of risking six, seven, eight weeks here trying to get ready for this season is scary for me. That's six to eight weeks of next season you've got to take off from the get-go."

Luebke visited specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum last week for a second opinion, and the exam confirmed the partial tear. The decision whether to have surgery or wait and try to pitch is a group decision, Luebke said.

"You've got to explore all the options, and if it comes down to the two options of surgery or no surgery, you've got to make sure you're all in when you decide which way to go," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Cory is working through a big decision. His case is not clear cut."

Luebke said nearing decision to have surgery
Written by

May 20, 2012

Padres manager Bud Black said Sunday that left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke could have elbow reconstruction surgery by the end of the week.

?I think Cory is leaning strongly toward having the surgery, possibly as soon as later this week,? said Black. ?When he adds everything up, all the opinions, this is the (course) of action.

?It?s a very tough decision.?

And one that the manager and former pitcher and pitching coach supports.

?In my opinion, the surgery is the right thing to do at this point,? Black said after the Padres? 13-inning, 3-2 win over the Angels at Petco Park.

Luebke was not at Petco Park Sunday to confirm Black?s assessment.

Black made his remarks moments after the Padres announced that Luebke was being transferred from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list to open a spot for right-handed reliever Matt Palmer on the 40-man roster.

Luebke has been on the disabled list since making his last start at San Francisco on April 27. At first, Luebke?s problem was listed as elbow tightness. But a subsequent MRI revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament ? which is repaired via a ligament transplant in a procedure called ?Tommy John surgery.?

After that MRI, Luebke said ?Tommy John surgery? and extended rehabilitation were his only options. And if the rehab failed, Luebke would then need the surgery six to eight weeks from now ? pushing back his return in 2013. The 27-year-old pitcher has been getting more expert opinions over the past two weeks.

Even if he has the surgery now, Luebke won?t pitch again until early next season.

Cory Luebke (elbow) out for season
Updated: May 21, 2012
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Padres starter Cory Luebke says he'll have reconstructive surgery on his left elbow.

The operation will be performed Wednesday by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles.

Luebke said during a conference call with reporters Monday that he has a significant tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. The left-hander says he could return in mid-May next year.

Luebke was 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA when he went on the 15-day disabled list May 2.

Luebke wise to have opted for surgery
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 05/24/12

NEW YORK -- It turns out that pitcher Cory Luebke was wise to opt for surgery on his left elbow instead of trying to rest it and rehabilitate it.

That was the opinion of noted orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed surgery on Wednesday in Los Angeles to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in Luebke's left elbow.

"Dr. Yocum got back to our medical people and said once he got into the joint and looked at the ligament, that it was damaged," Padres manager Bud Black said Thursday. "He thought that Cory made the right decision."

Luebke had been weighing two options after landing on the disabled list after a start on April 27 against the Giants: have reconstructive surgery on the elbow, or rest it and rehabilitate it with a possible return to the mound sometime in August.

Luebke opted for surgery after consulting a host of people, including the Padres' medical staff and several players who have previously had the same surgery.

"We looked at rehab choices, but there was no chance of me making a start until mid-August," Luebke said on Monday. "After talking to some of the doctors and people who have been through it, we knew the ligament wasn't going to heal itself.

"It was going to be a battle to pitch through, and that was something I didn't want to go through."

Luebke nearing important hurdle in rehab
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 08/08/12

SAN DIEGO -- Pitcher Cory Luebke, on the disabled list since April after having Tommy John surgery, is nearing an important step in his rehabilitation from season-ending surgery to his left elbow.

Luebke, 11 weeks removed from surgery, will begin a strength program next week that is designed to build upper-body strength, including in the elbow itself.

"We're to the point now where we're starting to get a little more aggressive with the strength stuff," Luebke said. "Up to now, we've done a lot of the same stuff. But in the 12th week is where you begin working your upper body and elbow."

