Padres lefty Cory Luebke has suffered a setback in his quest to return from Tommy John surgery, stopping his throwing program for the second time in 2013 according to MLB.com?s Corey Brock. Luebke posted a 2.61 ERA in five starts last year before landing on the DL in late April and undergoing TJ surgery in late May.

Luebke showed promise when the Padres moved him from the bullpen to the rotation in 2011 at the end of June, posting a 3.31 ERA in 17 starts. He was expected to be a big part of the Padre rotation until the injury setback. Unfortunately, they will have to wait even longer to see the 28-year-old in action.

Padres Mailbag: Luebke return delayed

Although few of you seem to like the Padres starting rotation as it is currently contoured, several readers this past week questioned the wisdom of trading prospects for a rental pitcher with starters Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland returning from the disabled list.

Others wondered who might be the top pitchers on the Padres wish list.

Well, the Padres are probably wishing that the left-handed Luebke would be farther along in his rehab than he is.

Originally, the Padres were hoping that Luebke, who had ?Tommy John? elbow reconstruction surgery on May 23, 2012, would be ready to return by around July 1. That is now looking more like Sept. 1.

Wieland might return before Luebke, although he had his surgery six weeks after Luebke. The Padres believe Wieland might be back by Aug. 15.

While Wieland?s rehab has gone without a hitch, Luebke has twice been shut down due to discomfort in his left elbow as he was close to getting back on the mound. Currently, Luebke is throwing from flat ground at 75 feet.

Luebke?s delays are not out of the parameters for rehabbing from ?Tommy John? surgery and famed Alabama orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews has assured Luebke and the Padres that everything looks good in the elbow.

But the time period for returning from ?Tommy John? surgery is 12 months to 18 months.

?Joe looks more like a 12-monther,? said Luebke. ?I?m just hoping it won?t be a full 18 months for me. Dr. Andrews showed me a list of the pitchers who did need 18 months. Some pretty impressive names on the list.?

Luebke hopeful for return to Padres this season
By Corey Brock and Jamal Collier / MLB.com | 7/10/2013

SAN DIEGO -- Time might be working against him, but Padres left-hander Cory Luebke said he is still holding out hope he will pitch in a big league game this season.

But Luebke, who had reconstructive surgery on his left elbow in May 2012, has learned an important lesson during a rehabilitation that has included two periods where his throwing program was halted.

"First, it looked like May, then July ? I don't want to jinx it again," Luebke said.

Luebke is back throwing again after several stops-and-starts during his rehabilitation. He's currently at 120 feet, working up from 60, 90 to 120 feet with 150 feet still to go before he can return to a mound.

"It feels better," Luebke said of the elbow. "We're being a little more cautious, making sure that I don't push it."

The return timeframe for pitchers who have had Tommy John surgery ranges between 12 and 18 months. Because no two cases are alike, those estimates are exactly just that -- estimates.

The Padres have mapped out a rough plan for Luebke that could have him throwing in a game in late August or early September if he hits all of his rehabilitation marks.

"I hope like heck I can," Luebke said, when asked if he'll pitch in a game this season.

He said for now he's not going to worry about the particulars of where and when he will make his return.

"I'm to the point where we'll about that later," Luebke said.

Pregame: Luebke, Wieland unlikely in '13
By Bill Center
July 25, 2013

MILWAUKEE, Wis. ? Pitchers Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland probably won?t pitch for the Padres during the 2013 season.

Padres manager Bud Black made that assessment Thursday morning as his club prepared to conclude a four-game series against the Brewers with an afternoon game at Miller Park (11:10 a.m. in San Diego).

?It?s unlikely that we will see them in a major league game this season,? Black said of Luebke and Wieland, who are both rehabbing from ?Tommy John? elbow reconstruction surgery

Both have suffered not-unexpected setbacks during their rehab.

The left-handed Luebke twice had his throwing program halted this season when he experienced discomfort in his elbow. Luekbe is again throwing from a slope.

Luebke throws first bullpen session since last May
By Jamal Collier / MLB.com | 8/6/2013

SAN DIEGO -- Left-hander Cory Luebke threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, his first since having reconstructive elbow surgery in May 2012.

Luebke threw around 25 pitches, watched intently by Padres manger Bud Black, who was happy to report that Luebke finished pain-free.

"He looked good and felt fine, so that's a great sign," Black said. "There's been a couple setbacks along the way and that happens, and today was a good sign. It's just another little step, there's still a lot of ground to cover."

This small milestone comes after Luebke experienced a pair of hitches in his recovery. Early in the season, he had his first attempt at a throwing program shut down for about six weeks after he experienced soreness.