Up to this point, Luebke has done a lot of mobility exercises and stretching. He's encouraged that his elbow mobility is where it should be. Now comes another chapter in his rehabilitation.

"The next step is where you start to crank it up," he said. "But so far, everything has gone well."

At the time of his injury, Luebke was 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five starts. He threw his last pitch on April 27 against the Giants. He'll likely miss the first half of the 2013 season.

Luebke, Wieland prepared for long road to recovery
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 09/11/12

SAN DIEGO -- Rehabilitation from major surgery can be a slow, tedious and monotonous process, but at least now, Padres pitcher Cory Luebke has a date on the calendar worth circling.

"The first of November, I can start throwing the ball around," Luebke said Tuesday.

Luebke, who was being counted on to be a steady force in the rotation this season, is approaching the four-month anniversary of the surgery he had to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

"It's the little things that keep things from getting too stale," Luebke said.

Luebke said he's been doing some light work with weights without many restrictions. He'll continue his rehabilitation here in San Diego in the offseason, after closing on a house last week.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland, who had the same surgery in July, recently began to incorporate the use of tubing in his rehabilitation program to promote flexibility and stretching.

Wieland is expecting to be able to throw a baseball -- playing catch, no more -- right about the first of the year. For now, like Luebke, he's setting his sights on the small victories.

"Next week, I can start jogging," said Wieland, who admitted he's never looked forward to jogging as much as he does now.

Both players won't be ready for the start of Spring Training in February or the regular season on April 1, but figure to pitch sometime during the 2013 season.

Luebke recovering well from arm injury
2012-10-16_6_full.jpg

The recovery from Tommy John surgery can be a grueling process, but it has gone well thus far for Cory Luebke.
The San Diego Padres' left-handed pitcher has been working hard after the surgery to replace the Ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and his recovery has been steady.
"We had another good exam right before the season was over," said Luebke via telephone on Monday from San Diego. "Strength-wise, they thought I was beyond where I needed to be. They told me to take it easy for a week or two and recharge the batteries. Things felt good, so they wanted to give me a break."
Luebke had a record of 3-1 with a 2.61 earned run average for the Padres before experiencing pain in his left elbow. Tests showed that his UCL had split in the middle. After weighing his options, Luebke chose to have the surgery in late May.
The surgery, performed at the Kerian-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles, placed a new tendon in his elbow. The normal recovery process called for working to keep strength in the upper body, with no throwing for at least 16 weeks. "The first six to eight weeks, all we worked on is mobility," said Luebke. "Just light movements to gain all the mobility. ... They say you find out if the surgery is successful if you gain full mobility back in those first 6-8 weeks. The second is when you start throwing hard again and it comes out the same (as before the surgery).
"It was good to get past that step (full mobility) without having any hiccups or anything. We're almost into the normal type of strength and weight lifting. The last part of the process is being able to throw the ball. Last few weeks, I've been able to do some stuff. So far, it's all good."

Luebke not throwing, but rehab is still on schedule
By Bill Center
March 10, 2013

PEORIA, Ariz. ? Cory Luebke knows he will be returning to the Padres one day.

The left-handed pitcher just doesn?t know when.

Luebke has been in baseball?s version of exile since last May 25 when a potentially brilliant season ended abruptly for ?Tommy John? elbow reconstruction surgery.

?All my life, I?ve played baseball in the spring, well, for as long as I can remember,? Luebke said last week. ?At this time of the year, I?ve always been preparing for Opening Day.?

But at this moment, Luebke is preparing for mid-June, or the All-Star break, or the end of July, or . . .

No one knows for sure when Luebke will be ready to pitch again. ?They say it could be 12, 16, 18 months,? said Luebke.

At the moment, the 28-year-old isn?t even throwing. He was throwing up until two weeks ago when he felt pain in his surgically reconstructed right elbow. The Padres immediately shut him down. Reports from two leading physicians in the field were positive. But it will be another week or more before Luebke resumes a throwing program.

This doesn?t necessarily mean his return to the Padres rotation will be delayed.

Luebke?s rehab program is still inside the parameters of the rehab protocol for elbow reconstruction surgery.

?There are bumps in the road,? Luebke said while discussing the lengthy rehab from ?Tommy John? surgery. ?The bumps are sort of built into the timetable. I was really doing well, bump.?

Luebke is still looking to return ?in that 12-month window.?

?I?m not off that 12-month timetable,? said Luebke. ?I didn?t hear the 16 or 18-month part. I?m looking to resume throwing.

Luebke to resume throwing after camp breaks
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 03/23/2013

PEORIA, Ariz. -- When the Padres break camp next week and head to New York to open the season against the Mets, pitcher Cory Luebke will head back to San Diego.

Luebke, who had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in May, hasn't played catch in about three weeks, though the left-hander isn't viewing it as much of a setback.

"I think we're going to start again next week when I get back to San Diego, I think they're going to revise my throwing program," Luebke said.

Luebke said he'll likely visit team physician Dr. Heinz Hoenecke first to make sure he is clear to resume his throwing program.

"We're giving it a little rest," Luebke said. "It feels good but I've been throwing since November, three times a week. So we're giving it a little time to cool off."

Luebke said that his recent inactivity shouldn't affect his bottom line in terms of when he will be able to pitch in a game again.

"When you look at the protocol, the first 10 1/2 months are pretty set, but after that ... in some cases, it takes guys 12 months and some guys it takes 14 or 16 months."

Until he's told otherwise, Luebke is working under the assumption that he'll be able to pitch sometime this season -- whether that be June or possibly later.

"I would be pretty upset if I didn't," Luebke said. "But that hasn't even crossed my mind yet."

Luebke working his way back to majors
While the San Diego Padres opened the 2013 Major League Baseball season at Citi Field in New York against the Mets, Cory Luebke was in San Diego continuing his rehabilitation to get back to pitching in the majors.
After missing most of the 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery to repair his pitching elbow last May, the Padres' left-handed pitcher and Maria Stein native is going through the rehab process of getting his arm back to full strength.
The road back to baseball has been slowed after Luebke felt some pain in his elbow during Spring Training at the Padres' complex in Peoria, Ariz., in early March. The doctors found inflammation and shut down the throwing part of the rehabilitation for four to six weeks.
In a telephone interview Wednesday night, Luebke said he has been cleared to start throwing this week.
"We had to go back a little in the throwing program. We're starting at 60 feet this week," said Luebke, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list on March 31. "But it's a process that will pick up quick. Sooner or later, we'll get back on the mound in a month or later."
While it was a setback, it's something that is built into the 12-18 month recovery period for Tommy John surgeries.
"It's never a good thing, but the good part is when I started throwing, most - almost all - of the pain was gone," said Luebke. "The actual protocol (of the recovery) is 11 months, and they build in time (for setbacks). They still tell you 12-18 months just because most guys just fall into that time frame. Obviously, I was hopeful, and the team was hopeful, I would fall into that 12 months, but my arm had other plans.

After six weeks of inactivity, Luebke playing catch
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 4/9/2013

SAN DIEGO -- Pitcher Cory Luebke, who had reconstructive surgery on his left elbow last May, has been playing catch for the last week.

This is a far cry from where Luebke has been, as he was shut down from playing catch for six weeks this spring because of soreness.

"We're happy with it now. ? I'm happy with it," Luebke said Tuesday.

The six weeks of inactivity might not actually change Luebke's timeline for returning to pitching for the Padres -- mostly because there's no exact timeline for pitchers coming off Tommy John surgery. Some take a year, some take 14, 16 months.

Luebke doesn't seem concerned about it and has vowed that he will pitch for the Padres this season. He started playing catch from 60 feet on April 1 and has advanced to 75 feet.

Luebke will continue that throwing program until he advances to the point where the team is comfortable with him doing more and can send him on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment.