Luebke got the point of being able to play catch off the mound in May, but felt some discomfort in his left elbow after a throwing session and was shut down again.

Lubeke will take a couple days off and if he's not feeling any discomfort, will likely throw another bullpen on Thursday or Friday. As he gets closer to participating in full baseball activities, he could go with the Arizona summer league team to participate in their drills and complete his bullpens there.

If he continues to progress along this schedule, Luebke could participate in the instructional league in Arizona beginning in September.

"You hear the 12-to-18 month number," Black said. "Not all of them follow the same path. ... Cory is making progress now, so lets keep our fingers crossed that it continues."

Luebke "encouraging" in bullpen session

PHOENIX — Padres brass and the pitcher were all “encouraged” Tuesday after left-hander Cory Luebke threw 70 pitches from the bullpen mound at Chase Field.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” said Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley after Luebke threw a mix of fastballs and changeups. “I wasn’t expecting him to look that good.

“It was an excellent session. His arm action was very good. That was very encouraging.”

“I liked the way Cory threw,” said Padres manager Bud Black. “He threw really well. The ball came out free and easy. There was velocity to his fastball. That was a good sign, although there are a lot of hurdles to clear.”

Luebke has been rehabbing since having “Tommy John” elbow reconstruction surgery on May 23, 2012. Twice earlier this summer he was shut down when he experienced pain in the elbow near this stage of the 12-to-18-month rehab process.

“This is a much better feeling than the last two times,” said Luebke. “I haven’t felt anything in my elbow at all.”

Padres lefty Cory Luebke has had a bumpy road since undergoing Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in May last year. He had to stop his throwing program back in May, and now the Padres have shut him down after four bullpen sessions, reports Corey Brock. Luebke felt soreness in his elbow, which is never a good sign.

Luebke’s 2012 season halted after five starts in which he posted a 2.61 ERA in 31 innings. He will be 29 years old when the regular season starts next year.

Padres' pitcher Cory Luebke activated from 60-day DL, but not yet throwing

The San Diego Padres activated left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke from the 60-day DL, and the 28-year-old "feels good" despite not having thrown a pitch since September, reports Corey Brock of MLB.com. Luebke, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2012, was shut down on Sept. 15 due to continued soreness in his elbow. The Padres also activated right-hander Joe Wieland from the 60-day DL and designated left-handers Tommy Layne and Colt Hynes for assignment.

Luebke went under the knife in 2012 after making just five major league starts and missed the entire 2013 season while he recovered. His rehab has included some ups and downs, and he was forced to put things on hold in September when the pain returned to his pitching arm. Brock's report suggests that that pain is now gone, although Luebke is yet to throw off a mound since that time. He has appeared in 55 major league games in his career (25 of which were starts), during which time he has posted a 3.25 ERA in 188⅓ innings while striking out 195 batters.

Wieland, Luebke appear to be in mix for starting spots
Hurlers showing signs of emerging from Tommy John rehabs
By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com | 11/12/2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Padres are hopeful that left-hander Cory Luebke and right-hander Joe Wieland will be strong enough to vie for spots in the starting rotation when Spring Training opens this coming February, general manager Josh Byrnes said on Tuesday during the second day of the General Managers Meetings.

Both were top pitching prospects in the organization before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012.

"Luebke's been good," Byrnes said. "He's thrown off a mound a couple of times, and he's probably going to come out to San Diego in a week or two and throw to some hitters. Wieland threw in the Arizona Fall League the other night. They both appear to finally be where they need to be in their rehab.

"Now, including the six guys who finished the season in the rotation, we have two more to compete for starting spots. That area has been getting better and deeper for us."
As far as Luebke is concerned, he was one of the brighter lights to emerge on the Padres' scene in 2010, but his elbow broke down after making five starts early in 2012 and now hasn't pitched in a big league game in nearly two years.

The usual rule of thumb is that it takes a year to 18 months to fully recover from Tommy John surgery, and Luebke now is at the outer limits of that timeframe. That's why Byrnes is hoping Luebke will be ready to compete again before he turns 29 on March 4.

"You know, I've talked to a lot of GMs," Byrnes said. "His surgery was May of 2012. Based on the Tommy John timeline, yeah, he should be ready. Based on how he's recovered, we're not sure. Some guys have taken 20 months. I asked those GMs, 'When did you know?' Suddenly the guy goes out in Spring Training and he's back. Hopefully, that's the case with Cory.

"The past month is the best he's felt. 'Now I feel like myself again,' he told me. This is his 18th month. It's taken that kind of time."
